Chapter 24 - The World Raider Chapter 24: The Army of One Will

The Crown accepts my challenge.

I feel it through every recovered royal anchor.

A golden pressure moves south of Blackridge, surrounding twelve thousand soldiers, forty-seven prisoners, and Prince Caelan.

The army does not react like thousands of people.

It reacts like one creature.

One command.

One will.

The system updates.

Warden Hunt initiated.

Designated enemy: The Crown of Asteria

Distance from primary territory: 76 miles

Estimated arrival at Blackridge Fortress: 43 hours

Enemy-controlled forces: 12,184

Living shields: 47

Authority core: Prince Caelan Asteria

Warning: Damage inflicted upon the Crown's controlled forces may be transferred to living shields.

Forty-seven prisoners.

Mara and forty-six others.

Six people already died when the Crown infiltrated Wren's Hollow.

I feel the empty spaces they left inside the claim.

The system records them as losses.

The Mark records the fear surrounding their deaths.

Neither tells me their names.

Warden's Claim does.

Elias Thorn.

Marna Feld.

Tobin Reed.

Lysa Harrow.

Gareth Pell.

And a twelve-year-old boy named Corin Vale.

They accepted Elara's protection.

They died inside the territory I chose to guard.

The Crown's army continues moving.

Forty-three hours.

Oathbreaker's new third edge pulses with territorial Dread.

The weapon wants pursuit.

The Mark wants punishment.

Kael's designation agrees with both.

"Come closer," our voices say together.

The Crown responds through the royal network.

We are coming.

The connection closes.

The courtyard returns.

Soldiers stare at me.

Some look toward the dark southern horizon as though they expect twelve thousand men to appear immediately.

Elara steps closer.

"Release the Dread Aura."

I look around.

Black mist covers the courtyard.

The broken-chain banner pulls against its pole.

Several wounded soldiers are struggling to breathe beneath the pressure.

I did not realize the aura had activated.

I close my marked hand.

The mist withdraws.

Kael's anger remains inside me.

So does mine.

"I'm in control," I say.

"No one asked."

"You were going to."

"I was going to tell you not to make decisions while the Mark is feeding on your anger."

"It feeds on fear."

"Tonight, I cannot tell the difference."

Queen Selene watches from the bench.

Healers have wrapped a cloak around her, but she still looks as though a strong wind could knock her over.

Her eyes are not weak.

They move from me to Oathbreaker.

"The Warden Hunt is affecting you."

"You know what it is?"

"The Blood remembers earlier forms of territorial magic."

Selene touches the silver-crimson symbol around her wrist.

"A Warden protects a boundary. A Hunt begins when that boundary is violated."

"That sounds useful."

"It is designed to make restraint feel like betrayal."

The words settle harder than I expect.

I look toward Wren's Hollow through the claim.

People are repairing the quarry entrance.

Families search for those taken.

Six bodies lie beneath white cloth near the broken-chain banner.

Retaliation does not feel optional.

It feels like the only honest response.

Selene sees the answer in my expression.

"The Hunt wants you to believe every person connected to the Crown is your enemy."

"The Crown is controlling them."

"Knowing that does not prevent anger from becoming convenient."

Kael speaks inside my mind.

"She sounds like Saint Orin."

"Did you listen to him?"

"No."

"That explains several things."

Elara looks toward me.

"You're speaking to Kael."

"He disagrees with your mother."

"That also explains several things."

Malrec approaches with the fragments of Nightfall wrapped in black cloth.

Commander Soren and Aldric follow him.

Aldric arrived at Blackridge shortly after the fortress fell. He has spent most of the night examining the destroyed crucible and criticizing everyone responsible for damaging it.

Mostly me.

"We need a council," Elara says.

I look south.

"We need to move."

"We need a plan before you walk into twelve thousand soldiers."

"That sounds slower."

"It is meant to."

We gather inside Blackridge's command hall.

The room survived Halvek's transformation, although cracks run through its ceiling. Maps cover one wall. The largest shows the central valley between Blackridge and Valenford.

A line of red markers represents Caelan's army.

The group moving with the Crown is large enough to cover the main road for miles.

Soren moves the first marker closer to Blackridge.

"At their current pace, they should reach the northern plains by tomorrow evening."

"The Crown may force them to march through the night," Malrec says.

