Aoi's "test of love" for Zenitsu was primarily intended as a playful prank, as she doubted he possessed the audacity to publicly declare his affection for her throughout the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters.
Such a bold move would easily make him appear foolish, and his declaration would likely be dismissed as a joke.
The challenge, while seemingly requiring only courage, would ultimately prove ineffective.
Zenitsu, however, aimed to use this "test" to corner Aoi, leaving her with no choice but to accept him.
In short, both harbored ulterior motives.
Following this, Zenitsu shamelessly asked Aoi to treat his wounds.
Distracted from her preoccupation with Tanjiro, Aoi obliged Zenitsu's request, tending to his minor injuries.
As days turned into weeks, Zenitsu began formulating his plan to win Aoi over.
He wouldn't foolishly shout his feelings throughout the Corps. He devised a strategy, seeking Ryuji's assistance and confiding in him about his situation with Aoi.
Ryuji, upon hearing Zenitsu's account, smiled in admiration. He knew Aoi harbored feelings for Tanjiro, but he hadn't anticipated Zenitsu's swift move to pursue Aoi after Tanjiro had found a partner in Kanao.
This action, however, was entirely in line with Zenitsu's character. Of their group, he was the most eager to find a partner. Seeing even Tanjiro, a seemingly emotionless person, find love before him, Zenitsu likely felt the pressure.
There might have been an element of desperation, but Ryuji held no prejudice against it.
Tanjiro and Aoi were an unlikely pair; Tanjiro, being so honest, wouldn't accept having two wives. One partner in Kanao was more than enough for him.
Therefore, Zenitsu's pursuit of Aoi seemed reasonable; it kept things within their circle.
Moreover, Aoi's assertive personality could potentially temper Zenitsu's more impulsive nature, making them a surprisingly compatible pair. Aoi also seemed to prefer handsome men, a trait Zenitsu possessed more than Tanjiro.
Excluding Inosuke's rather feminine features, Zenitsu was the second most handsome of their group, with Ryuji being the most handsome.
However, after listening to Zenitsu, Ryuji countered, "Zenitsu, does this mean you're giving up on Nezuko?"
Zenitsu paused, then nodded. "Ryuji-senpai, it's not that I've changed my feelings, but I feel I'm not suitable for Nezuko. I just want a simple life."
Seeing Zenitsu's attempt to maintain his image, Ryuji patted his shoulder, smiling. "No need to explain, I understand. Being with Nezuko carries too much responsibility; you're not suited for it."
Ryuji held no resentment towards Zenitsu for his shift in affections, remembering that his initial introduction of Nezuko to Zenitsu was merely to fulfill a promise made on Mount Natagumo.
