đ Chapter 45 â The Enemy Within
The temple fell completely silent.
Ivy stood frozen in front of her mother.
Elira.
Alive.
After twelve years of believing she had lost her forever, Ivy finally had her mother standing only a few feet away.
But there was no time to celebrate.
The silver eyes in the darkness multiplied.
One pair.
Then two.
Then five.
Then dozens.
Jayden immediately stepped in front of Xander.
"Stay behind me."
Jake and Kael moved beside Ivy.
Aslam drew her sword.
Elias backed toward the wall, his face pale.
"Elira..." he whispered.
The Luna looked at him.
"You knew this would happen."
Elias shook his head.
"I didn't know they would find us this quickly."
Ivy's eyes narrowed.
"You two know each other?"
Elira didn't answer.
Instead, she looked directly at Ivy.
"Listen carefully. Whatever happens, do not let them separate the four of you."
"The four of us?" Jake asked.
Elira looked at him.
"You, Ivy, Kael..."
Her gaze shifted toward the darkness.
"...and the fourth."
A figure stepped forward.
Ivy's breath caught.
It was a girl.
She looked about Ivy's age.
Long silver-blonde hair.
Violet eyes.
And a crescent-shaped mark glowing faintly on her wrist.
Ivy stared at her.
"Who are you?"
The girl looked at her with tears in her eyes.
Then she whispered one word.
"Sister."
Jake went completely still.
Kael's mouth fell open.
"No..."
The girl stepped into the light.
"My name is Lyra."
Ivy couldn't speak.
The fourth sibling.
The one they'd spent days searching for.
She had been inside the temple all along.
---
The Truth About Lyra
Lyra looked toward Elira.
"You promised you'd tell them."
Elira nodded slowly.
"I know."
Ivy stepped forward.
"Tell us everything."
Elira took a breath.
"When the attack happened twelve years ago, your father knew the enemy was coming for all four of you."
Jake's expression hardened.
"But we only knew about three."
"Because Lyra was hidden before the attack."
Kael looked at his mother.
"Why?"
"Because she carried something none of you did."
Ivy frowned.
"What?"
Elira looked toward Lyra's glowing mark.
"The Key."
The chamber trembled.
Malthor's voice echoed through the temple.
"At last."
Everyone turned.
A dark mist began forming at the center of the room.
Elira's face tightened.
"He found us."
The mist gathered into a tall figure.
Dark eyes.
Silver markings.
A crown of shadow.
Malthor.
But this time, he wasn't using a vessel.
He was standing there in his true form.
Jake stepped forward.
"You've been hiding behind others this whole time."
Malthor smiled.
"I didn't need to reveal myself until now."
Ivy's hands began glowing.
"You murdered our family."
"No."
Malthor looked at her.
"I separated your family."
His gaze moved toward Lyra.
"And it worked."
Lyra stepped forward.
"You failed."
Malthor's smile disappeared.
"I wouldn't be so certain."
---
The Four
The symbols beneath the siblings suddenly illuminated.
Silver beneath Jake.
Violet beneath Ivy.
Gold beneath Kael.
And white beneath Lyra.
The entire temple began shaking.
Kael looked down.
"The prophecy."
Jake nodded.
"The four bloodlines."
Elira shouted:
"Don't resist the connection!"
Ivy looked at her.
"What happens if we do?"
"You'll lose control."
The four siblings reached for one another.
Jake took Ivy's hand.
Ivy took Kael's.
Kael reached toward Lyra.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Thenâ
BOOM!
A massive wave of energy exploded through the temple.
Malthor was thrown backward.
The ancient walls lit up.
Four enormous symbols appeared above them.
The temple had awakened.
Malthor slowly stood.
His expression was no longer amused.
"You have no idea what you've just done."
Ivy stepped forward.
"Maybe not."
Her eyes glowed brighter.
"But we're learning."
---
The Betrayal
Suddenly, Elias moved.
He grabbed Lyra's arm.