"That will exhaust the soldiers."

"The Crown does not care."

Queen Selene sits beside Elara.

Mara's empty chair remains near the end of the table.

No one mentions it.

Elara looks toward the map.

"What forces can we gather?"

Soren answers.

"Blackridge has one hundred twenty-six soldiers who chose to remain. Thirty-seven from Wren's Hollow are still capable of fighting."

"Greybank?" Elara asks.

"Nearly eighty miners and militia."

"Millford?"

"Twenty hunters. Perhaps another thirty villagers with basic weapons."

"Eastmere?"

"Forty fighters and twelve boats."

Malrec looks across the markers.

"Fewer than four hundred trained or partially trained fighters."

"Against twelve thousand," Dalia says from the doorway.

She enters with Elder Rowan and Taren Vale.

The three village representatives received the Voice message and traveled to Blackridge immediately.

Dalia places both hands on the table.

"Greybank will fight."

Elara looks toward her.

"You joined the claim to protect your people."

"We joined because Lucien would destroy us separately."

"He may destroy you together."

Dalia shrugs.

"Then at least he has to make the effort."

Elder Rowan does not share her confidence.

"Millford cannot survive another seizure. We have moved the remaining grain north, but if the army reaches the village—"

"It won't," I say.

Everyone looks at me.

Elara's expression becomes cautious.

"You cannot guarantee that."

"No. But the Crown is not marching toward Millford."

I point toward the golden structure marked behind Caelan.

"It wants the Voice and Blood anchors."

Queen Selene nods.

"The Crown was created to direct Asteria's military authority. Without the other anchors, it cannot fully recognize a ruler."

"So it brings the army here," Soren says, "takes the anchors, and forces the kingdom to accept the Hollow Prince."

"And if it cannot take them?" Taren asks.

Selene looks toward the map.

"It destroys them."

Silence follows.

Aldric moves several markers away from the central road.

"The army is not the real problem."

Dalia stares at him.

"I would consider twelve thousand soldiers a problem."

"They are an extension of one."

Aldric points toward the Crown anchor.

"Break the Crown's ownership, and the army becomes twelve thousand individual people again."

"Some will still support Lucien," Malrec says.

"Some," Elara replies. "Not all."

I study the map.

The Crown treats the entire force as one structure.

That is why its fear feels unified.

The soldiers' individual emotions still exist, but they are buried beneath the military identity forced over them.

The Crown's army.

Not Caelan's soldiers.

Not Asterians.

Not people with homes and families.

An army belonging to an object.

The same pattern as Halvek and the crucible.

"Voice can speak to them," I say.

Elara touches the silver symbol around her wrist.

"The Crown will block me."

"Not if Blood identifies them individually."

Queen Selene looks toward me.

Understanding appears.

"The Crown commands the army collectively."

"Blood recognizes individual connections."

Aldric begins moving his rings above the map.

"If the Voice addresses each soldier through the identity written inside the military seal, the Crown may not be able to suppress every message as one command."

Soren looks doubtful.

"There are twelve thousand names."

"The regional military register is stored inside Blackridge's communication tower," Malrec says.

"Parts of it were destroyed," Aldric replies.

"Can it be repaired?" Elara asks.

Aldric gives her an offended look.

"Of course."

"How long?"

"Three days."

"We have less than two."

"Then it will be repaired poorly."

"That sounds dangerous," I say.

"All repairs made around you become dangerous."

Elara studies the road.

"If we speak to the soldiers by name, we may weaken the Crown's control."

"May," Seraphine says.

She stands near the far wall, cleaning blood from her white armor.

Everyone turns toward her.

The Ivory Judge continues.

"The Crown is not an obedience seal. It embodies recognized military authority."

"Recognized by whom?" I ask.

"The throne network."

"We have two anchors."

"And the Hollow Prince possesses the Crown."

"Which the Blood rejected."

"Blood rejected his identity," Seraphine says. "The Crown recognizes whoever commands the greatest force acting in Asteria's defense."

Dalia looks toward the map.

"He is invading our territory."

"He will call it the suppression of a rebellion."

"And the Crown believes that?"

"It believes whatever definition allows it to fulfill its function."

I rest Oathbreaker against the edge of the table.

"Then we change the definition."

Seraphine's gray eyes move toward the weapon.

