Chapter 1 — The Last Stand and a New Life
——————
The world was ablaze.
Before a man with ash-gray hair, a colossal black dragon struggled to draw breath.
"Kyle."
"Don't speak. I'll save you, no matter what!"
Gritting his teeth, Kyle unleashed a healing spell.
A torrent of immense mana surged forth.
Yet the gaping wound in the dragon's belly refused to close.
"Damn it! Damn it! I won't lose you too!"
"No... I'm done for, Kyle. Take my Dragon Heart and carry on."
"Shut up and stop spouting that insane nonsense!"
Kyle snapped harshly.
"Arion, Luna, Dweno, they're gone, lost to this madness! Don't you dare die like them! You're a dragon! Act like the proud race you are, you blasted lizard!"
"Kyle... do you remember when we first met?"
Kyle swallowed hard.
With the same smile as back then, Lisinas spoke.
"We swore to save the world."
"So we—"
"I'm sorry... for leaving you to bear this alone."
The dragon's eyelids slid shut.
"..."
Staring at the lifeless black dragon, Kyle gazed up at the ashen sky.
Black rain fell.
A rain of death, gnawing at life itself.
Proof that the world was hurtling toward ruin.
"Haha... damn it all."
Unwilling to dodge the rain, Kyle spat out a curse.
Ripping into his comrade's chest, he pulled out the Dragon Heart and turned away.
In the distance, a burning tower loomed.
"Erebos."
He hissed his enemy's name like a venomous vow.
"I'll kill you. Even if I'm the last one standing."
The final great hero marched toward the battlefield.
And... the world was saved by a single man.
---
"Leo, Mommy's going to read you a storybook."
The lady of the Flove household, Reina Flove, approached her month-old son with a warm smile.
Watching her, Deid Flove burst into laughter.
"Reina, haven't you read that storybook over a hundred times already? Counting the pregnancy, it's probably closer to a thousand."
"But Deid, this is my favorite tale of the great heroes!"
Reina gazed lovingly at her sleeping son in the cradle.
"And Leo loves it too. He gets so happy every time I read it."
"Really?"
"Want to see?"
Reina stepped to the cradle and opened the book.
"Leo, Mommy's going to read The Heroes of Beginnings."
Leo's eyes snapped open.
"Once upon a time, long, long ago, five thousand years ago, to be exact..."
"Abuh! Abababa! Adudu!"
"See!"
"Haha, you're right!"
Deid Flove's face lit up with amazement as his son babbled and flailed.
Smiling brightly, Reina continued reading.
The elven archmage, Luna.
The dwarven master smith, Dweno.
The beastman warrior, Arion.
And the wise dragon, Lisinas.
"And so, the great heroes defeated the evil Erebos, bringing peace to the world. The end!"
"Abuh! Agugugu!"
Leo wildly waved his tiny arms and legs.
The couple beamed with pride at their son.
But in his mind, Leo screamed.
'Please, for the love of all that's holy, stop reading that cursed book!'
The Flove couple would have been stunned to know their newborn held such clear thoughts.
But the real shock was his true identity.
Long ago, five thousand years ago, to be exact.
He was one of the great heroes who saved the world.
Kyle.
The man who vanquished the primordial evil, Erebos, and saved the world.
Yet a man forgotten by the annals of history.
