"I'm not here to make fun of you, or pity you. I just want to say that some things, once missed, are gone. If you don't let go, you'll only suffer more," Zenitsu continued.
Aoi was surprised by Zenitsu's words, sensing their sincerity. It felt as if Zenitsu had experienced something similar.
"There are plenty of fish in the sea. You might consider a great catch like me,"
Zenitsu added, abruptly breaking the somber mood.
Aoi, enraged by his self-promotion, slapped him. "A leopard can't change its spots!"
She stormed off without looking back. She felt Zenitsu's words were insincere, hence the slap.
Aoi believed Zenitsu only wanted her body.
Zenitsu, clutching his aching cheek, called after her, undeterred. "Aoi-chan, I'm serious! Please consider it!"
"Even if all the men in the world died, I wouldn't consider you!"
Aoi stopped, turning back to Zenitsu.
Seeing that she hadn't completely dismissed him, Zenitsu, emboldened, confessed, "I'm serious, I like you, Aoi-chan! Can't you give me a chance?!"
Zenitsu's confession was largely spurred by Tanjiro and Kanao's relationship.
While Zenitsu had always liked Nezuko, he knew it was one-sided. Moreover, Nezuko was a demon, with an uncertain future—would she ever become human again? Even if she did, would she accept him?
The uncertainties, combined with Tanjiro and Kanao's situation, pushed Zenitsu to seek a girlfriend, planning for his future.
Zenitsu's fickleness was his nature. However, he knew choosing someone other than Nezuko meant giving up on her as a romantic partner.
This didn't mean completely severing ties with Nezuko; Zenitsu still enjoyed her company. After all, Nezuko was incredibly cute and beautiful.
