Chapter 61: The Trail.

~~~ [START]
"You lied to me."
"Leah, wait." Jacob held her arm, but she shrugged it off.
Then she turned behind her, and his steps stumbled after seeing the tears fall from her eyes.
"You said he would listen."
"He did."
"Then why is he arranging a bus!" Her eyes didn't move, but Jacob looked away, gaze turning everywhere but toward her direction. "He's trying to keep me away—"
"He's trying to keep you safe," he shot.
"From what?!" The question stung like a splinter. "From what?!"
The pause in the air was almost audible.
So Leah walked to the stairs, climbed to her room, and then returned ten minutes later.
"Where are you going?" he questioned, his eyes trailing on the brown cloth tied around her waist, a cloth known as essential for shifters, one they often used to cover themselves when they shifted back.
"I'll do it myself." Leah walked to the door.
But Jacob sprinted and obstructed her before she could reach it. "Do what?!"
"Move!" she hissed.
"The bus is outside—"
"Jacob, get out of my way!"
"Leah!" His hands tightened around the handle. "The bus is waiting for you. Sam and his pack are waiting, Billy is waiting, fuck Leah! Everyone is waiting, all of us; just to send you off!"
Then, in a blur, Jacob was sent flying all the way to the kitchen.
And screams followed after his body slammed against the carbonate.
"Leah!" His head lifted from the corner. "Don't—"
He raised a hand to his chest, skin turning red. Unaware that an ancient heat had begun its ascent within his veins.
Leah stopped dead in her tracks, fingers shivering from the faint growls behind his grunts.
But it only lasted a second, because in the next, she was gone.
—---
{MINUTES LATER}
"Sam!" Jacob limped forward, his speed slow, with a hand raised to the ribs.
"Jacob?" Sam's eyes widened as he sprinted to him. But as soon as his fingers touched Jacob's skin, they jolted backward, as though grazed by open flames. "You're changing."
Jacob stumbled to the ground. "Changing? No, no… It's Leah, go to Leah."
"Leah—?"
His words struggled. "No, stop, wait, go to Leah!"
"Call Billy!" Jacob spun like a worm, a roar seeping past his lips. "Billy!... Where is Billy!"
"Where the heck is Quin!" Sam kneeled, but his hands turned back inches before touching Jacob's skin. "Tell him to bring ice. Jacob's shifting!"
"No… no, it's Leah, it's… she's going… the leech."
Then came the fading of consciousness, its effects strong and swift.
{ELSEWHERE}
"So…"
"So what? You think I forgot you stole my bike?"
Alice giggled, her arms moving around his neck.
"Whose bike?" she questioned, but just when he was about to answer, she kissed him. "Whose bike?"
Then she kissed him again, and again, until he succumbed entirely, his hands moving around her waist, lowering, then lifting her up and slumping her against the car door.
Alice pulled back. "Whose bike?"
Hesitation didn't linger.
"Yours."
And she drew closer after the words.
BEEP! BEEP!
Emmitt's jeep didn't even stop; it just sped past them.
"I'm saying this for the third time, I'm not good at baseball."
"It's baseball with superpowers." Alice kissed him on the cheek, climbed off his hands, then walked to the other side. "It's easier than it sounds."
Car keys launched, but he caught them before they hit his head.
Vlad sighed. "I thought we were taking my… your bike?"
And she giggled as she entered the passenger seat.
Then Vlad entered next.
The engine roared when he inserted the key, with his laughter nearly mimicking it.
"Damn, if only it were black."
Then he drove off, his leg fully stomping on the clutch in hopes of reaching full potential.
Too destructive for him to notice her attention; she was listening.
—----
{ELSEWHERE}
Jacob jolted awake as the ice and water within the bathtub poured out.
"Relax!" Billy pushed him deeper. "You are unstable; calm your mind."
But Jacob's head turned. "Where is Leah?!"
"Leah?"
"Billy!" an old man sprinted in. "They didn't find the girl."
Billy sighed. "She must have run to the woods again—"
"No!" Jacob jumped to his feet. "Leah's going after Vlad; she's trailing him!"
