Chapter 23 - The Dragon Severs

Genshi roams about the home, taking in all the paintings of Alpha, Gamma, and Omega. She lingers about the ones with the three gods together more than those of them solo. Eta follows the elder Goddess like a mother hen. Genshi just leads the younger Goddess about the place, her mind painting a picture of how Eta came to be who she is through the paintings. Each one fitting a new piece into an ever growing puzzle that is Eta.

"I had come to love mortals and such because of their odd dedication to art, but this blows everything out of the water. I am genuinely surprised that you don't have an aspect of creation in your soul with all of this." Genshi reaches out and gently brushes her fingers over one of the three gods talking at the table. They even seem to react to the sudden, but loving intrusion. "Such a beautiful existence. Something so different than any god I have ever met."

Eta hangs up a new piece on the wall, one of a man made of fire reaching through a floor while Genshi stands above it, stamping down on the man. The painting made in extremely harsh brush strokes creating a noticeable texture. It glows in a soft red from the man and then a pale-purple from Genshi.

"And this already tells me something new about your story. Who was he?" Genshi places her hand on the man of fire in the painting, his glow dimming.

"Chi. I had met him when I was trying to learn about the beings past the barrier. He was different to the lost ones until I had realized he was also a part of the void. He then found a way to enter the barrier after becoming something of a living flame with the intent of killing me." Eta looks at the painting of her two visitors. The two could not be more different. One came as a killer while the other a seeming wealth of knowledge.

Genshi finds the texture of a branch within Chi's chest. "Oh, he was a first flame. Was he difficult to defeat?"

"He should have killed me. I should be dead, but the fact that this chose me." Eta raises her left hand where the black film has settled. "Stopped him from dealing a killing blow. Then I wrote the law to remove his power should he attack."

"You shouldn't have had a problem with him. Your power should be leagues above his even if he had the power from the Void. I take it you only use your tools, is that right?" Eta nods. "Eta, to be a god really is about using your natural powers more than anything. I can see the brush is your truly and it acts as a focus for your dominion. But, you should try and learn to do what you normally do without it."

Genshi pushes off the painting and heads back outside, the night now day with the sun shining high over head.

"How am I to learn?"

"Place your brush down and leave it there until you have learned. You cannot practice with it in your possession."

Eta sets down her rainbow glass brush on a small patch of moss. The moss gently hugs the brush as it keeps it securely in place. Upon parting with the brush, a chorus of words rush into Eta's mind. The ceaseless jabbering of all the souls in the universe flood her head like a tidal wave. The cacophony absolutely deafening.

Genshi rushes over to the now crumpling Eta. She grabs a set of invisible strings that lead directly to Eta and squeezes them hard. The deafening sounds noticeably retreat into a mild drone of words.

"How?" Eta's melody weak and slow.

"You are connected to every soul in this universe directly. First, I do need to sever this from you if you are to master your powers. Mind you, this will make a truly deafening silence and probably a sense of loneliness you've never experienced. May I do so Eta?" Genshi pulls more of the strings into her grasp. Her hand more draconic as her hand mold into a claw to better hold the strings.

Eta looks up at the elder Goddess, her face that of confidence. One that could make the very world bend a knee if need be. Then she looks to the strings, feeling the words and thoughts of all souls within them. The one thing she has her tool for, to silence them to a manageable magnitude. Would a true silence be really so much different? Would it hurt to be without other's thoughts? She doesn't know unless she allows it to happen.

"I need at least one connection Genshi. One to keep me grounded."

"Fair enough." Genshi places a hand on her chest and pulls out the same invisible string and places it on Eta's hand. "I'll ground you." She grasps her claw as all the strings sever.

The ceaseless jabbering ceases, now a single voice of confidence rings out. One of gentle reassurance with an infallible belief that it can solve all things given the chance. That voice is of Genshi's soul.

"How is it, is it more quiet?" Genshi helps Eta back to her feet.

"Very much so. Why is your soul so sure?"

She chuckles, "I exude my dominion over combat in everything I do. I treat everything as a battle which I can win. Combat of the mind, of thought, of strategy, of power, of creativity, anything. And since I see it all as combat, it means I can do anything as I preside over it." Genshi walks over to the edge of the pillar, the one where the three sibling gods said their final goodbyes. "To live by your soul is to be every ounce of yourself. A being of creation will find pure joy in such, just as a being of destruction in would find in destroying."

"And how should I live?"

"Live as you choose. You are a being of soul itself compounded with emotion and chaos. Your path will forever be defined by what you do and you must find the meaning in that. I can only be a guide as we both explore what makes you truly you." Genshi looks to the horizon, her form causing the surrounding air to shimmer with energy once more.

"You are a strange Goddess Genshi." Eta joins her at the edge adding to the shimmering of the air.

A single line connecting the two, the elder's soul laid bare for the younger to hear.
