The Spirit's Decision
***Arin's POV***
My mother's subdued form swung its claws out at me.
"Stop, Mom!" I screamed while sidestepping.
However, she was no longer my mother. She spoke in the terrible voice of the Shadow King, and her eyes were all black. She snarled and swiped at my face, saying, "You can't run from family, little wolf."
My heart was breaking as I staggered backward. It wasn't fair. I had always believed that my mother was still alive, albeit perhaps damaged or lost. I now learned that she was both dead and under the control of the creature that had ruined so many lives.
"Fight back!" From somewhere behind me, Kael yelled.
However, I was unable to. I couldn't bring myself to harm her body, even though I knew this wasn't my mother and that the Shadow King was in control of her. With tears running down my cheeks, I muttered, "I can't."
My arm ached as the domineering mother grabbed my wrist. She had an icy grip.
