Chapter 4 - Chapter 2: Echoes of a Fallen Crown

The first thing Kael noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful silence of the forest he had walked through earlier with Elara, but a silence so complete that even his own breathing sounded out of place.

The ancient shrine stood behind him, its stone entrance sealed shut as though it had never opened. Moss-covered pillars surrounded the clearing, and moonlight poured through the broken roof, illuminating dust that drifted lazily through the air.

Kael stared at the stone door.

"I definitely walked inside…"

He placed both hands against it and pushed.

Nothing.

He tried again with more force.

The door remained unmoved.

"So… I'm trapped."

A soft chime echoed inside his mind.

Royal Covenant System

Location: First Royal Sanctuary

Status: Trial has not yet begun.

Recommendation: Remain calm.

Kael let out a dry laugh.

"Remain calm? That's easy for a magical window to say."

No answer came.

The System had spoken only when necessary since he arrived in this world. Unlike the game systems he remembered from novels on Earth, it wasn't chatty or eager to explain everything.

That made him uneasy.

He was alone.

Truly alone.

For the first time since his reincarnation, the excitement began to fade, replaced by a quiet ache in his chest.

He sat on one of the worn stone steps and looked up at the patch of moonlit sky above.

"I really can't go back, can I?"

Memories surfaced without warning.

His cramped apartment.

The old kettle that whistled every morning.

The noisy bus ride to work.

His phone filled with unread messages he always planned to answer "later."

His life hadn't been extraordinary.

But it had been his.

He closed his eyes.

"I didn't even get to say goodbye."

The words disappeared into the darkness.

No one answered.

A Kingdom That Refuses to Die

Several minutes passed before the silence was broken.

Not by footsteps.

By voices.

Faint.

Almost like whispers carried by the wind.

Kael stood immediately.

"Who's there?"

The whispers grew louder.

Not one voice.

Hundreds.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Soldiers shouting battle cries.

Blacksmiths hammering steel.

Merchants haggling in crowded markets.

Laughter.

Music.

Then…

Screams.

The joyful sounds twisted into chaos.

Flames.

Explosions.

The clash of steel.

Someone cried,

"Protect the King!"

Another voice shouted,

"The western gate has fallen!"

A child sobbed for her mother.

Kael covered his ears.

"What is this?"

The entire sanctuary trembled.

Blue flames ignited in ancient braziers lining the walls.

One after another.

Until the chamber was filled with ghostly light.

The whispers stopped.

A single sentence echoed through the hall.

"Remember us."

Goosebumps spread across Kael's arms.

He wasn't simply standing inside an old ruin.

He was standing inside the memories of a dead kingdom.

The Keeper

At the far end of the chamber, a figure emerged from the shadows.

An old man.

His silver beard reached his waist, and he leaned heavily on a staff carved from black crystal. His robes were faded, patched in places, yet they carried the unmistakable dignity of someone who had once stood in royal halls.

Kael instinctively tensed.

The old man studied him in silence.

Then, to Kael's surprise, he bowed.

Not deeply.

Just enough to show respect.

"It has been… a very long time, Your Majesty."

Kael immediately shook his head.

"I'm not a king."

"You carry the Crown's mark."

"I haven't earned that title."

The old man looked at him for a long moment.

Then a faint smile touched his weathered face.

"That answer alone tells me you may yet deserve it."

Kael frowned.

"Who are you?"

"I am Osric."

"The last Keeper of the First Royal Sanctuary."

"I have guarded this place for four hundred and eighty-three years."

Kael blinked.

"…That's impossible."

Osric chuckled.

"In most worlds, yes."

"In this one, magic has a habit of arguing with common sense."

Instead of asking another question, Kael looked around the empty hall.

"If you've been here for nearly five centuries…"

"Were you alone?"

Osric's eyes drifted toward the empty throne at the center of the chamber.

"For the last three hundred years…"

"…yes."

The answer carried a loneliness that needed no further explanation.

Kael felt something tighten in his chest.

Five centuries.

Watching over a kingdom that no longer existed.

Waiting for someone who might never come.

He suddenly understood why the sanctuary had whispered,

Remember us.

Osric turned toward the throne.

"You have come seeking power."

Kael hesitated before answering.

"I came seeking answers."

The old keeper nodded.

"A better answer than most."

"But know this, Kael."

"The throne does not make kings."

"It merely reveals the man who sits upon it."

The old man raised his staff.

The floor beneath the throne began to glow with intricate golden runes.

The air grew heavier.

"The First Trial…"

"…is about to begin.