Jake immediately turned.
"Get away from her!"
Elias pulled Lyra toward the shadows.
Ivy raised her hand.
"Elias!"
He stopped.
His expression was filled with pain.
"Ivy..."
"Don't."
He looked at her.
"I never wanted this."
"Then let her go."
Elias hesitated.
Malthor laughed.
"Poor Elias."
Elias looked toward him.
"You promised me freedom."
"I promised you power."
"You lied."
Malthor smiled.
"Of course I did."
Elias looked at Ivy.
Then at Lyra.
Then at Elira.
Something inside him finally broke.
He released Lyra.
"Run."
Malthor's eyes flashed.
"Elias."
Elias turned toward him.
"I've spent twelve years regretting what I did."
He drew the ancient sword he'd been carrying.
"I'm done serving you."
Malthor raised his hand.
Dark energy struck Elias, sending him across the chamber.
"Elias!"
Ivy ran forward, but Jake stopped her.
"Wait!"
Elias slowly pushed himself upright.
"I'm sorry, Ivora."
He looked toward Elira.
"Protect them."
Elira nodded.
Elias turned back toward Malthor.
And charged.
---
The Battle of Origins
Everything happened at once.
Jake shifted.
Kael summoned a golden barrier.
Lyra's power exploded outward.
Ivy raised both hands.
Fire and wind spiraled around her.
Jayden grabbed Xander and moved him behind a stone pillar with Aslam.
"Stay here!"
Xander nodded.
"But Mommy..."
"She'll be okay."
Across the chamber, Elias fought Malthor.
For a few moments, he held his ground.
Then Malthor caught his sword.
"You were always weak."
Elias smiled sadly.
"Maybe."
He looked toward Ivy.
"But she taught me something."
Malthor frowned.
"What's that?"
Elias released the sword.
"People can choose who they become."
He slammed his hand against the ground.
The temple erupted with light.
Malthor stumbled backward.
Ivy understood immediately.
"Elias is opening the seal!"
Elira's eyes widened.
"No!"
Ivy looked at her.
"What?"
"He'll trap himself inside with Malthor!"
Elias heard her.
He smiled.
"Some debts have to be paid."
Ivy shook her head.
"No!"
She ran toward him.
"Elias!"
He looked back.
"For what it's worth..."
His voice softened.
"...I'm glad I met you."
A brilliant flash filled the chamber.
Ivy shielded her eyes.
When the light fadedâ
Elias was gone.
So was Malthor.
The temple became silent.
Ivy stood frozen.
Jake placed a hand on her shoulder.
"He chose his side."
She nodded slowly.
"But he didn't have to die."
Elira looked toward the sealed chamber.
"Perhaps he hasn't."
Everyone turned.
"What do you mean?" Jayden asked.
Elira stared at the glowing seal.
"The Temple of Origins doesn't take lives."
Her voice was quiet.
"It takes prisoners."
Ivy looked at the seal.
A faint shadow moved behind it.
And thenâ
Elias's voice whispered from the other side.
"Don't forget me."
Ivy's eyes filled with tears.
"I won't."
---
The Final Prophecy
Lyra suddenly cried out.
Her mark began glowing intensely.
Elira rushed toward her.
"Lyra!"
The girl collapsed into her mother's arms.
Ivy stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Elira looked terrified.
"The Key has awakened."
Kael frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Elira looked at the four siblings.
"It means the final seal can now be opened."
Jake's expression hardened.
"Shouldn't we stop it?"
Elira shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because the final seal isn't keeping the enemy inside."
Everyone froze.
Elira whispered:
"It's keeping something else out."
A tremendous roar echoed beneath the temple.
The walls shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Xander looked at Jayden.
"Daddy..."
Jayden stared toward the floor.
"What is that?"
Elira slowly looked at Ivy.
"The real enemy."
The temple cracked.
And beneath their feet...
something began climbing toward them.
End of Chapter 45.
