Mai's eyes widened in surprise. The words echoed within her, a truth she dared not face. "No… it's… it's not possible…" she whispered, her breath short.
Ryosuke fixed his gaze on Mai, a calm smile on his lips. "So… you know now?" he repeated.
Mai swallowed hard, feeling a tightness in her chest. After a moment of silence, she murmured, "You mean… you could change my sister's and my fate?" Her tone, despite herself, carried a vulnerable hope she tried to hide by slightly averting her eyes.
Ryosuke shook his head slowly, his eyes never leaving her. "No, I don't have that power," he replied simply.
Mai's heart sank, and she opened her mouth to protest, but he cut her off, raising a hand slightly as if to calm the rising turmoil within her.
"But," he continued, weighing each word, "I can alter that fate. Not to break it or replace it… but to ease the suffering it imposes on you and your sister. I can offer you a kind of freedom. Not absolute, perhaps… but close."
Mai frowned, troubled. "Almost free?" she whispered. "I don't understand. As long as one of us lives… the other can never truly be free, can she? Our fate is sealed, no matter what we do."
Ryosuke nodded slowly. "Yes, that's true. Your bond is unbreakable, and it's not about severing what you share. But even in captivity, it's possible to create a form of freedom. It's possible to live with a shared fate without it being such a painful burden."
With a calm gesture, he held out his ice cream toward her. Under Mai's astonished gaze, the ice cream seemed to warp, its color shifting slightly, its shape altering almost imperceptibly before returning to its original state, as if nothing had happened.
She stared at him, mouth agape.
Ryosuke gave a mysterious, almost mischievous smile. "My innate CT," he explained softly, "allows me to alter concepts. No concept is truly independent: every idea, every fate, every bond is influenced by another. They feed off each other, change, transform endlessly… like a vicious cycle."
He looked at her intently, searching to see if she grasped the weight of his words. "And it's the same for you and your sister," he went on. "It's not about sacrificing one for the other, but about altering the burden that weighs so heavily on you both. That bond that means, no matter what you do, one suffers for the other, and vice versa. In short… what I'm offering is to free your bond."
Mai lowered her eyes, realizing her ice cream was melting, the sweet liquid dripping onto her hand unnoticed. Her mind was elsewhere, swept away by the vision Ryosuke had just offered.
"Free… our bond?" she repeated, her voice trembling, as if the words tasted new, almost unreal.
Ryosuke nodded, his gaze still fixed on her. "Yes. What I'm offering," he said, his voice low but clear, "is a different kind of freedom. A balance between you two, where neither of you would be condemned to suffer for the other anymore. It wouldn't end your bond, but it would be a new way to live it."
Mai furrowed her brow. She clenched her fists. "What do you think, exactly? That I'll swallow your pretty words and start hoping like an idiot?" She fixed him with a piercing stare, her eyes like blades. "I forbid you from giving me false hope. If you can't do anything, say it now, but don't toy with me."
Ryosuke remained still, looking at her calmly, his expression still tinged with that strange serenity. He gave a slight shrug, an enigmatic smile on his lips. "False hope, huh?" he murmured, almost to himself. Then he met her gaze. "Tell me, Mai… what do I gain by lying to you? Why would I bother making up stories like this, especially about something that means so much to you?"
Mai opened her mouth, searching for a response, but no words came. She looked away, staring at the ground.
"You've seen what I can do. This isn't about promises or pretty words. It's about facts." Ryosuke crossed his arms, his eyes locked on hers. "Now, the real question is… are you ready to try?"
Silence fell between them. Finally, she looked up at him, her gaze harder. "Fine," she said coldly. "Do it. Show me you can really change this damned bond between my sister and me."
Ryosuke gave a faint smile. He shook his head gently, raising a hand to temper her fervor. "Not so fast. It's not that simple. If I'm going to do this, it has to be with both you and your sister… at the same time."
Mai froze, her eyes widening slightly. "Why?" she asked, suspicion creeping back instantly. "Why does she need to be there? This bond is in me, isn't it? It's because of me that she suffers. You should be able to change it without her."
Ryosuke shook his head. "It's not that simple. Your bond… it doesn't belong to you alone, or to her alone. It's shared. You're like two sides of the same coin. I can't alter one without affecting the other."
Mai looked away, clenching her teeth to hold back the wave of emotions rising within her. Anger, frustration, despair… they all collided in her heart.
"So what you're saying," she murmured, her voice trembling, "is that you can't do anything. Not unless she's here. And even if she was… how could I trust you?"
"It's not about trust, Mai. It's about choice." His tone became almost a whisper. "If you want me to do this, you both have to be ready. Otherwise, this bond will stay as it is, and nothing will change."
Mai understood the logic. She knew he was right, but the thought of confronting her sister, of talking to her… it was a mountain she wasn't sure she could climb. Yet, deep inside, a small spark of hope refused to die.
She looked up at Ryosuke, her fists still clenched, but her voice softened slightly. "And if I trust you… how are you going to do it?"
Ryosuke gave a lighter smile this time, almost teasing. "That's a surprise. But don't worry… you'll know when the time comes."
Mai stared at him for a moment before letting out a frustrated sigh. "You're really insufferable."
"And yet, you haven't hit me yet," he replied with a shrug.
Despite herself, Mai felt a corner of her lips twitch upward, a faint smile she quickly suppressed. "You'd better not disappoint me, Ryosuke. Or else…"
