"Crystals like this have appeared before," Obi-Wan said, looking at Millisyn's crystal. "But no youngling ever chose them, and they never guided a youngling either."
"A crystal with a crack in it would usually be very unstable. But this crack is inside the crystal, and the substance mixed into that fracture is extremely unusual as well. It contains some kind of unknown energy."
Amir immediately asked, "Can it be made into a lightsaber?"
"You can try making one and see." Obi-Wan handed the crystal back to Millisyn.
The little girl didn't look disappointed at all. Instead, she turned toward Amir with eager excitement.
"Come on, come on, hurry up and help me make a lightsaber," Millisyn urged.
Seeing the light in her eyes, Amir nodded.
In theory, this crystal should be usable in a lightsaber. There were no visible cracks on the outside—only some minor flaws within—so it probably wouldn't affect too much.
Taking Millisyn and 32 over to the workbench, Amir picked up a stylus and looked at the two of them.
"Use your imagination. Draw the kind of lightsaber you want, and I'll refine it a bit and forge it for you. Here are all kinds of alloys—their properties are all in the datapads you studied. Pick one you like. Though, preferably don't use beskar. It attracts trouble."
"Mm-hm!!" Millisyn grabbed a stylus, sat down on a chair, and began scratching away with great effort.
Amir swallowed.
Millisyn had never really used something like a pen before. She'd never written, much less drawn.
32 probably wasn't much better, right?
Amir turned to look at the cyborg beside him.
Smooth lines were already appearing on the blank sheet, quickly sketching the outline of a lightsaber.
"Right. Forgot he can cheat."
A mechanical arm moved according to 32's brain directly—there was no such thing as "practice" or "skill" involved. As long as he could imagine the motion, the arm could execute it perfectly.
For a moment, Amir felt like making another one for himself.
By the time night fell, Millisyn had finally managed to draw a rough outline, full of wobbly, uneven lines. By then, Amir had already cast 32's outer housing and was preparing the internal components for him.
"I'm done, Amir!" Millisyn called out. She had redrawn it many times, so this one was clearly the version she was happiest with.
After handing the components to 32 and reminding him once more how to assemble them, Amir walked over to Millisyn.
Looking at the shape on the page, he laughed.
"D-don't laugh! It's pretty good, right?"
"Of course it is," Amir said, because the lightsaber on the page looked very much like his own.
"So, no little flowers or feathers or anything?" Amir joked.
"Well… can you draw those on for me?"
"Sure. Sure."
Taking Millisyn's drawing, Amir redrew it together with her, and a smaller lightsaber—sized perfectly for her hand—gradually appeared on the page.
"Yes, yes, that's it! Exactly like I imagined!"
With the design finished, Amir found the actual construction easy enough.
At that moment, Obi-Wan walked over. "For hundreds of years, the first lightsabers of younglings were designed and built by Professor Huyang. He was a very admirable droid. He was probably lost as well."
Amir listened as Obi-Wan spoke of the past.
"There was a time when I led a group to Ilum, and I also helped younglings build lightsabers aboard the Crucible. The ship carried a wide range of materials to choose from, and under his guidance, every youngling received the lightsaber best suited to them."
Amir finished carving the mold and said, "Maybe Professor Huyang wasn't destroyed at all. Maybe he's somewhere out there still waiting. Perhaps the new Jedi Order could ask for his help one day."
"Ha… perhaps." Obi-Wan smiled, then stepped over to explain the lightsaber assembly process to Millisyn.
Once apprentices had built a lightsaber with their own hands, they would firmly remember how it worked. From then on, they could create new lightsabers by themselves.
Nearby, 32 successfully finished assembling his own. As expected, it activated without any problem, revealing a pair of blue blades.
The double-bladed saber moved very fluidly in his hands, releasing a pleasant hum.
Millisyn's eyes widened with envy, but she only looked for a moment before turning her full attention back to the components in front of her.
She was just waiting for Amir to finish her outer casing.
Amir put much more care into Millisyn's lightsaber casing. To suit her small hands, he made repeated adjustments to the grip diameter. Like his own, the hilt had no unnecessary external components; most of the mechanisms were housed inside. At Millisyn's request, he also engraved elegant patterns along the handle and inlaid them with fine gold lines, which also helped improve grip.
After the final adjustments and polishing, Millisyn excitedly took it from him.
"You have to be careful when assembling it," Amir warned. "If you do it wrong, it can explode. Everything around you—except your kyber crystal—could be destroyed."
That wasn't a scare tactic. The amount of energy inside a lightsaber really was terrifying.
Millisyn nodded seriously and used the Force to lift all the surrounding components—including the casing—into the air, arranging them one by one according to what Obi-Wan had just taught her.
Before long, she had them all lined up neatly, then looked up at Amir.
Amir nodded in approval.
The light in Millisyn's eyes grew even brighter. Under her control, the internal components of the lightsaber gradually joined together, wrapped by the casing, piece after piece locking into place, until a crisp closing click sounded.
Holding the lightsaber in her hands, Millisyn gently stroked it.
"Thank you, Amir. It's so beautiful. I love it so much!"
Amir had wanted to explain all the highly innovative adjustments he'd made to keep the blade stable despite the crystal's possible instability.
After all, this lightsaber was more than just pretty.
But when he saw the look in Millisyn's eyes, he only said:
"Try it."
Millisyn lifted her lightsaber in front of her face and gently pressed the activator.
A blue blade sprang to life.
At the emitter, unstable flame-like arcs burst outward, but the fluctuations did not affect its use at all.
The most surprising part was that within the blue energy blade, a thin red line flowed through it all the way to the tip.
Even Amir found it fascinating. He hadn't expected such a change.
Millisyn, however, didn't care about any of that. Her smile never stopped for a second—she was too busy happily swinging the lightsaber around.
"I knew my crystal wasn't a problem! Amir, I have a lightsaber now too!"
Just as Amir had expected, the lightsaber functioned very steadily. It had some strange peculiarities, yes—but if it worked, then it was a good lightsaber.
What mattered most was that Millisyn loved it.
After finishing those two major projects, Amir was a little tired. He and Obi-Wan each took a drink and walked over to the ship's doorway.
Ignoring the wildly deranged "swordsmanship" demonstration Millisyn was currently putting on, Amir said, "This is a very good start."
"It truly is," Obi-Wan replied. "We're no longer standing still. Everything is finally beginning to change."