"You cannot rely on Conceptual Severance every time language becomes inconvenient."

"It has worked."

"Each use requires a clear contradiction supported by recognized authority."

"We have Voice, Blood, Judgment, and several thousand people who do not want to be conquered."

"Several thousand people are not an authority."

Elara looks toward her.

"That sounds like something the old throne would say."

Seraphine's sword glows faintly.

She considers the judgment behind Elara's words.

Then lowers her eyes.

"Yes."

The room becomes quiet.

Seraphine does not apologize often.

She appears irritated whenever she realizes she should.

Queen Selene points toward the line of prisoners moving with the army.

"The living shields must be removed before any attack on the Crown."

Aldric moves one metal ring around the prisoner markers.

"Their collars are likely connected to a central transfer seal."

"Where?" I ask.

"Caelan," Selene says.

Elara becomes still.

"The Crown is using him as the army's authority core. Every command and protective effect passes through his royal connection."

"So damage reaches Caelan first," Malrec says, "then transfers into the prisoners."

Selene nods.

"To free them, someone must reach my son."

"I'll do it," I say.

Elara immediately responds.

"No."

"I wasn't asking."

"You are not walking alone into the center of an army."

"I won't be alone."

Malrec looks toward me.

"I assume I am about to dislike this."

"You know Caelan's military formation."

"Yes."

"You're coming."

"I was correct."

Seraphine places her sword on the table.

"I will accompany you."

Elara looks toward her.

"You need to remain here."

"My judgment may be required to separate lawful military oaths from the Crown's forced ownership."

"And Blackridge?"

"Soren commands the fortress."

"Lucien's army may attack while you're gone."

Seraphine looks toward the approaching markers.

"If we fail inside the camp, the walls will not matter."

Elara turns toward me.

"I'm coming too."

"No."

The word leaves my mouth too quickly.

Her eyes narrow.

"You do not decide that."

"The Crown wants the Voice and Blood."

"Which may be necessary to free Caelan."

"We can carry a projection."

"The Crown will know the difference."

"It already does."

"My brother may not respond to a projection."

"He responded to your mother through Blood."

"And the Crown cut the connection."

Queen Selene places one hand over Elara's.

"I will guide them."

Elara looks toward her.

"You just escaped the Blood Vault."

"I am the strongest connection to Caelan that does not require placing both recovered anchors inside the enemy camp."

"I cannot remain here while Mara and Caelan—"

"You can," Selene says.

Her voice is gentle.

That makes the command feel stronger.

"You can remain where your people need their claimant."

Elara pulls her hand away.

"The claim does not need me standing behind a wall."

"It needs someone who understands that every battle cannot be made personal."

Elara's anger rises.

So does her pain.

Her father fragmented across the network.

Her brother controlled.

Her mother barely alive.

Mara captured.

Every part of this war is personal to her.

Queen Selene knows that.

She continues.

"If you enter the camp, the Crown will focus every chain on you. Shin will spend the entire mission protecting you rather than completing it."

"I can protect myself."

Selene looks toward me.

"Would you allow her to take the risk?"

"No."

Elara turns.

"You were not invited into that question."

"I answered anyway."

She stares at me.

I feel the Warden bond between us.

Her fear.

Her frustration.

The small part of her that is relieved someone refuses to let her walk into the army.

She probably senses my emotions too.

Guilt from Wren's Hollow.

Anger toward the Crown.

Fear that I will return too late again.

Elara lowers her voice.

"Bring them back."

"All of them?"

"Mara. Caelan. The prisoners."

"That seems demanding."

"And yourself."

"That makes it worse."

Her expression does not soften.

"Promise."

King Edric called standing between her and the fire a promise.

I still dislike the word.

Promises become expectations.

Expectations become bonds.

Bonds create something worth losing.

"I'll try."

"That is not a promise."

"It is the honest version."

Elara looks ready to argue.

Queen Selene interrupts.

"It will have to be enough."

The plan forms around the approaching army.

Aldric will repair the regional military register and connect it to Voice and Blood.

When the Crown comes within range, Elara will address individual soldiers through their own seals.

Blackridge will not attack.

The surrounding villages will evacuate civilians into Greybank's mines and Eastmere's marshes.

Soren will prepare the fortress to endure a siege without returning lethal force.

