Chapter 18 - The World Raider Chapter 18: The Oath Crucible

"You may come out now," Halvek says.

The black crowns burned into the soldiers' foreheads begin glowing.

"World Raider."

I remain beneath the sacks of grain.

The compartment is dark, cramped, and filled with enough dust to make breathing irritating.

More importantly, Aldric's concealment seals are still active.

Halvek may know I am here, but that does not mean he can sense exactly where I am.

I keep one hand near the blue ring around my wrist.

Outside, Elara speaks.

"You were expecting us."

Commander Halvek laughs quietly.

"I was expecting an attempt. I admit the supply wagons were a pleasant touch."

The wood above me creaks as soldiers surround the wagon.

Their footsteps land at the same time.

Perfectly synchronized.

No whispers.

No nervous breathing.

Not even the sound of armor shifting unnecessarily.

These men are not simply obeying orders.

Something has taken control of every movement they make.

Malrec's voice cuts across the courtyard.

"What did you do to the garrison?"

"I perfected it."

"Perfected what?"

"Loyalty."

A heavy object strikes the side of my wagon.

The compartment shakes.

"Your former soldiers resisted Prince Lucien because their seals allowed them to think," Halvek continues. "Fear, doubt, loyalty to dead kings—such things create hesitation."

Elara's voice becomes colder.

"So you removed their minds."

"I removed the parts that interfere with duty."

The black crowns pulse again.

A faint pressure reaches me through Aldric's seals.

Not fear.

Emptiness.

The same absence I sensed in the corruption beneath the royal palace.

Halvek did not erase their emotions.

He connected them to something that consumes emotions before they can surface.

The Flame Beyond.

Or the entity behind Lucien.

Perhaps they are the same.

Perhaps this world has more than one thing waiting outside it.

Neither possibility is good.

A soldier pulls away one of the grain sacks above me.

Light enters through a narrow crack.

I see part of the courtyard.

Rows of soldiers stand around the wagons, all facing Elara.

Blackridge is larger than it appeared on the map.

Stone walls rise on every side, reinforced by glowing golden symbols. The communication tower dominates the center of the fortress.

It is not merely a tower.

Golden chains run from its upper levels into every wall, gate, and soldier.

The entire fortress is part of the Oath Crucible.

Commander Halvek stands near Elara's wagon.

He is a thin man with dark red armor and closely cropped hair. Unlike his soldiers, the black crown on his forehead is made from metal.

Five narrow points have been driven directly into his skull.

Golden chains extend from the crown and disappear beneath his armor.

He smiles constantly.

Not because he is amused.

Because something has damaged the muscles in his face.

Beside him stands a woman in white armor.

Lady Seraphine.

The Ivory Judge holds her pale sword in one hand.

She looks directly toward my hiding place.

She knows where I am.

She says nothing.

The soldier removes another grain sack.

Halvek looks toward Elara.

"You arrived wearing restraints."

"They were part of the disguise."

"I know."

His eyes move toward Malrec.

"You arrived carrying a broken Royal Blade."

Malrec stands beside the first wagon with his wrists tied.

The restraints are false, but the soldiers do not know that.

Soren remains near him, still pretending to be the officer who captured him.

Halvek slowly walks around them.

"And Commander Soren returned after abandoning his post."

"I did not abandon it," Soren says. "The obedience seals were compromised."

"Compromised?"

Halvek's smile stretches wider.

"Your men were given freedom, and most of them immediately chose treason."

"They chose not to murder civilians."

"They chose weakness."

Halvek raises one hand.

Every soldier in the courtyard draws a weapon.

The sound occurs as one movement.

Elara does not step back.

"You intend to kill us?"

"No. Prince Lucien wants you alive."

"And the others?"

Halvek looks toward Malrec.

"The former Royal Blade will be returned to the capital."

Then Soren.

"The deserter will be made useful."

Finally, he looks toward my wagon again.

"The World Raider will be opened."

I do not like the sound of that.

Elara's silver mana gathers around her hands.

Halvek notices.

"Do not."

The communication tower flashes.

A golden symbol appears beneath Elara's feet.

Chains rise from the stone and wrap around her ankles.

She tries to pull away.

