The silver ring felt warm against Kael's finger.
It wasn't burning.
It wasn't overflowing with magical energy.
It simply… felt alive.
Almost as if it recognized him.
Kael rubbed his thumb across the ancient crest engraved on its surface.
"So this is the first relic of Aetherion…"
"It is," Osric replied.
"But don't mistake simplicity for weakness."
He looked toward the ring with unmistakable respect.
"Many sought to steal it."
"None could even touch it."
Kael remembered the System's notification.
Effect: Hidden.
"So it's waiting."
Osric nodded.
"Just as the kingdom is waiting."
The Trial Isn't Over
Before Kael could ask another question, the city around them began to change.
The screams faded.
The fire slowed.
The soldiers froze in place.
Even the smoke rising from the burning orphanage stopped moving.
Everything became perfectly still.
Time itself had halted.
Only Kael and Osric could move.
"The trial…" Kael whispered.
"It isn't over."
"No."
Osric's gaze swept across the silent capital.
"You've passed the Trial of Compassion."
"But compassion alone cannot rebuild a kingdom."
Kael frowned.
"There's another test?"
"There has always been another."
"The First Throne judges three virtues."
"Compassion."
"Courage."
"And Judgment."
Kael looked at the frozen people below.
"The first tested my heart."
"The second?"
Osric's expression became grave.
"The second will test your mind."
A King's Burden
Osric raised his staff.
The frozen city dissolved into particles of golden light.
When the light faded, Kael found himself standing inside the Royal War Chamber.
It was enormous.
Maps covered an oval table carved from white stone.
Tiny crystal figures representing armies moved across its surface.
Some bore Aetherion's golden lion.
Others carried the banners of enemy kingdoms.
A dozen military commanders stood around the table.
They looked exhausted.
Their armor was stained with blood.
Bandages wrapped their arms and shoulders.
One commander slammed his fist onto the table.
"We cannot defend all five gates!"
Another shook his head.
"If we abandon the western districts, thousands will die."
"The eastern walls are already weakening."
"If the palace falls, the kingdom falls with it."
Arguments erupted across the room.
No one noticed Kael.
No one noticed Osric.
"They can't see us?" Kael asked.
"No."
Osric answered quietly.
"You are observing history."
At the head of the table sat a man wearing a golden crown.
His face was hidden in shadow, but his posture radiated quiet authority.
The King of Aetherion.
Kael instinctively held his breath.
The king listened to every argument without interruption.
When the room finally fell silent, he stood.
No dramatic speech.
No shouting.
Just one question.
"How much food remains?"
The commanders exchanged confused glances.
One answered.
"If we ration carefully…"
"…perhaps twelve days."
The king nodded.
"And medicine?"
"Running low."
"The healers estimate six days."
The king looked at the map.
"Then the answer is obvious."
One general frowned.
"Your Majesty?"
"We evacuate the civilians tonight."
Silence.
Another commander protested.
"The enemy will think we're retreating!"
"They already think we've lost."
The king's voice remained calm.
"I did not ask how history would judge me."
"I asked how many children would survive the winter."
Kael felt something stir within him.
This…
This was leadership.
Not chasing glory.
Not protecting pride.
Protecting people.
A Different Kind of Victory
Osric folded his arms.
"Do you know what happened next?"
Kael shook his head.
"The evacuation succeeded."
"Tens of thousands escaped through hidden mountain roads."
He paused.
"The capital still fell."
Kael looked toward the king.
"So…"
"He lost the battle."
Osric smiled faintly.
"But he saved the kingdom."
Kael frowned.
"I don't understand."
"The city was never Aetherion."
Osric tapped his chest.
"The people were."
Those words settled into Kael's heart.
On Earth, he had always imagined kingdoms as castles, armies and borders.
Now he understood.
Without its people…
A kingdom was nothing more than empty stone.
The Shadow at the Door
As the war council continued, Kael noticed something strange.
Near the entrance stood a young palace attendant carrying a tray of documents.
He looked ordinary.
Forgettable.
Yet unlike everyone else in the room…
He wasn't frozen by history.
His eyes met Kael's.
The attendant smiled.
A slow…
Knowing…
Smile.
Kael's pulse quickened.
"He can see me."
Osric immediately turned.
His face drained of color.
"No…"
The attendant calmly placed the tray on a nearby table.
Then he bowed politely.
"My apologies."
"It seems the trial has noticed an unexpected guest."
His voice was smooth.
Cultured.
Far older than his youthful appearance suggested.
Kael took a cautious step forward.
"Who are you?"
The young man tilted his head.
"That question…"
"…is more dangerous than you realize."
Without warning, the entire war chamber shook violently.
The crystal map shattered.
The commanders vanished like mist.
Osric stepped in front of Kael.
"Leave."
"Now."
The attendant sighed.
"I was hoping to wait a little longer before introducing myself."
His golden eyes darkened to crimson.
"But I suppose…"
"…fate has grown impatient."
A suffocating pressure filled the room.
For the first time since entering the trial…
Osric looked afraid.
Very afraid.
