Hearing Ikki's words, Jonathan scratched the back of his head in embarrassment. He knew what he did was wrong, but he hadn't had the chance to command his men in a proper tactical encirclement in a long time, so he hadn't paid much attention to the game's rules.
"Haha, Mr. Ikki, next time we play, I promise we won't team up like that," Jonathan said with a laugh. "I'm also honored that you guys from the Private Marine can visit G-8. After the game, as the host, I'll naturally treat you all to a good meal."
Luffy immediately cheered at the mention of food. Seeing this, Ikki just shook his head. The fact that Jonathan was talking about "after this game" meant he still wanted to keep playing, and that left Ikki speechless.
Soon, the final winner of the game was announced. It wasn't Jonathan's sailors, but rather Steve Rogers, Captain America.
Rogers was a master of fighting against multiple opponents. Without Jonathan's command, the sailors were effectively brainless, making them easy targets.
After that match, Ikki played several more solo games. As a Marine Lieutenant General, Jonathan was a surprisingly powerful player.
His physical fitness was the same as everyone else in the game, but his strategic mind and higher-level skills made him better than Luffy and the other experienced players. In every subsequent round, Jonathan managed to finish in the top five.
It wasn't until Ikki started the four-player team mode that Jonathan rediscovered the joy of being a commander. In this mode, players could form teams in the viewing hall. If a team didn't have enough players, AIs would fill the spots.
Jonathan picked his teammates carefully. He didn't just choose Marines; he selected players who could give his team the best chance to win.
From the previous games, he had already identified the best candidates: Usopp, with his impeccable marksmanship; Karoo, a master of reconnaissance who moved in surprising ways; and a Marine who could follow orders flawlessly.
Meanwhile, Steve Rogers chose three physically strong Marines. Kakashi chose Sabo and two other Marines, seemingly planning to stay low and win by attrition.
Ikki, on the other hand, chose Luffy, Zoro, and Princess Vivi, with the unique strategy of letting Zoro be the team's guide. He thought this might be a shortcut to the finals.
With all the teams set, the game began.
At the G-8 fortress, Drake looked worriedly at the Going Merry. He wanted to go in and rescue his general, Jonathan, but he was afraid he might also disappear, leaving G-8 in chaos.
G-8 was an important fortress, a supply and rest point for Marines from all over. If it were left unguarded, it would descend into chaos.
At that moment, a beautiful blonde woman in a chef's uniform walked over, a worried expression on her face.
"Madam⊠why are you here?" Drake asked nervously when he saw Jessica.
Though she was only the head chef of G-8, no one dared to mess with her. Not only was she Jonathan's wife, but cooks are also respected on the seas. Besides, Jessica was a strong woman in her own right.
"Just by looking at you, I can tell something has happened to Jonathan," Jessica said.
Drake secretly lowered his head in shame. "I'm sorry, ma'am. If I had just gone into the Going Merry first, this wouldn't have happenedâŠ"
Jessica cut him off before he could finish. "A Marine Headquarters warship will be arriving at G-8 soon. You go handle that first. Leave this to me."
"But⊠butâŠ"
"But what?" she glared, and the usually imposing Drake immediately fell silent. He could only obey and head to the port.
After Drake left, Jessica pulled out a Den Den Mushi. Jonathan's friend at Marine Headquarters had given it to him a long time ago in case of an emergency.
Jonathan was a dedicated Marine. He could have joined Headquarters long ago, but he was wary of the corruption there, so he never accepted a promotion.
Jessica didn't know what was happening on the Going Merry, but for her husband's sake, she had no choice but to contact the Marine executive. The call was quickly answered, and a deep voice came through.
"Hello? Who is this?"
"I'm Jessica, Jonathan's wife."
Jessica quickly explained the situation. "I understand," the voice on the other end said. "Is this the Straw Hats' ship? I'll be there soon! Don't let anyone else go inside."
Meanwhile, Jonathan was completely engrossed in the game. He had originally planned to stop after just one team match. After all, he didn't want his wife to worry.
But the thrill of commanding his team again was too much. As a Marine Lieutenant General and base commander, he rarely had the chance to take direct action. Being able to wipe out the competition with his teammates was a great way to relieve years of pressure.
After playing five games in a row, Jonathan's team finally got the victory.
After they won, he finally calmed down. "Damn it! I didn't even realize how long I'd been playing."
Having spent so much time with the Straw Hats, he had even picked up some of their casual speech patterns.
"Uncle⊠didn't you say you were going to treat me to dinner?" Luffy whined, lying limply on the ground. "I'm starving!"
In the game, players didn't feel hungry, but Luffy was different. He felt hungry whenever he didn't eat, a pure instinct.
"Alright, let's head out now. You guys are in for a treat; my wife's cooking is incredible!"
"Oh? Really?" Sanji said, lighting a cigarette. "I'd love to see for myself."
"Not only is her cooking amazing," Ikki interjected, "she's also beautiful."
Hearing that, Sanji's eyes immediately lit up. "Then I definitely want to see Mrs. Jonathan's cooking skills!"
Ikki glanced at Sanji and cursed him in his mind.
When the game ended, everyone popped out of the game arena. Jonathan immediately saw his wife, Jessica. Next to her was a slightly embarrassed man, his friend Sakazuki from Marine Headquarters.