The chains tighten.

Malrec breaks his false restraints.

Nightfall leaves its sheath.

He cuts toward Halvek.

Seraphine steps between them.

Her white sword blocks the damaged black blade.

The impact sends a sharp ring through the courtyard.

Malrec stares at her.

"You warned us."

"I warned you about the crucible."

"You are protecting him."

"I am preventing you from attacking a recognized commander before judgment."

"He turned two hundred soldiers into puppets."

Seraphine's expression remains calm.

"I know."

"And you still stand in my way?"

"My oath requires proof that his actions threaten Asteria more than they preserve it."

Malrec looks around the courtyard.

"What more do you need?"

"The crucible has not been activated."

Halvek laughs.

"You see? Even the Ivory Judge understands."

Seraphine's gray eyes move toward him.

"I understand nothing about you."

His smile does not change.

"You will."

A soldier tears away the final sack above me.

I break the blue ring.

Aldric's concealment seals collapse.

Fear Sense returns all at once.

The fortress floods into my awareness.

Two hundred soldiers.

Beneath their emptiness, the fear is still there.

Buried.

Compressed into the crucible.

Every soldier is terrified.

They simply cannot feel it themselves.

The communication tower is holding their emotions inside its foundation.

The fear circles beneath us like a trapped ocean.

My Mark opens.

The system reacts.

Massive contained Dread source detected.

Source belongs to unwilling subjects.

Warden's Claim unavailable outside allied territory.

Dread Refuge connection detected: Elara Selene Asteria.

Elara's fear reaches me through our bond.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for the soldiers.

Halvek turns toward the open compartment.

"There you are."

I rise from beneath the grain.

Several crossbows immediately point toward me.

"I preferred the dramatic entrance I had planned."

"You are surrounded."

"That happens often."

I jump from the wagon.

The moment my boots touch the courtyard, golden symbols appear beneath them.

The Oath Crucible examines me.

Chains rise from the ground.

I summon Oathbreaker before they reach my legs.

Black smoke erupts from my palm.

The named scythe forms with a deep metallic sound.

The soldiers hesitate.

Only slightly.

Enough for their buried fear to pulse inside the tower.

Halvek watches the weapon.

"Beautiful."

"People keep saying that right before trying to destroy it."

"I do not want to destroy it."

His metal crown glows.

"I want to understand what happens when it is attached to the crucible."

"That is not happening."

"You misunderstand."

Halvek spreads his arms.

Golden chains emerge from the tower and move across the courtyard.

They do not approach me.

They connect to the soldiers.

Every black crown shines.

The soldiers raise their weapons again.

"You have already joined."

I feel the connection close around Oathbreaker.

A golden line appears along the weapon's handle.

Pain travels through my arm.

Hostile oath connection detected.

Soul weapon is being incorporated into foreign authority.

I immediately activate Dread Severance.

Purple light moves along Oathbreaker's smaller edge.

I cut through the golden line.

It breaks.

The line reforms.

I cut again.

Two replace it.

Halvek's smile widens.

"The crucible learns."

"That makes it more irritating."

"It was created to bind things far more powerful than soldiers."

Elara looks toward the tower.

"My father."

Halvek turns toward her.

The chains around her ankles climb higher.

"King Edric was difficult at first."

The courtyard becomes silent.

Even Malrec stops pushing against Seraphine's sword.

Elara's voice shakes.

"You have him here."

"Part of him."

"What does that mean?"

"The king was connected to every royal seal in Asteria. Moving his entire body would have been unnecessary."

Halvek taps the metal crown embedded in his forehead.

"We only needed the part that gave orders."

Elara's silver mana explodes.

The chains around her turn white.

Halvek raises one finger.

The tower answers.

Golden energy strikes her from above.

She falls to one knee.

Pain enters our Warden bond.

Dread Refuge activates.

Part of the supernatural burden moves from her body into mine.

Golden lines burn across my chest.

I nearly drop Oathbreaker.

Dread Refuge activated.

Burden absorbed: Royal suppression authority.

Elara looks toward me.

"Shin?"

"I'm fine."

"You're glowing."

"That is normally a bad sign."

Halvek studies the lines across my body.