Meanwhile, Malrec, Seraphine, and I will enter the royal camp.

Queen Selene will use her Blood connection to guide us toward Caelan.

We will locate the prisoners, identify the central transfer seal, and sever the Crown's ownership before the army reaches Blackridge.

It is a reasonable plan.

That makes me suspicious.

The council ends before sunrise.

Preparations spread across every claimed territory.

The Voice carries orders, warnings, and evacuation routes.

Unlike Lucien's commands, Elara's messages always include a choice.

People may remain.

They may leave.

They may fight.

They may refuse.

Most choose to help.

Not because the Voice forces them.

Because they know what happens if the Crown wins.

I return to the western wall.

The sky remains dark.

The Warden Hunt paints a thin golden line across the horizon.

The target is moving.

Queen Selene approaches alone.

She walks slowly but refuses the healer following several feet behind her.

"You should be resting," I say.

"So should you."

"That advice has failed repeatedly."

She stops beside me.

For several seconds, we look south.

"You care for my daughter," she says.

"That sounded like an accusation."

"It was an observation."

"She's part of my claim."

Selene looks toward me.

"The claim is part of hers."

"That seems unnecessarily complicated."

"Do you protect her because she gives your power direction?"

"No."

The answer comes too quickly.

Selene notices.

I continue.

"She gave people a reason to choose something other than fear."

"And that matters to you."

"It makes the Warden abilities stronger."

"You sound like a man trying to explain his humanity as a tactical advantage."

I remain silent.

She almost smiles.

"Elara does the same thing in reverse."

"What does that mean?"

"She explains tactical decisions as moral necessities because admitting she wants something for herself feels selfish."

"That sounds exhausting."

"It is."

The Warden Hunt pulses.

The golden line grows clearer.

Selene looks toward my marked hand.

"Do not return Caelan because you believe it will keep Elara grateful."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Do not save Mara because losing another person beneath your protection feels like failure."

"That is part of the reason."

"Then recognize it."

Her voice becomes firmer.

"The Hunt will take every emotion you refuse to name and turn it into permission."

"Permission for what?"

"To decide that anyone connected to your enemy deserves whatever happens next."

I look toward the twelve thousand distant points hidden beneath one golden identity.

"I know they're controlled."

"You know it now."

Selene places one hand against the wall.

"When you see Mara injured, when Caelan attacks you, and when the Crown uses those soldiers to keep you from reaching them, knowledge may become less convenient."

Kael speaks inside me.

"She knows."

Selene's eyes move toward the second designation.

"Yes."

"You can hear him?" I ask.

"Blood recognizes both occupants."

Kael uses my mouth.

"He does not need another mother."

Selene looks unimpressed.

"You burned three cities while insisting every death was caused by someone else's choice."

Kael withdraws.

I feel the memory fragment close around itself.

"What happened in those cities?" I ask.

Selene looks south.

"That is his story to admit."

"He may not."

"Then do not let his anger become yours."

She turns to leave.

"Queen Selene."

She stops.

"Can Blood find Mara?"

"Once we are closer."

"And the six who died?"

Her expression changes.

"What about them?"

"Can Blood preserve their names inside the claim?"

"Yes."

"Do it."

The system recorded losses.

I want the territory to remember people.

Not numbers.

Selene lowers her head.

"I will."

By evening, Blackridge's damaged tower is active again.

Aldric has connected dozens of floating rings around its upper platform. Every few minutes, one explodes and he shouts at the assistants beneath him.

The repair appears to be progressing.

Poorly.

As promised.

The military register begins recovering names.

Thousands of them.

Each name creates a faint Blood connection.

Not enough to control the soldier.

Enough to recognize an individual beneath the Crown's collective authority.

Warden's Claim updates.

Enemy collective structure mapped: 11%

Individual identities recovered: 1,343

The percentage rises slowly.

We do not have time to reach one hundred.

Malrec prepares near the western gate.

His black armor has been stripped of royal seals. Greybank's smiths attached the fragments of Nightfall to a shorter iron blade.

The result is uneven.

Black metal runs through the weapon like broken glass.

"Did they repair it?" I ask.

"No."

He draws the blade.

Dark energy gathers along the cracks.

"They gave the pieces something to hold."

"Does it have a name?"

"Nightfall."

