All color drained from Vergil's face.
He was still kneeling between Sapphire's and Sepphirothy's bodies, trying to comprehend what had just happened. His wife lay to his right, her eyes half-open and her blood spread across the stones. Sepphirothy remained in front of him, in the same position where he had left her a few seconds earlier.
Both were dead.
Sapphire, the woman who had remained by his side through so many hardships, was dead. Sepphirothy, his mother, who had done so much for him since entering his life, was also dead.
Vergil looked at his own hands.
Sapphire's blood was still between his fingers.
He tried to think of something he could do. A spell, an authority, any ability that might undo what had happened. But his thoughts couldn't keep up with what his eyes were seeing.
His body began swaying from side to side when he tried to stand.
