Once they passed through the opening, there was no surprise—it really was a crystal cave.
At the entrance, an artificial tunnel had been excavated, leading straight inward.
Though it was a cave, it didn't feel dark at all. The blue ice all around emitted a soft white glow.
Amir closed his eyes and sensed the surroundings. In the darkness of his inner vision, a single point of light appeared, as though it were calling to him.
"Could it be that I'm getting a kyber crystal too?" Amir said, a little surprised.
The feeling was very similar to the crystal Guli'gena had once given him.
He already had a lightsaber, so he hadn't planned on getting another one during this trip.
But if a crystal was calling to him, then he obviously had to go take it. What if the crystal got sad if he didn't?
Millisyn was also standing there with her brows furrowed, trying to sense something, but apparently she hadn't discovered anything obvious.
"Then I'm going, Amir! I can feel it—it's up ahead!" Millisyn said, jogging forward a few steps before turning back to him.
"Me too…" 32 followed along in the same direction as Millisyn.
They had barely gone a short distance before the path split. Millisyn chose one direction, and 32 chose another.
There was no such thing as a right or wrong path when searching for a crystal. All you had to do was follow the Force's guidance.
Simply put: trust your instincts.
Amir, however, could vaguely sense where his crystal was, so he didn't need to search blindly. He headed directly in one direction.
After passing through the tunnel, the cave suddenly opened up. Inside the vast ice cavern were enormous ice platforms, hanging icicle-like crystal formations, tunnel mouths interlocked like fangs, and black pools of water as dark as an abyss.
With the Force assisting him, Amir moved as if he were walking on level ground, steadily making his way deeper into the cave.
Step by step, 32 walked forward.
All around him was ice. He found the environment fascinating.
He could not feel cold.
But what was the world around him, really?
With the help of his cybernetic eye, he could see many things—time, temperature, the remaining energy that sustained his body, the condition of each part of his mechanical form.
He liked this state very much.
A body he could control. No pain. No decay.
Sometimes, when he watched Amir and the others eating, he felt a little envious, but to him, that wasn't important.
What mattered was freedom and peace.
Freedom of the body. Peace of perception.
And now, he had also learned how to use the Force to sense things. That filled him with astonishment and excitement.
Compared to touch, the Force reached directly to the essence of things, giving him an experience unlike anything he had known before. His one great deficiency had been mended.
What remained now was only gratitude, and the desire to cherish it.
He raised his head and thought he saw a faint glimmer flickering inside the ice.
When he stared directly at it, the light vanished. When he shifted his gaze away, it appeared again.
32 felt a sense of intimacy.
So he walked toward that light.
Millisyn, on the other hand, was far more lost.
Ever since entering the cave, she had been glancing around constantly. Obi-Wan and Amir had both said her kyber crystal would guide her to it, but she had been inside for quite a while already and still hadn't found anything.
That made her anxious. What if no kyber crystal had chosen her?
No way, right? No way, no way—ahhh!
Thinking that, she sped up. As long as she went far enough, she would definitely find her crystal!
She went faster and faster, jumping over one high platform after another, passing through narrow tunnels one by one, until sweat had begun to form on her smooth forehead. At last, she reached a wide cavern hall, and a sudden breeze made her shiver with cold.
But the sight before her instantly captivated her.
"So beautiful…"
Blue crystal formations hung overhead, joining the ground like frozen stalactites. Countless bluish-white glows flickered between the ice, like spirits of snow and frost dancing about. The entire hall shimmered as though it were part of a marvelous dream.
Unable to resist, Millisyn stepped forward.
She had only taken two steps when a crack sounded beneath her feet.
A sense of danger flooded her mind at once. She jumped backward as fast as she could, but the ice beneath her had already shattered. With no support left, both her feet slipped into empty air.
The world spun, and Millisyn slammed heavily onto the ground.
The sudden pain made her curl up tightly, hugging herself into a ball.
"Good thing I'm wearing thick clothes," Millisyn muttered. After a while, she slowly stood up again.
What she saw now was the complete opposite of what she had seen from above. The light around her had dimmed, and the white glow she had seen before had turned vivid and unsettling, like rust-red mixed into blue sap leaking from a wounded tree.
Millisyn was frightened. She felt an unpleasant aura. The space around her seemed sealed off, like the little room from before—dark, cold.
"Amir!" Millisyn stepped back twice until her back hit the wall, then shouted helplessly.
All she heard in return was the echo around her.
She swallowed hard and timidly reached out, wanting to touch the glow in front of her, but her hand found nothing at all.
Taking a deep breath, Millisyn began walking forward. Amid the red, star-like glow, she saw one point shining brighter than all the others.
Though confused, she still walked toward it.
Amir found his kyber crystal very quickly, but it wasn't quite what he had imagined.
He had thought it would be a small crystal suspended over an ice platform, waiting for him to pick it up.
But the little crystal he found was not exactly little.
It was embedded in the wall, no different from the other crystals he had seen on the way—except that it was as large as a human head.
There was ample space around it, so Amir didn't have to struggle much to pry it loose.
"How am I supposed to make a lightsaber out of this thing?" Amir said helplessly.
I'll just take it back first.
Just as that thought crossed his mind, he felt something strange.
Perhaps because the cave contained so many crystals, the Force here was much stronger than it was outside, making his perceptions sharper than before.
Now he detected a wave of dark side power spreading from somewhere not far away.
"Millisyn?" Amir thought at first, but quickly rejected it. This Force felt different from Millisyn's.
Or rather, different from any dark side presence he had encountered before.
It wasn't violent rage, nor endless craving.
It felt more like resentment and stubbornness.
Seen from that angle, it barely even felt like the dark side.
Carrying the huge kyber crystal in his arms, Amir hurried toward the source he had sensed.
Millisyn walked up to that light and was overjoyed to discover that it really was a kyber crystal. So it had been guiding her after all!
Even though she didn't like the way it had done it, she was willing to forgive it for having good taste.
She took the crystal down. The illusory glow it had been emitting faded away, leaving only an ordinary-looking crystal lying in her palm.
Millisyn noticed that within the blue crystal was a deep crack, and from that crack spread a red halo.
That confused her, but she still liked the crystal very much. When she held it in her hand, she felt as though she could sense emotion coming from within it.
It felt less like a crystal than like a friend.
"Millisyn?" a familiar voice came from above.
Millisyn looked up. The scene above her became clear again.
She broke into a delighted smile.
"I found it, Amir! I can make a lightsaber now!"