"You took her punishment."

"I'm her Warden."

His smile becomes almost genuine.

"A title created by the Mark. I wondered whether the reports were true."

"You know about Dread Wardens?"

"No."

He looks toward Seraphine.

"But the throne recognized the possibility when you evolved."

Seraphine's expression changes.

Only slightly.

She did not know that.

Halvek continues.

"The royal network observes every power connected to fear, oath, or authority inside Asteria."

I look toward the communication tower.

"That is how you entered my dream."

"No."

Halvek gestures toward Seraphine.

"She did that."

The Ivory Judge does not deny it.

"But I used the connection she created to examine what answered."

The metal crown burns brighter.

"I saw the boundary around Wren's Hollow. I saw the fear refusing to enter your soul."

His voice becomes excited.

"You altered the purpose of a World Raider."

"That seems to offend a lot of people."

"It interests me."

Halvek steps closer.

"The crucible can do the same thing on a greater scale."

I feel the buried fear beneath the fortress.

"You want to turn the soldiers' fear into power."

"It already is power."

"You removed their ability to choose."

"I removed the waste between command and action."

Soren steps forward.

"These are my soldiers."

"Some of them were."

Halvek points toward a line near the eastern wall.

I recognize several men who escaped Wren's Hollow before Soren's battalion broke from Lucien.

Their faces are empty now.

Black crowns cover their foreheads.

Soren's fear becomes anger.

"What did you do to them?"

"I corrected their disobedience."

Soren reaches for his sword.

Every soldier in the courtyard points a weapon toward him.

Halvek smiles.

"Order them to lower their weapons."

Soren stares at the men.

"Stand down."

None respond.

"They cannot hear you," Halvek says.

"They hear only the crucible."

Elara forces herself upright.

"Then I order them to stand down."

Silver authority moves through her voice.

The soldiers' black crowns flicker.

For one second, several weapons lower.

The tower flashes.

Golden chains tighten around every soldier.

Their bodies straighten.

Blood runs from some of their noses.

Halvek looks toward Elara with interest.

"The inheritance still prefers you."

"Release them."

"No."

"You serve the royal authority."

"I serve certainty."

His crown pulses.

"Kings change. Heirs rebel. Armies hesitate. The crucible does not."

Seraphine's sword begins glowing.

The judgment thread around Halvek becomes visible.

She is asking him something silently.

The blade remains white.

Halvek believes every word.

Seraphine looks toward Elara.

"He does not consider himself disloyal."

"That doesn't make him innocent," Elara says.

"No."

"Then judge him."

"I cannot judge belief alone."

"What about action?"

Seraphine's eyes move toward the soldiers.

"Activate the crucible," she tells Halvek.

Everyone looks at her.

Malrec's expression becomes dangerous.

"What are you doing?"

Seraphine does not look away from Halvek.

"You claim the crucible preserves Asteria. Activate it."

Halvek's smile remains fixed.

"That would destroy the fortress."

"It would fulfill Prince Lucien's command if control were lost."

"Control has not been lost."

"Then prove the system is stable."

Halvek understands the trap.

If he activates the crucible while the fortress remains under his control, he becomes the direct threat Seraphine's oath requires.

If he refuses, he admits the sacrifice is not necessary.

The Ivory Judge cannot act based on what he plans to do.

She can force him to reveal the plan.

Halvek looks toward the communication tower.

The buried fear beneath us stirs.

"You believe your judgment protects you," he says.

Seraphine raises her pale sword.

"It protects Asteria."

"No."

The black crown on his forehead opens.

The five metal points pull away from his skin.

Something red moves beneath them.

"It protects the throne's old rules."

The golden chains across the fortress turn black.

Seraphine's white armor flashes.

A symbol appears over her heart.

Her oath.

Halvek lifts one hand.

"I am the crucible's recognized keeper."

The black chains strike Seraphine.

She blocks the first with her sword.

The second wraps around her arm.

The third pierces her side.

Her projection in Wren's Hollow had only been a fraction of her power.

Her real body still bleeds.

Malrec catches her before she falls.

"You knew it would attack you."

"I suspected."

"That is becoming another useless distinction."

Halvek closes his fist.

