Chapter 63: The War to Come [Part Two]
[START]
They all sprinted toward Bella, their bodies blurring and then reappearing around her.
"She needs to run!" Edward grabbed her arm.
Alice turned. "She can't?! They will smell her."
"As if that would make a difference." But Rosalie's words flew past them like the wind.
"What are you guys talking about—" Vlad's words halted, eyes opening wide. And right when he turned his head, three figures appeared from the branches.
The first had long braided hair, with burnt brass for skin. While the rest, a male and female with dried snow for skin, walked behind him, pace swift, yet with steps too calm and elegant to be human.
And even though they walked with visible differences, one thing still held common ground; something Vlad wished to forget.
Red-blooded eyes.
Beside him, Edward pulled Bella toward his figure, hands stroking her hair behind and inserting them within the back of her jacket.
Then the others concealed her by standing in front and making sure she was hidden behind them.
"I believe this belongs to you." The one with braided hair was the first to speak, his hand lifting a baseball which they had thrown too far when they were still indulging in the fine pleasures of the game.
He then flung it, and the ball launched faster than a bullet, stopping on Carlisle, who caught it with little to no effort.
"My name is Laurent," he said, a smile revealing his white teeth. "And this is Victoria and James."
James's eyes drifted toward Vlad, who was standing at the front, turning to his hands, which were lightly shaking, his eyes cutting him like a knife.
"We come in peace, friend." Laurent's eyes narrowed on Vlad's hands, which were shivering.
Alice moved and interlocked one of her hands with his, completely halting the reaction.
Carlisle stepped forward. "I am Carlisle. This is my family."
Laurent smiled. "Hello."
But Carlisle nodded, followed by Jasper, whose eyes were trailing over all of them.
"I am afraid your hunting activities are—"
"Sheesh." Laurent raised a finger, silencing Carlisle, eyes shifting to Vlad, whose arm was being held tightly by Alice, who was doing nearly everything in her power to calm him. "You don't smell human, friend. Neither do you smell like us. Is that an ability?"
"Some kind of concealment?" James said, walking forward with a smile. "The scent is strong."
"Your activities are causing a mess for us," Carlisle once again became the center of attention. "Mess killings… We have a permanent residence here."
"Oh, really? Then our apologies." Laurent raised his hands in surrender. But James's eyes hadn't shifted since; they were still staring directly at Vlad's, who also focused back.
The red within them caused his hands to shiver more, even with Alice latched onto them.
"We truly did not realise the territory had been claimed," Laurent continued. "Truly, we were actually leaving, but we heard you playing and thought you would do us the decency of allowing more to join in."
"They have a human." Victoria, the girl beside them, said in a whisper. But they all heard every word.
"We do," Carlisle said as Edward pulled Bella even closer. "But she's with us."
"Oh, we will share just fine—" James nearly walked forward, but the widening of Vlad's blue eyes gave him shivers.
Two hundred years, and not once had he felt like that. It excited him.
"We would rather not." Carlisle's lips curled into something fake. "My family is not fond of sharing."
"We weren't asking." After mastering his strength, James walked forward. And everyone, from Carlisle, Jasper, and Emmett, opened their fingers like claws, teeth revealing with hisses.
"James!" Laurent shouted from behind him, but James's focus was on someone else; someone whose figure, unlike everyone else, remained unmoving. "Like we said, friends… we come in peace—"
Then everything shifted, everyone's eyes, friend or foe, turning to the woods. Watching as a wolf appeared while limping from the mist, wounded, bloody, and torn.
Even so, it growled, its eyes straight, stance taken. Gaze completely locked on Alice, who was latching onto Vlad's arm.
Vlad didn't even turn to it; his focus remained on those before him. Hands clenched, a tear falling from one of his orbs.
Unknowing that a war was soon to come, it was too late.
