Chapter 35 - PAPER HEART

The sun hung lazily above the hills, casting a soft golden glow across the field.

A checkered blanket was spread under a lone tree, and next to it stood a chalkboard sign that read: "5 Years of Friendship & Forever More."

Amelia adjusted the flower crown on Lena's head while Nora fiddled with the camera settings.

Kai, ever the perfectionist, paced in front of the tripod like a fashion director on set.

"We are not leaving here until I get at least one picture where Eli isn't blinking," Kai declared, hands on his hips.

Eli groaned.

"That was one time, and the sun was in my eyes."

"And your mouth was open like you were mid-yawn," Lena added, laughing.

Harrison stood a little apart, watching Amelia as she tilted her head to the side, laughing at something Nora whispered.

She looked like something out of a memory, sunlight in her hair, ease in her smile, but guarded still, like she was holding pieces of herself back.

"Okay! Everyone in!" Amelie called.

They gathered under the tree.

First, a silly photo, tongues out, peace signs in the air.

Then a serious one. Then a hug pile.

Then just the girls.

Then just the guys.

Then, almost instinctively, they called for a "best duo shot."

Amelia and Harrison stepped forward first.

Eli hesitated. Nora shot him a look, but he didn't say a word.

As the shutter clicked, Harrison gently placed his hand on Amelia's back, and though her smile didn't falter, Eli saw the flicker in her eyes.

"Switch!" Kai called.

Now it was Eli and Amelia.

The tension lingered like a shadow.

They didn't speak.

But as the flash went off, Eli whispered, "I miss how we used to be."

Amelia blinked.

The moment passed. The camera clicked.

"Alright, final shot!" Nora yelled. "Group hug. No awkward energy. I mean it!"

They all groaned, but leaned in.

One giant embrace. One photo that would hang on their walls forever.

Even if things were never the same again.

 Inked in Memory

That evening, after the laughter from the photo shoot faded into the hum of cicadas, Lena placed a small basket in the center of the living room.

"Time for our tradition," she smiled. "Letter exchange."

The room fell quiet.

The playful mood shifted into something tender.

Each of them had written a letter, something they'd started doing at the first friendship anniversary.

Back then, it was filled with silly doodles and inside jokes.

This year, the letters held deeper weight.

Truths they hadn't spoken aloud.

Nora's Letter to Amelia:

Dear Amelia,

From the moment you walked into our lives, you brought warmth, not just with your laugh, but with the way you care so fiercely.

I know things have been hard lately. I see it in your silence, in the way your eyes search the floor before they meet ours.

Whatever you decide, whoever you choose or let go… you'll still have me. You'll always have us.

With love, always,

Nora.

Amelia's reaction to Nora's letter.

The room went quiet.

Amelia looked up, and her eyes locked with Nora's across the circle.

She didn't hesitate.

She stood up, walked directly to her, and hugged her tightly, in full view of everyone.

The kind of hug that said thank you for knowing my heart when I couldn't speak it myself.

"Thank you, Nora," Amelia whispered, her voice thick. "I needed that more than I realized."

Nora blinked quickly, brushing her own eyes.

"I meant every word, Mel. You've always carried so much for all of us.

You deserve someone to carry you sometimes."

There was a beat of silence before Kai grinned and broke it with a dramatic sniff.

"Am I crying or is it dusty in here?"

Lena laughed. "You're crying."

Even Eli, quietly watching from the couch, softened visibly, eyes on Amelia.

Harrison shifted slightly beside him, gaze lowered, thoughtful, almost regretful.

Amelia let out a soft laugh through her sniffles.

"Okay, whose idea was this again? Letters? Emotional ambush? Rude."

"Mine," Kai raised his hand proudly. "You're welcome."

The room burst into light laughter, the kind that melted tension like sun on frost.

But through it all, Amelia held Nora's hand, as if grounding herself, grateful, steady, and quietly healing.

Eli's Letter

This letter was supposed to be light, a joke about how you snort when you laugh, or how you steal fries from everyone's plate.

But every time I try to write those things, it comes out wrong.

So here's the truth: I love you. I have for years. Maybe I hid it too well.

Maybe I was too late. But every time I look at you, it hurts, not because you don't love me back, but because I think you do… and you're still choosing to walk away.

For the sake of the group. For peace.

I'm proud of you for that. And it breaks me, too.

