He lifted his head, his eyes scanning the room once more. Still no one. His gaze drifted over the spotless blackboard, then to the perfectly aligned desks. He sat down on a chair, leaning back nonchalantly, one leg crossed over the other.
"The students of Jujutsu High, late? Impossible. We're talking about people who are supposed to be ready to save lives at any moment. The kind who don't stay under the covers on a Monday morningâŠ"
He sighed, this time with a mix of frustration and resignation.
"Maybe I'm just⊠too motivated? Guess I need to work on that."
The silence in the room was starting to feel heavy, almost unsettling. Ryosuke drummed his fingers nervously on the desk before springing to his feet, unable to sit still. He walked to the windows, glanced outside. Nothing unusual there either. The place seemed deserted, as if the entire school had been swallowed into another dimension.
Then the door creaked.
A sound, finally!
Ryosuke turned his head sharply, a smile ready to spread across his face, but it froze the moment he saw the rigid silhouette of Mechamaru in the doorway.
"Finally, someone!" Ryosuke exclaimed, throwing his arms up. "But seriously, you're late too?"
Mechamaru stepped inside, his movements still as mechanical as ever.
"Late for what? You didn't know?"
Ryosuke blinked, raising a brow.
"Know what? What exactly am I supposed to know?"
Mechamaru crossed his arms.
"We've been deployed."
The word echoed in Ryosuke's mind. His eyes widened as he took a step toward his classmate.
"Deployed?! Wait, but it's the first day of school!"
"Wrong. It's after vacation. Classes started months ago. You're walking in like it's day one."
Ryosuke froze, his face painted with a mix of surprise and embarrassment.
"Oh⊠That explains why no one's here," he muttered under his breath.
He ran a hand through his hair, trying to regain composure. Then, suddenly, his usual energy returned. He grabbed his bag, slung it over his shoulder, and flashed a dazzling smile at Mechamaru.
"Well, a mission right after vacation isn't so bad! Come on, tell me where we're going."
Mechamaru turned on his heel, opening the door.
"This will be your first mission," he said without looking back.
Ryosuke adjusted his scarf, his grin widening.
"Don't worry, I've got this. But if we could avoid ruining my sneakers, that'd be great."
"Your white sneakers won't survive this mission."

In front of the school's imposing gates, the wind blew gently, lifting fallen leaves from the paved ground. Ryosuke walked casually beside Mechamaru.
A few steps ahead, a woman stood waiting, straight as a rod, arms crossed. She wore a flawless black suit, her short hair neatly cut. A pair of square glasses rested lightly on her nose. She held a tablet, scrolling through it with focused attention.
Ryosuke slowed his pace, one hand slipping into the pocket of his fitted pants, the other carelessly adjusting his navy-blue scarf. His gaze fixed on the woman with a mix of curiosity and skepticism.
As they approached, Ryosuke noticed her eyes flick toward him briefly. A barely noticeable arch of her brow betrayed her reaction, but she said nothing. When they reached her, she lifted her head, letting the tablet fall against her hip.
"You're finally here," she declared in a clipped tone. Her eyes moved from Mechamaru to Ryosuke, then to his scarf, before returning to his face. "Student Mechamaru. Student Ryosuke. Starting today, you are a team."
Ryosuke raised a brow, surprised. "A team? Wait, wait," he said, raising a hand to cut off what he considered a possible misunderstanding. "You mean⊠him and me? Like, together?"
He jabbed a thumb at Mechamaru, flashing a mocking grin. Beside him, Mechamaru remained immobile, as expressionless as a well-oiled machine. Which, in part, he was.
The woman in the suit didn't even bother responding. Her eyes had already returned to her tablet. "Your first mission starts immediately. An anomaly has been detected in the western industrial zone. You'll get the details on the way."
Ryosuke folded his arms, adopting a laid-back posture.
A tense silence settled in, but it didn't stop him. His smile widened as he tilted slightly toward Mechamaru. "So, we're paired up, huh? Interesting. Very interesting."
Mechamaru just stared at him with his blank eyes, unmoving. The lack of response only encouraged Ryosuke. He shoved his hands into his pockets and leaned slightly closer.
"Honestly, I'd have preferred to be with Mai," he said in a drawl, pretending to reflect. "You know, she's⊠how should I put it⊠super professional. That would've let me relax a little." He turned his head toward Mechamaru, a mischievous smile tugging at his lips. "But youâI bet you wanted to be with Kasumi, right?"
Mechamaru stayed silent. No movement, no words. His silence, heavy as a stone wall, might have discouraged anyone else. But not Ryosuke.
"Come on, admit it," he pressed, leaning in a bit. "I'm sure inside, you're blushing right now."
Mechamaru still didn't react, but Ryosuke burst out laughing, patting his comrade's metal chest. "I knew it. I'm right, aren't I? Seriously, you should be more expressive. I bet she likes you. Maybe. Who knows."
The woman in the suit lifted her head, her piercing gaze cutting into their exchange. "If you're finished," she said sharply, "it would be best to begin. We don't have all day."
Ryosuke raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. No need to get worked up. But you could at least tell us your name, don't you think?"
She let out a faint sigh. "Call me Ito."
"Ito, huh?" Ryosuke repeated with a grin. "Sounds nice. You're going to love working with me, I'm pure sunshine."
Ito ignored him and stepped aside, revealing a black car with tinted windows parked behind her. With a wave of her hand, she pointed to the open door.
"Get in."
