Silence settled over the ruined vision.
The battlefield had vanished.
The palace walls were gone.
Only Kael and Osric remained, standing upon a vast white plain that stretched endlessly in every direction. There was no sky above them, only a ceiling of drifting golden light.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Kael was the first to break the silence.
"That man…"
"He wasn't trying to kill me."
Osric nodded.
"No."
"He had several opportunities."
"So why didn't he?"
The old Keeper closed his eyes.
"Because some enemies believe an idea is more dangerous than a sword."
"He wanted to plant doubt."
Kael replayed the conversation in his mind.
The questions.
The calm voice.
The challenge.
Not once had the stranger threatened him.
Instead…
He had forced Kael to question himself.
Osric's words interrupted his thoughts.
"Never underestimate an enemy who prefers conversations over battles."
"They're usually the ones who have already won countless wars."
The Third Virtue
A bell rang in the distance.
Its sound was clear and deep, echoing across the endless white plain.
The Royal Covenant System appeared before Kael.
First Throne Trial
✔ Compassion
✔ Courage
Final Trial: Judgment
Objective:
Judge without certainty.
Kael frowned.
"Judge… without certainty?"
Osric gave no explanation.
Instead, he stepped backward.
"I'm afraid this is where I leave you."
Before Kael could respond, the old Keeper faded into particles of golden light.
"Osric!"
His voice echoed into emptiness.
There was no answer.
He was alone again.
The Court of the First King
The white plain trembled.
From beneath it, marble pillars slowly rose toward the heavens.
One after another.
Then walls.
Then towering stained-glass windows.
Then a magnificent throne room unlike anything Kael had ever imagined.
The ceiling disappeared into clouds.
Golden banners bearing the Lion of Aetherion hung from enormous columns.
Rows of nobles filled the chamber.
Knights stood silently along the walls.
At the far end rested the Royal Throne.
Empty.
Kael stood at its center.
No one acknowledged him.
It was as though he were invisible.
Suddenly, two Royal Guards entered through enormous bronze doors.
Between them walked a young man in chains.
He couldn't have been older than twenty.
His clothes were torn.
His face was bruised.
Yet he held his head high.
The herald's voice thundered across the hall.
"Bring forth Captain Lucien Ashford."
"The man accused of treason against the Crown."
Whispers erupted throughout the court.
"Treason…"
"He sold military secrets."
"He should be executed."
Kael watched silently.
Another figure entered.
A woman wearing the robes of the Royal Judge.
She carried a sealed scroll.
"Your Majesty," she announced to the empty throne.
"The evidence has been presented."
"The prisoner admits to meeting with enemy envoys."
"He refuses to explain his actions."
Kael frowned.
"If the throne is empty…"
"Who is judging him?"
The answer came immediately.
A voice echoed through the chamber.
"You are."
Kael's heart skipped.
The Royal Covenant System appeared.
Final Trial
You are acting as the Crown.
Review the evidence.
Pass judgment.
Your decision cannot be changed.
Before him, three glowing memories appeared like floating crystals.
"Evidence?"
Kael reached toward the first.
The First Memory
Captain Lucien stood inside a military tent.
Across from him sat an enemy commander.
They exchanged a sealed document.
The image froze.
Kael frowned.
"That doesn't look good."
He reached toward the second memory.
The Second Memory
Lucien secretly entered an orphanage late at night.
Instead of hiding weapons…
He left bags of grain and medicine.
Children smiled as the matron thanked him.
Then he quietly disappeared before sunrise.
Kael blinked.
"Why would a traitor do that?"
The third memory appeared.
The Third Memory
Lucien knelt before a gravely wounded soldier.
The dying man grabbed his wrist.
"Promise me…"
"…don't let the children starve."
Lucien nodded.
"I swear."
The vision faded.
Kael looked around the silent courtroom.
"That's all?"
No explanation.
No confession.
No final answer.
Only fragments.
The nobles began shouting.
"He betrayed the kingdom!"
"He met the enemy!"
"He deserves death!"
Others argued back.
"He saved civilians!"
"There's more to this story!"
The courtroom descended into chaos.
Kael closed his eyes.
The System had warned him.
Judge without certainty.
No matter what he decided…
There would always be doubt.
He opened his eyes and looked toward the chained captain.
Lucien met his gaze calmly.
No fear.
No pleading.
Only acceptance.
Kael suddenly understood something.
Being king wasn't only about making impossible choices.
Sometimes…
It meant carrying responsibility even when the truth was incomplete.
And whatever decision he made next…
Would determine whether the First Throne truly accepted him.
