Chapter 37 - HEALING IN THE LIGHT

Healing in the Light

Late afternoon. The group has gathered outside, beneath a wide oak tree near the lake.

A gentle breeze rustles through the leaves.

Someone's brought out a checkered blanket, and an old speaker softly plays a nostalgic playlist of songs they all used to love.

Nora (sitting cross-legged, sipping from her mug):

"This tree hasn't changed one bit."

Kai (grinning):

"Unlike us."

Eli:

"We needed this moment. No distractions. No letters. No drama. Just… us."

Lena (softly):

"We broke a little. But maybe we needed to… to understand how much we matter to each other."

Amelia:

"Sometimes healing looks like space.

"Other times, it looks like this, being present. Together."

She looks at Harrison and Eli briefly; there's still tension beneath the surface, but it's softer now, no longer burning with anger.

Harrison looks away first, then back again, slower this time.

Harrison (quietly):

"We hurt each other, yeah. But I still want to be part of this. No half-measures."

Eli (nodding):

"Same. I was scared of losing both Amelia and this group. But maybe… maybe holding on too tightly was what broke things in the first place."

Kai:

"Okay, that's enough emotional vulnerability for one day.

Anyone else sweating from the sheer amount of honesty in the air?"

Everyone laughs.

The tension cracks, just a little more.

Lena:

"Let's make a pact."

Nora:

"Oh no. A Lena pact means we're either climbing something or burying something symbolic."

Lena (smiling):

"No. A promise. That no matter how messy things get, we always come back.

We face each other. Even when it's uncomfortable."

They all slowly nod. Amelia pulls out a small woven bracelet from her bag.

Amelia:

"I made these before the trip. Thought we'd wear them for the shoot. But now… I think they mean more."

She hands them out, each a different color, knotted with quiet care.

Amelia (continuing):

"They're imperfect. Like us. But they're strong."

Kai:

"You're turning into a poet, Ames."

Amelia (smiling):

"Only on weekends."

They put the bracelets on, silently.

No big declarations. Just shared glances and small smiles, like sunlight slowly warming cold skin.

 (Amelia's POV):

Healing wasn't loud.

It didn't come in grand gestures or perfect closure.

It came in these moments, in laughter that felt lighter, in glances that carried forgiveness, and in the quiet understanding that love could survive fractures."

The Unshared Pages

 The evening has settled in.

A small fire crackles near the lake.

The group is seated in a circle, bundled in sweaters and soft blankets.

The stars are just beginning to pepper the sky.

Kai (poking the fire with a stick):

"Alright.

We've laughed, we've cried, Amelia nearly turned poet" (everyone chuckles)

"So... anyone else got something they've been holding in?"

Lena (quietly, almost a whisper):

"I do."

The group is still.

Amelia (gently):

"You don't have to"

Lena:

"I want to."

She takes a breath, eyes fixed on the flames.

Lena:

"You all know I came in late.

And it's always felt like I was trying to catch up to something already beautiful and solid.

But I never told you why I held back at first."

Eli:

"We never meant to make you feel like an outsider."

Lena (shaking her head):

"No.

You didn't.

"It's me… I've always been the one leaving groups before I could be left."

I guess I learned that the hard way."

Everyone listens closely now, the fire casting soft shadows on their faces.

Lena:

"Years ago, I had a friend group like this.

We were close.

Or I thought we were.

Until I went through something dark… my mom had a breakdown, and I became her caretaker.

Things got messy.

I stopped texting, stopped showing up. And one by one… they stopped too."

Nora (softly):

"They left you."

Lena:

"They didn't even ask. Just replaced me.

Like I didn't exist.

So when I met you all, I promised myself not to get too close.

But then" (her voice breaks slightly)

"You pulled me in anyway.

"With your silly games and loud laughter and letters, and chaos.

And I didn't even realize how much I needed that until it was already inside me."

A beat of silence follows.

Amelia (voice thick):

"Lena…"

Lena:

"I just wanted to say thank you.

For proving me wrong.

"For reminding me that not everyone leaves.

I don't say much, I know. But this group… you're my family now. And I don't take that lightly."

Kai (standing abruptly):

"Group hug. Immediate."

Everyone laughs, getting up to envelop Lena in a warm, tight, uncoordinated hug.

She laughs too, freely, for the first time in a while. Her walls, for once, are down.

 (Lena's POV):

Maybe some stories don't need fixing, just listening.

Maybe being seen doesn't require a spotlight, only a firelight circle and people who wait for your voice instead of rushing it.

Amelia (whispering as they hug):

"We're not going anywhere. You're stuck with us now."

 Promise Written in Sand

The sky is painted with pastel shades of orange and pink.

The waves roll gently on the shore.

Lena walks alone on the beach, barefoot, the cool sand slipping between her toes.

The air is soft, like the world is holding its breath.

She hears footsteps behind her.

Turning, she sees Nora holding something in her hand.

Nora (smiling gently):

"I figured you might be out here."

Lena (softly):

"Couldn't sleep. It felt too quiet inside."

Nora nods, walking beside her.

They didn't speak for a while. Just walk, side by side, the tide lapping at their feet.

Then Nora holds out a folded piece of paper. It's a little crinkled, the corner smudged with ink.

Nora:

"I wrote you something.

I didn't want to say it last night with everyone around.

You deserved a moment that was just for you."

Lena takes the letter carefully.

She reads as the ocean hums beside them.

Lena,

You once said you weren't sure you belonged here.

That you felt like an afterthought in a story already being written.

But here's what I see: every chapter we've had since you arrived has been richer, bolder, and warmer because you were in it.

I've seen the way you listen when others speak, the way your quiet comfort anchors our chaos, the way you look after us without needing to be noticed.

You say you were once left behind. I'm sorry for that.

But I want you to know this

We're not the kind of people who leave.

This friendship? It's not built on convenience.

It's built on late-night talks, firelight truths, laughter, silence, and all the little things we never say but always feel.

So here's my promise

As long as you stay, we stay.

And even if the tide comes and washes the footprints away, the memory of walking this beach beside you will always stay with me.

With love,

Nora

As Lena finishes reading, her eyes sting with quiet tears.

She folds the letter slowly and holds it to her chest.

Lena (choked up):

"Thank you, Nora. That's… that's everything I needed to hear."

Nora reaches down and picks up a stick, then begins writing something in the sand near them.

Lena watches as the words take shape:

"You are not alone."

The wind brushes her hair. The waves creep closer, threatening to wash the message away.

Lena:

"It'll disappear."

Nora (smiling):

"Yeah. But not from us."

They stand there, facing the horizon.

A promise made, not on paper or in stone, but in sand, written with love and the certainty that even if the tide erases the words, the heart remembers.
