Chapter 5 - Chapter 2: Echoes of a Fallen Crown (Part 2)

The golden runes spread across the stone floor like streams of molten light.

One by one, they connected beneath the empty throne until the entire chamber glowed with an ancient brilliance. The air became warm, carrying the faint scent of rain and burning incense.

Kael instinctively took a step back.

"What exactly is this trial?"

Osric rested both hands on the top of his staff.

"If I tell you everything, then the trial loses its meaning."

Kael sighed.

"People in this world really enjoy speaking in riddles."

"They do."

"And one day," Osric replied with a faint smile, "you'll understand why."

The Weight of a Crown

Osric slowly walked toward the throne.

"There is something you must understand before you take another step."

"The Kingdom of Aetherion was not destroyed because it lacked powerful warriors."

"It was not destroyed because its magic was weaker."

He turned to face Kael.

"It fell because its people stopped trusting one another."

Kael remained silent.

"The Seven Royal Houses argued."

"The nobles became greedy."

"The generals served their own banners instead of the kingdom."

"The merchants manipulated food supplies during wartime."

"The Church demanded obedience instead of compassion."

"The enemy merely struck the final blow."

Kael frowned.

"So the kingdom rotted from within."

Osric nodded.

"Every empire that forgets its people eventually collapses."

His words lingered in the chamber.

Kael found himself thinking about the world he had left behind.

Different nations.

Different governments.

Yet the same mistakes repeated throughout history.

Perhaps worlds changed…

But people rarely did.

A King's Power

The Royal Covenant System appeared before Kael once more.

Unlike before, its words were accompanied by a faint golden seal bearing the crest of Aetherion.

Royal Covenant System

Core Principle Unlocked

A king does not gain strength by ruling.

He gains strength by being worthy of following.

Authority is the source of royal power.

Kael focused on the unfamiliar word.

"Authority?"

The system continued.

Authority is earned.

Protecting lives.

Keeping promises.

Inspiring loyalty.

Delivering justice.

Every action influences the Crown.

Another window appeared.

Royal Authority

Current Rank: Unknown

Authority: 0

Kingdom Owned: None

Citizens Under Protection: 0

Royal Knights: 0

Royal Court Members: 0

Kael stared at the numbers.

"…So I really have nothing."

"No kingdom."

"No army."

"No home."

Osric overheard him.

"And yet…"

"You still have hope."

The old keeper smiled.

"Many kings have possessed vast kingdoms."

"Few have possessed hope."

The Forgotten Names

Osric guided Kael around the circular chamber.

Along the walls stood dozens of weathered stone tablets.

Each bore a single name.

Some were accompanied by swords.

Others by books, shields, staffs or crowns of flowers.

Kael stopped before one inscription.

Commander Rowan Valen

"Who was he?"

Osric's eyes softened.

"He held the northern pass for six days."

"Against fifty thousand enemies."

"Only two hundred soldiers stood beside him."

"He knew reinforcements would never arrive."

"Yet none abandoned their post."

Kael swallowed.

"They all died?"

"They all chose to."

Osric moved to another tablet.

Lady Mirielle

"She was the Royal Treasurer."

"When famine struck during the war…"

"…she sold every jewel she owned to feed common citizens."

"She died with empty coffers."

"But no child in the capital starved that winter."

Kael continued walking.

Every stone carried another story.

A physician who remained behind to treat the wounded.

A teacher who protected orphaned children during the siege.

A stable boy who secretly carried messages through enemy lines.

None of them had statues in magnificent cities anymore.

Only these forgotten stones remained.

Kael knelt before them.

"They deserved better."

Osric looked at him quietly.

"They deserved to be remembered."

The Eyes in the Shadows

Far beyond the sanctuary…

Inside the highest tower of a fortress built from black stone…

A young woman stood before a circular pool of silver water.

Its surface rippled, revealing the image of Kael kneeling before the memorial stones.

She wore crimson armor beneath a dark cloak.

Her long scarlet hair fell to her waist, and a thin scar crossed one eyebrow—a reminder of battles long past.

This was the same mysterious woman who had watched Kael outside the shrine.

Behind her, an elderly knight entered the room.

"Your Highness."

She didn't turn.

"You've seen him."

"Yes."

"What do you think?"

The knight remained silent for several moments.

"He bowed."

She smiled faintly.

"Most who entered that sanctuary reached for the throne first."

"He knelt before the dead instead."

The old knight nodded.

"That alone makes him… different."

Her expression grew distant.

"Do not approach him yet."

"If he cannot survive the First Trial…"

"…he is not the king we've waited for."

The silver pool went still.

The Trial Begins

Back in the sanctuary, the golden runes beneath the throne blazed brighter than ever.

The stone floor trembled.

A deep, resonant horn echoed through the chamber, as if announcing the return of a forgotten monarch.

Osric stepped aside.

"I can guide you no further."

"The trial belongs to you alone."

Kael took a slow breath.

His heart pounded—not from fear alone, but from the growing realization that this journey was larger than reclaiming a throne.

It was about restoring the ideals that had been lost with it.

He looked toward the empty throne.

"I don't know if I'm worthy."

He admitted it aloud.

Osric smiled.

"The unworthy never ask that question."

With that, the old keeper struck the floor once with his staff.

The chamber was consumed by light.

When Kael opened his eyes again…

He was no longer inside the sanctuary.

He stood in the middle of a bustling city.

Children laughed as they ran through the streets.

Merchants shouted from colorful stalls.

Royal banners fluttered proudly above stone walls.

No ruins.

No dust.

No silence.

The Kingdom of Aetherion…

was alive.

A voice echoed around him.

"Your first trial is not to witness history…"

"…but to change it."

Kael's eyes widened.

"This isn't a memory…"

"No…"

A child suddenly grabbed his hand and looked up at him with frightened eyes.

"Mister!"

"Please!"

"The palace is burning!"

The sound of distant bells rang across the city.

Then came the screams.

The trial had begun.