Seraphine's oath symbol begins burning black.

"The crucible does not need to wait for judgment," he says. "It can rewrite the judge."

Seraphine's fear appears.

Not fear of death.

Fear of becoming another weapon.

The Mark responds.

I step toward her.

Golden chains strike the ground between us.

Dozens rise around my body.

I use Dread Step.

Compressed fear explodes beneath my feet.

I appear beside Seraphine.

The movement sends pain through my injured legs, but the evolution keeps them from tearing completely.

I place my marked hand against the black chain connected to her oath.

The bond is complicated.

It is not forced.

Seraphine chose the original oath.

Halvek is using the crucible to rewrite its meaning.

Cutting the entire bond would free her.

It would also destroy something she built her identity around.

She already refused that.

I search deeper.

The original oath is white.

The corruption is black.

Two connections occupying the same path.

I hook Oathbreaker's smaller blade between them.

"Dread Severance."

Purple light enters the bond.

Halvek's crown reacts.

The crucible pushes back.

Pain runs from the scythe into my Mark.

The black connection attempts to spread into me again.

Seraphine looks at my hand.

"Do not cut the oath."

"I'm cutting what attached itself to it."

"You may not understand the difference."

"I understand enough."

"Not good enough."

"That seems to be everyone's opinion."

I pull.

The black corruption separates from the white oath.

Halvek raises both hands.

Every soldier attacks.

Crossbow bolts fill the courtyard.

Malrec moves in front of Seraphine.

Nightfall cuts through several bolts.

Elara creates a silver barrier.

Others strike it.

Cracks spread across the surface.

Soren and his men draw weapons, but they are surrounded ten to one.

A deep explosion shakes the northern wall.

Dalia.

The Greybank miners have entered the drainage channel.

Halvek glances toward the tower.

That moment of distraction weakens the crucible.

I pull harder.

The black bond tears free from Seraphine's oath.

Oathbreaker cuts through it.

The corruption disappears.

Seraphine gasps.

Her white sword shines brighter than before.

Dread Severance proficiency increased.

Voluntary bond preserved.

Hostile reinterpretation removed.

The Ivory Judge looks toward her blade.

Then toward Halvek.

The sword becomes transparent.

Two scales of light appear above the courtyard.

Halvek's actions gather on one side.

The soldiers.

The black crowns.

The threat against the fortress.

The attack on Seraphine's oath.

The other side remains empty.

Her judgment is complete.

"Commander Halvek," she says.

His smile finally disappears.

"You have used royal authority to enslave Asterian soldiers, corrupted a Royal Blade's oath, and placed the fortress beneath an external power."

Halvek takes one step back.

Seraphine raises her sword.

"I judge you a direct threat to Asteria."

The soldiers move between them.

Two hundred bodies form a wall.

Seraphine's blade stops.

She can kill Halvek.

Reaching him means cutting through the people he controls.

He knows it.

His smile returns.

"You may judge me."

The communication tower pulses.

"But they will carry out the sentence."

The soldiers charge.

Elara's barrier collapses.

The courtyard becomes chaos.

Malrec meets the first group head-on.

The remains of Nightfall cut through swords and shields without touching the soldiers beneath them.

Soren shouts names as men he once commanded attack him.

Some hesitate.

Most cannot.

I release Dread Aura.

The soldiers do not react.

Their fear is trapped beneath the tower.

The aura touches only empty bodies.

Halvek laughs.

"Your greatest weapon is useless."

"Not completely."

I feel the fear beneath the fortress.

It belongs to the soldiers.

The crucible stole it.

But Elara's authority briefly reached them before the tower suppressed her.

Some part of them recognizes her claim.

Some part of them wants the chains broken.

Warden's Claim does not extend here.

Not yet.

But the system recognized Elara as an allied ruler.

The soldiers do not need to accept me.

They need to accept her.

"Elara!"

She blocks a sword with a silver blade.

"What?"

"Claim the fortress."

She stares at me.

"We don't control it."

"Neither does Halvek."

The black chains running through the walls pulse.

The fortress is contested.

Authority is divided.

Lucien's seal controls the crucible.

Halvek controls the soldiers.

Seraphine has judged the commander a threat.

