'Ding! The time is now 7:30 A.M'
"Ugh.." A man sleepily opened his eyes as he forced himself out of bed. He was not a morning person and could never understand how his coworkers were so active in the morning. The man dragged himself downstairs and brewed himself a cup of coffee.
"Ahh, much better, I dont know how anyone survives without a cup of coffee in the morning"
The man walked back upstairs and started to get prepared for work. He put on his researches uniform which was just a white lab-coat and a simple pair of long pants. The man then looked at himself in the mirror admiring his appearance.
His name was Arthur. He was a tall man about 5'9" with brown hair and brown eyes, nothing too exceptional, he was lean and skinny and had bags under his eyes from the many all-nighters he pulled at the lab where he worked as a physicist. He was working on a project that would change the world and was so close to finishing so he couldn't let a pesky thing like sleep get in his way.
He was from an average family and spent many years in college to get his doctorate in physics, in the process accruing massive student loan debts, but it was worth it in the end as it allowed him to pursue his dream career.
'Ding! The time is now 8:00 A.M'
"Crap I gotta get going or I'll be chewed out again by the project leader"
The man quickly grabbed his work related files and rushed out of his apartment as fast as he could. He hopped in a cab and started heading to the lab. His lab was apart of lockheed's skunkworks division and they were working on a new faster than light device that would revolutionize the way people think of space travel.
The cab dropped him off in front off the side entrance to the skunkworks building where his lab was located. The building looked like any other engineering facility, pretty much just a big ugly cube with industrial parts decorating the outer walls. Once you got past that though the inside was a very clean and proper facility with checkpoints to enter and exit and tons of cameras. There were cameras everywhere because skunkwork's main job was making planes for the military. He proceeded to walk to the checkpoint where there were some guards stationed.
Arthur gave his security card to the guard, the guard looked at it then scanned the RFID chip in it and allowed him to pass. He then proceeded through the hallways completely devoid of color to another locked door where he scanned his card again. The door opened and he entered into a large room with a device in the middle. This device was the faster than light engine, it used the concept of negative mass to bend space around it and ride space almost like a wave. This allows the device to go faster than light because technically the ship wouldn't be moving it was just space that was moving.
Arthur was really excited for this day because it was the first time they were going to do an actual test. Arthur as a physicist had done all the theory of the device and even helped design it so to him this test was like seeing his child walk their first steps.
He made his way up to the control center where he met his project leader and coworkers. His boss was a grouchy old man who would chew you out for being the slightest bit late. His 2 coworkers Erick and Gavin were nice people though, Erick was a person a bit on the eccentric side while Gavin was a chill person.
"Hey guys, are you just as excited as I am for this test?"
"Yeah" replied Erick "This project is going to bring us to a new era, how can I not be excited."
"Yeah I guess that's true, how about you Gavin?"
"I'm just as excited as Erick, I mean we have been working on this for years and were finally starting the thing up"
"Well, If you both are just as excited as I am for this we better get to starting the thing up."
"Wait" The project leader said getting our attention. "Since today is our first test the building supervisor would like to be present."
"That's surprising, the supervisor never showed interested in our project so its strange for him to start showing interest now." Just as Arthur finished saying that the supervisor walked through the sealed door keeping the contents of the lab secure. He was a normal sized man with short black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a black suit and had his badge labeled supervisor on. I have met him a few times here and there while walking the hallways but he seemed different today. He was I dont know how to say... scarier?
I took my mind of the supervisor for now though and started working on going through the start up procedures required for the start of the faster than light engine.
"Negative matter reaction check"
"Space around device stable"
"Cooling is stable"
"All start up procedures finished and ready for start up"
"Ok, perfect" said the project leader "Activate the faster than light device"
When he said that Arthur pressed the button to activate the device
"Device starting up"
"Energy levels nominal"
"Matter-Space reaction stable"
"Device active and running stable"
"WE DID IT!" Arthur yelled visibly happy
"WOOHOO!" Erick screamed joining in Arthur's excitement
"I cant believe we did it" Gavin said happily
'Warning, Negative Matter containment field losing strength'
"WHAT!" Arthur yelled "Hurry and give the containment field more power!"
"On it!" Gavin replied
This was bad, VERY bad, if the containment field dropped and the negative matter was allowed to react with more space it could have cataclysmic effects.
Arthur and his coworkers fed the containment field as much energy as possible but the containments strength kept dropping. This made absolutely no sense, it was almost like the energy was being drained from the field but that was impossible as negative matter doesn't have an effect like that. Arthur looked around him to see if anything else was causing the effect and that's when he saw the supervisor. He had a creepy smile on his face, how could he be smiling in an incident like this. Arthur didn't have the time to continue thinking about the supervisors creepy actions and instead put all his brain power back to finding a solution to his problem but that's when the worst happened.
'Warning, containment field failure in 5 seconds'
'5...4...3...2...1...'
'Containment field has failed'
Once the containment field failed the negative matter ripped a hole through space leading into a dark void. Arthur was forcibly sucked into this hole in space as its gravitational effects were monstrous.
"Where am I" Arthur said as the only thing he could see was darkness
"The void between dimensions" a mysterious yet sinister voice replied whispering in Arthurs ear
"What!? Who are you!?" Arthur said shocked by the voice
"Who am I? That's a good question but for now lets say I am an omnipotent being" The voice said with a laugh
'omnipotent being, yeah right, must be a drunken hobo' Arthur thought 'but where am I? did I go blind from the accident and why cant I feel anything'
"DRUNKEN HOBO!?!?" the voice laughed hysterically
'Did he just read my mind?'
"Yes, I did" the voice responded with another laugh, he was enjoying seeing how shocked the mortal in front of him was.
Arthur on the other hand was terrified, if the man in front of him could read his thoughts then maybe what he said about him being omnipotent was true and if that's the case he just insulted this omnipotent person but there was nothing he could do about that now so he just had to remain calm and try to stay on this persons good side.
"Did you bring me here?" Arthur asked
"I did not" said the voice "You came here on your own through that engine thing of yours, well not all of you, only your soul" The voice erupted into laughter again.
"J-Just my soul?"
"Yes only your soul is intact, you have no body anymore"
This greatly shocked Arthur, only his soul survived being pulled into the space rift!?
"How about I help you." The voice said sinisterly
"W-What kind of help" Arthur said still terrified of this supposed omnipotent being
"How about I give you a new body on a new world."
"Whats the catch?"
"Why would you think there would be a catch to my help?"
"There's always a catch, nothing comes for free."
"AHAHAHAHAHAHA" The voice erupted into laughter again
"Your right nothing is free, the catch is only something you will find out when you get your new body."
Arthur thought about the "help" this omnipotent being would give him and decided to accept it. What else was he going to do, sit around in this void for all of eternity? That didn't sound too pleasant to him.
"I accept your offer."
"Good, Good, if you didn't accept I would have evaporated your soul. Goodbye!" The voice said laughing again
"What!? You would have wha...."
