Bruno sat in his new office and tried not to grin too much.
The chair was larger than the one he had used in his old base. The table was polished. The curtains were clean. Even the people standing outside the door spoke in a softer voice than the men he was used to dealing with.
Two assistants stood near the side wall with files in their hands.
Outside, senior officers and local officials were waiting to meet the new mayor.
Bruno looked around the room again.
For years, he had wanted Gonda's chair.
Now he had taken Gonda's place and also entered this office.
It still felt unreal.
His phone rang.
Bruno looked at the number, and his back straightened at once.
Wil.
He answered immediately.
"Sir."
Adam's voice came from the other side.
"Have you settled yourself in that chair?"
Bruno could not stop the happiness in his voice.
"Sir, I am sitting properly. Everything is stable here."
The two assistants looked at each other.
