"So pretty!" Millisyn pressed herself against the window, staring at the blue-and-white world ahead.
"Sit properly." Amir reached out and pulled her back into her seat.
The Traveler entered the atmosphere smoothly and flew toward the coordinates Obi-Wan had given them.
"This doesn't look great." They reached the target area soon enough, but what Amir saw was not what Obi-Wan had described.
The mountain peaks were buried under layers of snow, the steep ice walls reflected pale sunlight, and there was no obvious path anywhere on the ground.
"The coordinates are right here…" Amir had no choice but to land according to the location Obi-Wan remembered.
After putting on the clothes they had bought for Hoth last time, the three of them—including BD-4—got off the ship.
Looking at the smooth ice-covered ground and the towering frozen mountains ahead, Amir felt a headache coming on.
Millisyn, however, had no such worries. She and BD-4 had already started "ice skating," and in her carelessness she slipped and fell flat on the ice.
Amir climbed to a higher spot and studied the surrounding terrain. At last, he noticed a very unusual formation—there, the ice mountains stood one after another in orderly ranks, as if they had been altered by someone's hand.
After running around for a while, Millisyn's body had warmed up too.
"Which way are we going?" Millisyn asked, still thinking about her lightsaber.
"That way, probably." Amir pointed toward the area he had noticed. It was not far from the Traveler, but there might not be anywhere suitable to land up ahead.
So Amir and 32 returned to the Traveler and brought out two speeder bikes. A ship ought to carry some transport options for special situations.
Like now.
Millisyn sat in front of Amir, hugging BD-4, while 32 rather stiffly mounted the other one by himself.
Two white streaks raced across the blue-white ice.
Unlike Hoth, Ilum had more ice than snow, and the climate was gentler.
But there was very little life here, only some hardy low-growing plants spreading across the frozen ground.
Before long, they ran into an obstacle.
Parking the speeders to one side, Amir carefully felt out the terrain around them through the Force.
"We'll climb over here." As one of the Jedi's most important kyber crystal gathering sites, many structures had been built here. Not only would younglings come here to find the crystal for their first lightsaber, many apprentices also trained in the chambers here, honing their will and their Force abilities.
To protect the environment, the Jedi had set up small mechanisms around the important crystal caves that could only be opened through the Force. Effective, but not difficult—Padawans and the Masters leading them could easily solve them.
Hidden doors behind pillars that could rise and fall. Thick ice layers that could be melted by redirected light.
"It's so high!" Millisyn looked at the obstacle in front of her and immediately pulled a long face.
"You can do it. Did you forget all your training lately?" Amir said. Millisyn had already learned how to use the Force to lessen her own weight.
"But it's still so high!"
32 had learned the same technique. He bent his knees slightly and, using the powerful drive of his mechanical legs, leapt easily onto the platform nearly ten meters high. It felt a little like cheating, but his grasp of the Force was definitely part of it.
Millisyn swallowed, suddenly eager to try.
Amir, carrying BD-4, jumped up as well, then reached out a hand toward her. "Come on. If you can't make it, I'll help."
"Mm!" Millisyn looked up at the height above her, stomped her feet a few times on the ground, bent her knees, and jumped lightly. Her small body floated upward like a feather tossed into the air, drifting toward Amir.
As she neared the edge, Amir reached out in time and pulled her over.
"I did it, hmph!" Millisyn looked at Amir proudly.
"Very good. In the future, trust yourself. Trust the Force."
Amir lifted his head and looked into the distance. There was a chain of ice mountains there, and on the front wall of one, a large section differed in color.
Compared to the deeper blue of the surrounding ice, that section was much closer to white. Most likely, it was hollow inside.
"Found it," Amir said with a smile.
When they reached it, they discovered that the possible entrance was much larger than expected. Looking up, they couldn't even see the top.
"That part is melted!" Millisyn pointed toward the middle of the ice wall.
Amir looked over. Sure enough, there was a melted opening there, large enough for a person to walk through normally.
A bright beam of light shone out from inside.
Raising a hand to shield his eyes from the glare, Amir stepped inside.
Once inside, he looked around.
This was undoubtedly a space carved out by deliberate design. The ground was flat, the smooth walls were covered in murals, as if they were telling a long history.
At the center of the chamber was a hollow-framed metallic sphere. It was this sphere that was reflecting light to melt the ice wall at the entrance.
The sphere was not glowing on its own.
The chamber above was not fully sealed. There was an opening in the ceiling, and within that opening was another identical sphere.
Sunlight streamed through the hole above, gathered by that upper sphere into a concentrated beam, then shot down into the sphere at the center of the room. After being reflected again by that central sphere, the light finally struck the ice wall at the entrance.
"These spheres are strange." Amir walked closer to inspect them. Even if sunlight entered through a small opening, no amount of normal focusing should be enough to melt such solid ice. Whatever material these spheres were made of had to possess some special property.
As sunlight passed through them, some unique reaction must be occurring inside, amplifying the light several times over.
"What is this place?" Millisyn asked as she walked in too.
"A meditation chamber, probably." Amir looked around. There was no other training equipment. Centered on the room's midpoint, calming patterns spread outward across the floor, perfectly suited for sitting and meditating.
"Oh. I hate meditation." Millisyn instantly lost interest in the room.
"We keep going. This is just the entrance." Amir had spotted another pale-colored ice wall ahead, and beyond it should also be a hollow space.
Using the Force, he rotated the sphere in the center of the room, redirecting the beam so that it struck the new ice wall.
Before long, a new opening appeared there.
This time, the space beyond was far larger. It looked more like a mining cave.
"Good luck," Amir said, turning to the two behind him. "Once we go inside, we split up. Kyber crystals don't just get chosen by you—they choose you too. A lightsaber made with the crystal that truly suits you will always feel easier to use. Listen for their guidance through the Force."
"Mm-hmm!" Millisyn nodded vigorously, full of enthusiasm.
32 looked excited too.
"I'll go in with you, but if you run into danger you can't handle, just shout for me." Amir led the two of them into the opening.