"It looks different."

"So do you."

"That answer felt personal."

"It was."

Seraphine joins us wearing a gray cloak over her white armor. Her sword is hidden inside a plain sheath.

No illusion can fully conceal a Royal Blade, but most soldiers will not expect two of them to enter their camp together.

Aldric approaches with three metal rings.

"One for each of you."

He presses the first around Malrec's wrist.

Then Seraphine's.

The third stops before touching mine.

The Mark looks at it.

Aldric looks back.

"I dislike sealing something containing two World Raider designations."

"It probably dislikes you too."

"That is not reassuring."

He forces the ring around my wrist.

Fear Sense weakens.

The Warden Hunt remains.

The Crown's golden line is too strong to hide.

"You will appear as soldiers attached to the southern reserve," Aldric says. "The seals should copy the army's collective identity for approximately six hours."

"What happens afterward?" Seraphine asks.

"The Crown recognizes you as foreign."

"And before?"

"It may still recognize Shin."

Everyone looks at me.

"That seems like a flaw," I say.

"It is the best I can do without placing you in a box."

"The box worked last time."

"You were discovered."

"The box was not responsible."

Elara waits beside the gate.

She carries no crown.

Only the silver and crimson symbols around her wrist.

Voice and Blood.

She looks toward Seraphine.

"Bring my brother back."

"If he can be separated from the Crown without destroying him."

Elara's expression hardens.

"That was not the correct answer."

"It was the truthful one."

Then Elara turns toward Malrec.

"Mara will insult you when you find her."

"I am prepared."

Finally, she looks at me.

The Warden bond tightens.

I feel her trying to speak through it.

The connection carries emotion more clearly than words.

Fear.

Trust.

Irritation.

Something warmer beneath both.

I hold out the signal stone she gave me at Wren's Hollow.

"I still have it."

The crystal remains cracked but functional.

Elara closes my fingers around it.

"Then use it."

"For what?"

"To tell me you're alive before I have to feel you stop breathing."

"That happened twice."

"Yes."

"That explains the concern."

She lets go of my hand.

The western gate opens.

We leave Blackridge beneath a moonless sky.

Taren's river guides carry us south through narrow marsh channels.

The boats have no lanterns.

Reeds rise on both sides, hiding us from royal patrols.

For several hours, the golden line of the Warden Hunt grows brighter.

The Crown is close enough to feel through Aldric's concealment.

Its army covers the plains ahead.

Campfires stretch across the horizon like fallen stars.

Twelve thousand soldiers sleep, march, eat, and stand guard beneath one authority.

Their individual fears barely reach me.

The Crown catches each emotion before it leaves them.

Kael becomes restless.

"It is learning from Dominion."

"What is?"

"The Crown."

"It's an anchor."

"It is an idea given enough power to defend itself."

"That describes most authorities here."

"Now you understand why I tried to burn them."

"Not completely."

We leave the boats several miles west of the camp.

Malrec leads us through forest paths used by army scouts.

He knows every signal, patrol interval, and formation mark.

Near midnight, we reach the first royal perimeter.

Hundreds of tents cover the plain.

Golden chains float above them, invisible to ordinary eyes.

They connect each section of the army to a structure at the center.

The Crown anchor.

It resembles a massive golden circle with seven points but no center, suspended above Caelan's command pavilion.

Prisoners are held near it.

I can feel Mara.

Her fear is sharp.

Controlled.

Angry.

Alive.

Queen Selene's Blood connection enters through the signal stone.

A crimson thread forms around my wrist.

Caelan is near the center, her voice whispers.

"Can he hear us?"

Not without alerting the Crown.

Seraphine studies the camp.

"The prisoners are too exposed."

Rows of soldiers surround them.

Black collars connect each prisoner to the Crown.

A golden chain leaves every collar and enters Caelan's pavilion.

Malrec looks toward the nearest patrol.

"We enter as returning scouts."

"And if they ask for a report?" I ask.

"I speak."

"That seems unfair."

"You do not understand military procedure."

"I understand lying."

"Not convincingly."

We walk toward the perimeter.

Four soldiers block the path.

Their eyes glow faintly gold.

"Unit."

Malrec raises his sealed wrist.

"Southern reserve reconnaissance."

The soldier examines Aldric's false identity.

The golden crown above the camp responds.