Elara has the inheritance network's stronger claim.

She understands.

Elara raises both hands.

Silver light erupts from her body.

"My name is Elara Selene Asteria!"

Her voice travels through every golden chain in the fortress.

The soldiers freeze for half a second.

The black crowns flicker.

Halvek turns toward her.

"Silence her!"

The soldiers nearest Elara attack.

Malrec moves between them.

Seraphine joins him.

White and black blades defend the princess from both sides.

Elara continues.

"I challenge the authority controlling Blackridge Fortress."

The communication tower answers.

Black light rises above it.

Lucien's voice enters the courtyard.

"Rejected."

Golden chains tighten around Elara.

Dread Refuge pulls part of the burden into me again.

The pain nearly forces me to my knees.

I remain standing.

Elara looks toward the soldiers.

"You were ordered to die if this fortress fell."

The black crowns pulse violently.

Blood runs from beneath several of them.

Halvek raises one hand.

"Do not listen."

"They planned to burn your oaths and send what remained of you to the capital."

The soldiers cannot react.

But their trapped fear beneath the fortress becomes stronger.

"They removed your ability to choose because they knew what you would choose."

One soldier near Soren begins shaking.

His sword lowers by an inch.

Halvek notices.

The metal crown opens wider.

Black roots spread beneath his skin.

"Activate partial crucible."

The tower releases a deep sound.

The trapped fear beneath the courtyard ignites.

Soldiers begin screaming.

Not with their mouths.

Inside my Mark.

Two hundred silent voices cry out at once.

Golden fire runs through the chains connected to their hearts.

Seraphine turns toward Halvek.

"You have activated the sacrifice."

"Only enough to restore control."

Her sword shines.

She moves toward him.

The soldiers block her again.

I look toward the tower.

The drainage tunnel opened beneath its northern foundation.

Dalia's people are somewhere below us.

That is where the central oath waits.

We cannot reach it through the courtyard.

Not while two hundred soldiers stand between us and the entrance.

I use Dread Step.

The movement carries me onto the roof of Elara's wagon.

Another step launches me toward the northern wall.

Crossbow bolts follow.

One pierces my shoulder.

Another cuts across my leg.

I land beside the opening created by the miners' explosion.

Halvek sees me.

"Stop him!"

Every soldier turns.

That gives Elara room.

Silver authority spreads through the courtyard again.

"Blackridge Fortress belongs to Asteria," she shouts. "Not Lucien. Not Halvek. Not the thing inside the crucible."

The system appears in front of me.

Contested territory detected.

Allied ruler is asserting a recognized claim.

Population acceptance insufficient.

Warden's Claim cannot be established.

The soldiers need to choose.

They cannot choose while the crucible holds their minds.

We cannot free their minds without reaching the crucible.

A circle.

Halvek built the system perfectly.

I look toward Soren.

He is fighting three of his former soldiers at once.

He refuses to kill them.

His arms are covered in cuts.

"Tell them!" I shout.

He blocks another strike.

"Tell them what?"

"Why you chose Elara!"

Soren understands.

He knocks one soldier's weapon aside.

"My oath was to King Edric!"

His voice carries through the courtyard.

"Lucien altered it without my consent. He ordered me to murder people I swore to defend."

The soldier in front of him trembles.

Soren grabs the man's shoulders.

"I know you can hear me, Ren."

The black crown across the soldier's forehead flashes.

His sword stops.

Only for a moment.

"My daughter attended your wedding," Soren says. "Your wife is waiting in the southern district. Lucien will burn you and call it loyalty."

Fear beneath the fortress shifts.

It gains direction.

Not only terror of the crucible.

Rejection.

Another soldier lowers his weapon.

Halvek screams.

"Obey!"

The black crowns burn brighter.

The soldiers attack again.

But the hesitation happened.

The system responds.

Minor population rejection detected.

Temporary Warden entry condition available.

Protect those resisting hostile authority.

Silver-black lines appear around three soldiers.

Then five.

Then nine.

They are not free.

But some part of them is resisting.

That is enough.

I open my marked palm.

"Dread Refuge."

The Warden bond spreads beyond Elara.

