Chapter 34 - ECHOES LEFT BEHIND

Chapter 33: Echoes Left Behind🕳️

The first rays of dawn slipped through the towering windows of the Crimson Dusk Pack House, illuminating dust particles that drifted lazily through the air.

Outside, the estate was slowly returning to life.

Carpenters repaired the shattered walls left behind by Malachar's attack while warriors patrolled the borders with renewed vigilance. Every guard post had been doubled. Every entrance was watched.

No one believed Malachar was finished.

Neither did Ivy.

She stood alone on the eastern balcony, wrapped in one of Jayden's oversized hoodies. The cool morning breeze carried the scent of pine and damp earth, but it did little to settle the unease in her heart.

For the first time in years, she knew who she was.

Or at least...

She knew who she had been.

An Alpha's daughter.

Jake's little sister.

The child her parents had died protecting.

Yet somehow those answers only created more questions.

Who had Malachar really been before the attack?

Why had her parents feared him so much?

And why did he keep calling her Ivora, a name no one had spoken in twelve years?

She sighed.

"I knew I'd find you here."

Jayden's voice was warm behind her.

Without asking, he stepped beside her, offering a steaming mug of hot chocolate instead of coffee.

She smiled.

"You remembered."

"You always drink this when you're overwhelmed."

She accepted the mug, wrapping both hands around it.

"I don't think I've ever been this confused."

Jayden leaned against the railing.

"You don't have to figure everything out today."

"I know."

"But what if I'm becoming someone I don't recognize?"

He turned toward her.

"You won't."

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because I've watched you choose kindness when revenge would've been easier."

He gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"Powers don't decide who you are."

"Choices do."

Her eyes shimmered.

"I don't deserve you."

He laughed quietly.

"Good."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Because I don't deserve you either."

For the first time since the attack...

She laughed.

A real laugh.

Inside the mansion, another battle was taking place.

"...and dragons can breathe blue fire!" Xander declared confidently.

Jake looked up from the floor where wooden blocks were scattered everywhere.

"I thought dragons breathed orange fire."

"Only baby dragons."

"Oh."

Jake nodded seriously.

"That makes perfect sense."

Xander grinned.

"I know."

Across the room, Aslam leaned against the doorway, hiding a smile.

"I've seen Alphas negotiate peace treaties."

She folded her arms.

"But I've never seen one lose an argument to a five-year-old."

Jake looked up.

"I wasn't losing."

"You absolutely were."

"I was gathering information."

She laughed.

"So that's what we're calling it now?"

Jake stood, brushing imaginary dust from his shirt.

"I'll have you know, Miss Wolf-Blooded Gentlewoman, that diplomacy is an Alpha's greatest weapon."

Aslam raised an eyebrow.

"I thought it was your ego."

Even Xander burst into giggles.

Jake placed a dramatic hand over his chest.

"I've been wounded."

"I don't see any blood," Aslam teased.

"Emotional wounds."

"They'll heal."

Watching them from the hallway, Ivy felt warmth spread through her chest.

For so long...

She had believed family was something she had lost forever.

Now it surrounded her.

Not perfect.

Not complete.

But real.

That afternoon, Elder Mira sent word requesting Ivy and Jake meet her in the old archives beneath the mansion.

Unlike the grand halls above, the underground library felt ancient.

Shelves carved directly into stone stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with scrolls, weathered journals, and books so old they seemed ready to crumble.

Candles flickered softly as Mira placed a worn wooden chest on a table.

"I've kept this hidden for many years," she said.

"It belonged to your parents."

Jake inhaled sharply.

Ivy hesitated before lifting the lid.

Inside lay three things.

A silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon.

A folded letter.

And an old leather journal.

The moment Ivy touched the pendant...

A strange warmth spread through her fingers.

The room blurred.

She was no longer in the archive.

She stood in a sunlit meadow.

Wildflowers stretched endlessly beneath a brilliant blue sky.

Laughter echoed nearby.

A little girl with long dark hair chased butterflies across the field.

Behind her...

A boy laughed as he tried to catch up.

"Ivora!"

The little girl turned.

"Jake!"

The siblings collided in a hug before collapsing into the grass together.

Then two adults approached.

A tall man with kind silver eyes.

A beautiful woman whose violet eyes matched Ivy's exactly.

Their parents.

Young.

Alive.

Happy.

Her mother smiled.

"You two promised not to wander too far."

"We didn't!" little Jake protested.

"The butterflies wandered."

Their father laughed.

"I suppose we'll have to arrest the butterflies then."

The children erupted into laughter.

Adult Ivy stood frozen.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

This...

This was the family she had forgotten.

Not blood.

Not violence.

Not screams.

Just...

Love.

The vision slowly began to fade.

But before everything disappeared...

Her mother looked directly at her.

Not at the child.

At the woman.

As though she could truly see her.

"My little star..."

Her voice echoed gently.

"If you've found this memory..."

"...it means you're finally ready to learn the truth."

Darkness swallowed the meadow.

Ivy gasped as she opened her eyes back in the archive.

She was crying.

Jake was kneeling beside her, worry written across his face.

"What happened?"

She looked at him through tear-filled eyes.

"I remembered them."

Jake's breath caught.

"Our parents."

"They were laughing."

"So were we."

For a long moment, neither sibling spoke.

Then Jake reached out and pulled her into a hug.

This time...

Neither of them cried because they were grieving.

They cried because, after twelve years, they had finally recovered something they thought was lost forever.

A memory.

A family.

A beginning.

Elder Mira quietly picked up the leather journal and placed it in Ivy's hands.

"I think," she said softly,

"your mother is ready to tell you the rest of the story."