Eli.

Kai's Reaction to Eli's Letter

This…" Kai said, voice lower now, "…this is what you should've done a long time ago."

Eli blinked, startled.

"I mean it," Kai continued. "All this time, we were dancing around what everyone felt, trying not to break anything.

But things were breaking anyway. Quietly. This letter? It's the glue. The thing we needed from you."

There was no anger in his tone, just honesty.

"And for what it's worth, man…" Kai added, cracking a small smile, "…I'm proud of you."

Eli looked at him, jaw tight, then exhaled like he'd been holding something in for years. "Thanks, Kai."

"Don't get mushy with me," Kai said, smirking. "One emotional breakthrough per letter is enough."

Then he tossed the folded note back into Eli's lap, stood dramatically, and announced, "Okay.

Someone get the camera.

If we're gonna be emotionally vulnerable and good-looking, we might as well document it."

The group burst into laughter, the kind that ripples, softens tension, and reminds everyone why they're still here.

Still together.

Still them.

Harrison's Letter to Amelia

We were young when I left.

I thought I had time, that someday, we'd find our way back.

"Now that I have it, all I want is to hold onto it.

To you.

"But I saw it in your eyes today.

"You're carrying guilt like it's your second skin.

If letting me go helps you breathe easier, I'll step back.

"Not because I want to, but because I love you more than enough to want your peace over my presence."

But if there's a part of you still reaching, wondering, you'll always find me right where we left off.

Still yours,

Harrison.

 Amelia's Reaction to Harrison's Letter

The group had fallen quiet. Even Kai wasn't joking anymore.

Amelia's eyes were darting from line to line. her lips parted slightly, then pressed together as if to hold something in.

She looked up, directly at Harrison.

There was so much in her gaze: history, hurt, the gentle ache of what-could-have-beens.

"Harrison…" she began, her voice barely above a whisper.

He looked at her, vulnerable, tense, ready for rejection or relief.

Amelia took a breath, steadying herself.

"I know my decision was hard to understand," she said, speaking now to the group, but her eyes stayed locked on his.

"But I made it for all of us."

Amelia glanced briefly at Eli, then back to Harrison.

"I care about both of you. Deeply. And it would break me to see myself choosing one and losing the other, or worse, watching either of you break because of me."

Her voice wavered, but she pushed through.

"I did it so nobody would get hurt. Even if it meant I would."

Harrison swallowed hard.

His usual composure faltered, eyes briefly closing as if trying to contain something unspoken.

Amelia gave him a soft, heart-wrenching smile.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "But I hope, maybe… someday, we'll all look back and be thankful we chose peace."

She folded the letter gently, held it close to her chest for a second, and then, in a move so natural it surprised even herself, leaned forward and hugged Harrison.

It wasn't romantic.

It wasn't staged.

It was real.

He hugged her back, tight and still. A hug that said I understand, even if it hurt.

When they pulled apart, Amelia wiped a tear quickly before Kai could turn it into a joke.

But even he stayed silent, sensing the sacredness of the moment.

And in that silence, something shifted.

Not everything was healed.

But something was held.

Kai's Letter.

Amelia,

"I know I don't say the deep stuff often, I'm more of a 'tease and hug it out' kind of guy, but this is different.

You've been the glue that holds this group together.

Even when everything feels like it's crumbling, you still smile.

Still show up.

Still cooks us breakfast and listens to everyone's mess without ever asking for anything in return.

I see you.

And even though Eli and Harrison are both smitten and tangled up in their feelings, I just want you to know: you're loved.

Not for the confusion, not for the pretty smile, but for who you are.

If things ever get too heavy, I'll always be that annoying voice singing 90s songs off-key to cheer you up.

No matter what.

Forever your loudest hype man,

Kai.

Amelia's Reaction to Kai's Letter.

Amelia looked up, wiping away a laugh-tear. "Kai…"

He raised his brows smugly. "Say it. I'm amazing."

Amelia shook her head, smiling so wide it hurt.

"Thank you, Kai. For being my loudest hypeman, my cheerleader, and the one person who never lets any of us forget how awesome we are."

She stood and walked over to him, stretching out her arms.

"I appreciate you too, so, so much."

Kai opened his arms dramatically. "Come here, emotional goddess."

They hugged, a tight, goofy, swinging hug, as the rest of the group laughed and clapped.