It reaches toward every soldier attempting to resist the crucible.

Their supernatural burden moves into me.

Golden fire erupts across my body.

I scream.

There is too much.

Nine obedience seals.

Nine burning oaths.

Nine minds fighting against the tower.

The Mark begins cracking again.

But the soldiers stop moving.

They fall to their knees.

The black crowns on their foreheads turn gray.

Soren stares at them.

"Shin!"

"I can't hold it for long."

Halvek's fear finally appears.

A thick chain connects him to my Mark.

He is afraid of the soldiers becoming people again.

Dread received: 23

I focus on the entrance beneath the tower.

"Get Elara below!"

Malrec grabs Elara's arm.

Seraphine cuts through the chains blocking them.

Soren rallies the soldiers still loyal to him.

They form a narrow path toward the breach.

I hold Dread Refuge.

More soldiers begin resisting as they watch the first nine fall free.

The burden grows.

Twelve.

Fifteen.

Twenty.

My knees strike the stone.

Blood runs from the eye in my palm.

Oathbreaker remains in my hand, but cracks spread along its blade.

Halvek steps toward me.

The soldiers part around him.

"You believe taking their pain makes you their protector?"

"No."

I look up at him.

"It makes me the person between them and you."

He raises one hand.

Golden chains form into a spear.

"You cannot carry two hundred souls."

"Probably not."

The spear moves toward my heart.

Seraphine's white sword cuts it in half.

She lands between us.

"Go," she says.

"You're helping?"

"I am enforcing judgment."

"That sounded defensive."

"It was."

She attacks Halvek.

Their weapons collide.

The metal crown around his head creates blades of golden chain.

Seraphine cuts through them while pushing him away from the tower.

I release Dread Refuge from the soldiers whose crowns have gone dark.

They collapse but remain alive.

The burden inside me weakens enough to move.

I use Dread Step one more time.

The world blurs.

I enter the breach beneath the tower.

Dalia and fifteen miners wait in the dark tunnel.

Several hold short swords and mining hammers.

Dalia looks at the blood covering me.

"You look worse than you did yesterday."

"That happens quickly."

A deep golden light shines farther inside the tunnel.

Elara and Malrec enter behind me.

Soren remains above with his soldiers.

Seraphine's battle shakes the ceiling.

Dalia points toward the light.

"The foundation chamber is ahead. We opened the wall, but something is inside."

"What?"

"We don't know."

"That is becoming normal."

We move through the tunnel.

Golden symbols cover the stone.

The closer we get to the chamber, the louder the trapped fear becomes.

The miners cannot hear it.

Elara can.

She grips the sides of her head.

"So many voices."

Malrec supports her.

"They are the garrison's oaths."

"No."

She looks toward the golden light.

"There are more than two hundred."

We reach the broken wall.

Beyond it lies a chamber large enough to contain the entire fortress.

Golden chains fill the air.

Thousands of them.

They extend upward into the courtyard, outward into Asteria, and downward into a circular pit.

At the center stands the Oath Crucible.

A massive black crown surrounds a stone chair.

Someone sits inside it.

An old man with silver hair.

His body is thin.

Golden chains pass through his arms, chest, neck, and eyes.

A broken crown rests against his head.

Elara stops breathing.

"Father."

King Edric's eyes open.

They glow gold.

For one moment, he looks toward his daughter.

Recognition appears.

"Elara."

She runs forward.

The chains tighten.

The king screams.

Every soldier above us screams with him.

A message fills my vision.

Central oath source identified.

King Edric Asteria

Status: Living authority core

Warning: The Oath Crucible is using the king's soul to control the garrison.

Warning: Severing the wrong connection will kill the king and every oath bound to him.

Elara stops several feet from the chair.

Tears gather in her eyes.

Her father looks toward me.

The golden light inside his eyes flickers.

Then something else looks through them.

Black.

Empty.

Ancient.

The king's mouth opens.

Two voices speak at once.

His own.

And another beneath it.

"The World Raider has entered the throne."

The chamber doors close behind us.

The golden chains begin moving.

King Edric's human voice breaks through for one final moment.

"Do not free me."

The black presence takes control again.

The crucible awakens.

"Kill me."
