🌑 Chapter 39 — The Night of the Shadows
The first scream came from the eastern side of the pack grounds.
Then another.
Then the sound of dozens of wolves racing across the earth.
The Crimson Dusk Pack was under attack.
Jayden stood at the top of the stairs, Xander held securely beside him, while James stood several feet away, fighting against the dark mark spreading across his wrist.
"Jayden..." James whispered. "Get him somewhere safe."
Jayden's eyes narrowed.
"Are you warning me?"
James nodded.
"I don't have much control left."
The shadows around him began moving.
"Then fight for it," Jayden said.
James looked at him.
"For Ivy."
Something changed in James's expression.
He nodded.
"For Ivy."
He turned and ran toward the outer hall.
Jayden immediately carried Xander toward the underground chamber.

The Three Keepers
Ivy, Jake, and Kael emerged from the hidden chamber just as another tremor shook the building.
The pack warriors were rushing through the halls.
Aslam appeared at the end of the corridor, holding a sword.
"We're surrounded."
Jake's eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"Too many to count."
Kael looked toward Ivy.
"Then we don't count them."
Ivy raised an eyebrow.
"What do we do?"
Kael smiled.
"We end the attack."
Ivy felt the power inside her responding.
Wind moved around her feet.
Water gathered in the air.
Tiny sparks of fire danced between her fingers.
The earth beneath them trembled.
Jake noticed.
"You're controlling all four."
Ivy looked at her hands.
"I think I'm finally getting the hang of it."
Aslam smiled.
"Good."
She raised her sword.
"Because they're coming."

The Forest
Thousands of shadows moved between the trees.
At their center stood the dark-eyed man.
Malthor's chosen vessel.
His silver eyes glowed as he watched the pack house.
Beside him stood Elias.
"You promised me the Keeper," Elias said.
The dark-eyed man smiled.
"I promised you power."
"I helped you find them."
"And you will be rewarded."
Elias looked toward the pack house.
"And if the children unite?"
The man's smile disappeared.
"Then we kill the bond before it becomes complete."
Elias swallowed.
"And if they cannot be separated?"
The man turned toward him.
"Then the world burns with them."

The Battle Begins
The first wave reached the gates.
Warriors charged.
The night exploded into motion.
Jayden joined the fight, moving with the speed and precision of an Alpha.
Aslam fought beside him.
Jake and Kael stood back-to-back.
"You always fight this well?" Kael asked.
Jake smirked.
"Better than you."
"Still arrogant."
"Still alive."
They laughed briefly.
For the first time, they fought like brothers.
Then a shadow broke through the defensive line.
It rushed toward Ivy.
She raised her hand.
Fire erupted.
The creature vanished.
Another came from behind.
Wind slammed it into the ground.
A third emerged beneath her.
The earth rose around it.
Ivy spun.
Water formed a powerful barrier around Xander.
He stared at her in amazement.
"Mommy is magic!"
Jayden glanced toward him.
"She always has been."

James stood alone near the western gate.
The dark mark on his wrist burned brighter.
A voice whispered inside his mind.
"Stop fighting."
James gritted his teeth.
"No."
"You belong to us."
"No."
"You were chosen."
James looked toward the pack house.
He saw Ivy.
He remembered her kindness.
Her laughter.
The way she'd trusted him before everything changed.
"I chose my own side."
The silver ring around his eyes flared.
The dark mark cracked.
James screamed as the shadows around him burst outward.
For one moment, everything became still.
Then the mark disappeared.
James collapsed to his knees.
He was free.

A sudden silence swept across the battlefield.
Every shadow stopped moving.
Every warrior froze.
Ivy felt the change immediately.
Someone was approaching.
Footsteps echoed through the courtyard.

The dark-eyed man walked through the broken gates.
Malthor's chosen vessel.
His gaze found Ivy.
"Finally."
Ivy stepped forward.
"You've been hiding behind everyone else long enough."
He smiled.
"You have no idea what you are."
"I know exactly what I am."
Her eyes glowed violet.
"I'm Ivy."
The man's smile widened.
"No."
He lifted his hand.
"You are Ivora."
The ground shook.
The three siblings suddenly felt their powers react.
Jake stepped beside Ivy.
Kael joined them.
Malthor looked at the three of them.
"The lost children."
He laughed softly.
"Together at last."
Ivy's expression hardened.
"You wanted us separated."
"Yes."
"Why?"
The man looked toward the sky.
"Because together, you can destroy me."
Silence.
Ivy stared at him.
"Then why are you here?"
His eyes flashed silver.
"Because I finally found something you cannot fight."
He looked toward Xander.
Ivy immediately moved in front of her son.
"No."
The man's smile disappeared.
"Exactly."
Jayden stepped beside Ivy.
"You'll never touch him."
The man looked at Jayden.
"You think this is about the boy?"
Jayden's expression tightened.
"What else could it be?"
The man smiled.
"It's about what the boy becomes."
Everyone went silent.
Xander looked confused.
"What does he mean, Mommy?"
Ivy pulled him close.
"I don't know."
But deep inside...
She knew something was coming.
The man's eyes suddenly glowed brighter.
"The prophecy has already begun."
A crack of thunder split the sky.
And far beneath the earth...
The First Seal shattered completely.
Ivy's eyes widened.
Jake whispered,
"That's impossible."
Kael looked toward the mountains.
"No."
He shook his head.
"It's happening."
A deep roar echoed across the entire valley.
Malthor smiled.
"Welcome to the beginning of the end."
The ground beneath them began to shake.
And somewhere in the darkness...
something ancient awakened.