Eli even did a mock wipe of his eye. "So touching," he said theatrically.

The moment was sweet, full of genuine warmth.

In a group that had been tiptoeing through emotional landmines, Kai's letter and Amelia's reaction brought them a few seconds of lightness.

And just like that, the balance started to return.

Lena's Letter to Amelia:

You and I might not have known each other the longest, but somehow it feels like you've been part of my story forever.

When I first joined this group, I felt like the extra piece.

But you, you made room for me without making a big deal out of it.

You saw me. And that's something I'll never forget.

I know these past few days haven't been easy.

You're carrying more than you should.

But I trust you, your heart, your intentions, your silence.

And when you said you were stepping away from both Eli and Harrison for the sake of peace… I wanted to scream.

Because I know you're sacrificing more than you're saying.

But I also know this: You are strong. Soft doesn't mean weak. You'll find your way.

And when you do, I'll be right beside you. Always.

Love,

Lena.

Amelia's Reaction to Lena's Letter

She looked up at Lena, eyes misty but shining.

"Thank you, Lena… for the amazing words," she said, her voice a little choked with emotion.

She took a few steps toward her and continued, "I'm so happy you joined this group, that you chose to stay, to grow with us, to be part of this big, chaotic, beautiful family."

The group was quiet, not with tension, but respect for the intimacy of the moment.

Then Amelia reached forward and pulled Lena into a hug.

"You fit right in. Like you've always been here."

Lena hugged her back with a soft smile. "That's because I wanted to be."

And as they stood together, the rest of the group smiled, a shared feeling moving between them, gratitude, unity, and the comforting knowledge that no matter how messy things got… their friendship meant something real.

Amelia's Letter to the Group:

To My People,

I don't even know how to begin this without getting teary.

When we first formed this little group, we were just a bunch of teenagers sharing inside jokes, snacks, and late-night dreams.

Now we're older, more complicated, but still together. And that, to me, is everything.

This trip didn't go as planned.

There were cracks, confessions, awkward moments, and quiet storms.

"But through it all, I still saw the same people I fell in love with, platonically, emotionally, deeply, when we were younger.

I love each of you in a way that can't be measured by who ends up with whom.

Thank you for your laughter, your honesty, your letters, and even your chaos.

Thank you for making me feel safe, even when everything felt uncertain.

No matter what the future holds, this friendship will always be the home I return to.

"To my incredible friends.

Thank you for being here. For showing up for each other. For being silly and serious and supportive all in one.

I may not say it all the time, but I notice everything, the quiet sacrifices, the jokes meant to lift heavy moods, the unspoken loyalty.

This group… you all mean more to me than I can put in words.

Thank you for making me feel like I belong.

For letting me be part of this loud, messy, loving family.

I love you guys, all of you."

Forever grateful,

Amelia.

The Group's Reaction to Amelia's Letter.

She finished and slowly folded the letter. Silence hung in the room like a soft, heavy curtain.

Then Kai let out a loud, overly dramatic sniff.

"Dang, Amelia. You trying to make a grown man cry?"

Everyone laughed, tension easing, hearts warming.

Lena reached for Amelia's hand.

"That was beautiful. And honest. You always carry so much for all of us.

Thank you for finally letting us carry something with you."

Nora smiled gently.

"You're the glue, Amelia.

Always have been. We needed to hear that.

I think we all forgot a little, with everything going on."

Eli, quiet but visibly moved, nodded.

"You've always seen everyone… even when we didn't see ourselves.

Thanks for reminding us what matters."

Harrison stood, walked over, and gave her a small nod.

"That letter... that's why we're still here.

Why do we always find our way back? Because you never let us fall apart, even when you were breaking inside."

Amelia's eyes shimmered. She gave a watery laugh. "Well... someone had to hold it together."

Kai smirked. "Next time, let someone else do the emotional heavy lifting.

I'll bring tissues, promise."

They all laughed again, real, relaxed laughter, and for the first time in days, there was no awkwardness in the air.

Just them. Together.

Lena clapped her hands suddenly. "Group hug?"

"Please no," Eli groaned half-heartedly.

"Too late," Kai said, already dragging him in.

And just like that, the whole group collapsed into a chaotic, giggling group hug, awkward arms, too-tight squeezes, and someone accidentally stepping on toes.

But no one pulled away.

Because in that moment, they were whole again.
