Chapter 8 - The Silent Game

Where does this maid get that attitude from? Luna thought, irritated. It's like I haven't been strict enough with them—that's why she dared to ask me those questions.

Shaking her head, she hurried upstairs.

I need to get to my room fast.

She glanced around as she entered. Where's the gown I threw this morning when I was getting undressed? Her eyes landed on the chair—it was already neatly placed on top of it. Did the maid put it there? Or did I?

She didn't dwell on it. She grabbed the gown and rushed up to her bedroom.

Meanwhile, outside the mansion, Matteo was finally arriving.

"Almost home," he muttered as the car slowed at the gate.

The driver honked the horn, and the gateman quickly realized who it was. He opened the gate, allowing the Mercedes to drive in.

Matteo stepped out, rolling his shoulders with a sigh. "I'm so stressed out," he muttered as he climbed the front steps. Entering the house, he glanced around.

"Where's my wife?" he asked a passing guard. "Did she go out, or has she been in her room?"

"I haven't seen her today," the guard replied. "It looks like she's been in her room all day."

Matteo nodded and headed upstairs.

Luna, hearing his footsteps on the staircase, panicked.

He's coming!

She grabbed the gown she'd worn earlier and shoved it away. Quickly, she changed into her nightgown, threw on her pajamas, and jumped into bed, pretending to be asleep.

The bedroom door opened.

Matteo stepped inside, his eyes immediately falling on her. She looked peaceful—like she'd been sleeping for a while.

He sighed, pulling off his shoes as he walked further into the room. He moved closer, staring down at her for a moment before leaning in and kissing her forehead gently.

Luna fought the urge to flinch.

Matteo straightened up, then bent down again to remove the shoes she was still wearing.

Why am I shaking? Luna thought. It's just my husband. He can't do anything to me… right?

But deep inside, fear gnawed at her.

What if he finds out? Would he kill me? No… he wouldn't. But if he did, all my plans would mean nothing.

She tried to push the thoughts away and focused on keeping her breathing steady.

Matteo, meanwhile, finished removing his suit, changed into his own pajamas, and got into bed beside her.

Then, he reached over and tapped her leg gently.

Luna said, "Oh, sorry. You know how business is—sometimes it just takes longer than expected. But don't worry, next time I'll be back on time. Did you miss me?"

Matteo sighed. "Yes, I did. I was waiting for you. You said you'd be back by noon, but you didn't come, and now it's almost evening."

"I told you, don't worry about that," Luna replied. "Next time, I'll try to come earlier. I know you were worried."

Matteo studied her for a moment. "So, why didn't you go shopping? I asked one of the guards, and he said he hadn't seen you step outside all day—not even into the compound."

"I did go out today," Luna said quickly. "I wanted to buy something, so I stepped out for a bit. I just didn't tell the guards. You know I don't like having bodyguards follow me everywhere. But I didn't find what I wanted to buy."

Matteo frowned. "What do you mean you went out without a bodyguard? You should have one with you. Why didn't they know you were leaving? That's their job—to take you wherever you need to go and protect you. If they're not doing their job, I'll deal with it."

Luna forced a small smile, though her heart was pounding. I didn't plan to tell them I left the house… but that maid might snitch on me. She tried to calm herself. It doesn't matter. This excuse is enough. Even if she tells, it won't be a problem. Matteo trusts me.

Matteo sighed again. "Just try to have someone escort you next time. You can buy anything you want, anytime you want. Before, whenever I gave you my card, you'd rush to the shops and buy almost everything. But now… you're acting different. Are you okay? Are you feeling sick? If something's wrong, just tell me."

Luna shook her head. "I told you—I just didn't find what I was looking for. Maybe I'll check again another time."

"Oh, I almost forgot," Matteo said, his tone shifting. "I wanted to tell you something. You know my friend, Lorenzo? He's going to come here and use my office—the one that's locked. He'll be here for a while because I might not be around when he arrives."

"Okay, I know him. He's going to come, so no problem," Luna said.

"By the way, I'm starving. I need something to eat."Matteo said

Luna raised an eyebrow. What does she mean by that? He ate at the restaurant—a huge piece of steak. And now he's saying he's hungry again?

Luna smiled. "I don't mind cooking. Don't worry, I'll make something for you. Maybe rice with stew and some sauce. Would that be okay?"

"Anything you make is fine with me. Your hands are like magic in the kitchen," Matteo said.

"Okay," Luna replied, standing up from the bed. She headed downstairs toward the kitchen, but her mind wasn't on cooking.

Lorenzo is coming here, and Matteo won't be around. That guy gives me the creeps, but this could be my chance. I've been trying to get into that locked office for a while now, but I've never had the opportunity. If Lorenzo is going to be inside, then maybe I can find a way in too.

Reaching the kitchen, she took out a pot and some rice. She washed the rice, filled the pot with water, and set it on the stove to boil. As she waited, her mind kept drifting back to the office.

There must be something important in that room. Matteo always locks himself in there. If I can get inside, I might find what I need.

When the rice was ready, she took it off the stove and started preparing the stew. She warmed up some fried meat, added it to the pot, and let it simmer before serving the food on a plate. Placing a spoon beside it, she picked up the dish and headed upstairs to Matteo.

Her thoughts kept racing. I need to document everything. If I see anything important, I'll take pictures or record videos. I have to make sure I know every single thing he's involved in. I want proof—solid proof. I already know he's ordered people to be killed, but I need to see it for myself. I need documents, records… something undeniable.

Lost in thought, Luna suddenly realized she had stopped walking. She was standing still in the middle of the staircase. Shaking herself out of it, she continued up to their room.

She stepped inside and handed Matteo his food.

"Wow, this looks amazing. I love the aroma," Matteo said.

"Thank you. Take a bite and tell me how it tastes," Luna replied, flashing him a smile.

Matteo took a bite and nodded. "It's delicious… but not as sweet as you."

Luna chuckled. "Why do you always flatter me? Do you do this on purpose?"

Matteo smirked. "It doesn't matter if I do it on purpose or not. You just look as good as the food I'm eating."

"No, no, no. That one was creepy," Luna said, laughing. "Even if you were trying to flatter me, that was really creepy."

Matteo laughed along with her.

"Where are you going tomorrow? You said you won't be around, and you mentioned Lorenzo will be using your office. But where exactly are you going?" Luna asked.

"There's something I need to purchase. It's just for business—maybe a poker table and some other stuff. I'm planning on setting up another casino," Matteo explained.

"Oh, that's really good. I've been to the casino you already own, and I was shocked by how huge it was," Luna said.

Matteo nodded. "It's not just casinos. I have other businesses too. That's why I'm always busy."

"No need to explain. I understand," Luna replied.