For one second, its attention touches us.

The ring around my wrist becomes hot.

Kael's designation presses against the seal.

I force it down.

The soldier turns toward Seraphine.

"Report."

"Nothing west of the river," Malrec answers.

The guard's eyes remain on Seraphine.

"I asked the officer."

Malrec's expression becomes dangerous.

Seraphine speaks before he creates a problem.

"Three boats near the northern marsh. Civilian construction. No military markings."

The guard looks toward me.

"And him?"

"Local guide," Malrec says.

"I don't look local," I reply.

Malrec closes his eyes briefly.

The guard's suspicion increases.

The Crown examines me again.

The Warden Hunt reacts.

Golden and silver-black authority touch.

The seal around my wrist cracks.

Seraphine steps closer to the guard.

Her judgment thread enters his military seal.

"You have received our identification," she says. "Do you possess evidence that it is false?"

The guard's fear appears briefly beneath the Crown.

"No."

"Then your suspicion does not justify delaying a recognized officer."

The judgment accepts her statement.

The patrol steps aside.

Malrec waits until we are inside the camp.

"Do not speak again."

"That seems controlling."

"I will allow the Crown to identify you next time."

I decide to remain quiet.

We move between tents.

The soldiers behave normally at first.

Some sleep.

Some gamble quietly.

Others sharpen weapons or write letters.

The Crown does not erase them completely while they obey.

It only compresses every emotion that might interfere with the army's movement.

The closer we get to the center, the less individual behavior remains.

Soldiers sit in perfect rows.

They eat at the same speed.

They turn their heads at the same angles.

The army becomes one body near its authority core.

Warden Hunt updates.

Distance to designated enemy: 0.4 miles

Living shields detected: 47

Authority core detected: 1

Warning: Crown awareness increasing.

We reach the prisoner enclosure.

A wooden barrier surrounds the captives.

Golden symbols cover every post.

Royal soldiers stand at each entrance.

Mara sits near the center with her hands tied.

A bruise covers one side of her face.

Beside her are village leaders, seal masters, nobles, and officials who resisted Lucien.

I recognize several people taken from Wren's Hollow.

They look exhausted.

Alive.

Mara raises her head.

Her eyes pass over us without recognition.

Aldric's seals are working.

Then she looks directly at me.

Her expression becomes irritated.

She knows.

I do not know how.

She mouths one word.

Late.

I almost smile.

Malrec approaches the enclosure guard.

"Prisoner transfer order."

"Destination?"

"Central command."

"Authorization?"

Malrec holds up a false seal.

The guard examines it.

The Crown begins turning toward us.

Seraphine steps closer.

"We require the red-haired prisoner and the three village officials captured at Wren's Hollow."

Mara looks offended by the description.

The guard reaches toward the gate.

Then stops.

His eyes turn fully gold.

The Crown speaks through him.

"Denied."

Every soldier nearby becomes still.

The concealment ring around my wrist splits.

Golden light travels through the crack.

The Crown knows.

Malrec draws his reforged sword.

Seraphine's white blade leaves its sheath.

I break the ring completely.

Oathbreaker forms.

The nearest soldiers raise their weapons in perfect unison.

Mara sighs inside the enclosure.

"I knew subtlety would not survive him."

The Crown's voice enters the entire camp.

"Warden."

The golden structure above Caelan's pavilion opens.

Thousands of soldiers awaken at once.

"You entered my army."

"I was invited."

"I ordered you to submit."

"You should know the answer by now."

Golden chains descend from the Crown.

They do not attack us.

They tighten around the prisoners.

Mara's collar glows.

Pain crosses her face.

I stop moving.

The Crown understands the advantage.

"Strike one soldier," it says, "and a prisoner receives the wound."

Malrec lowers his blade slightly.

Seraphine's judgment scales appear.

"The prisoners are not lawful combatants."

"Their rebellion made them part of the conflict."

"They have not been judged."

"The Crown does not require judgment."

Seraphine's sword turns white.

"That statement is enough."

She swings toward the nearest collar connection.

The blade stops.

The chain passes through the Crown, Caelan, and every soldier in the camp.

Judgment cannot separate it from this distance.

Mara looks toward me.

"Don't attack the chains."

"You know how they work?"

"I've had time."

A soldier strikes the side of her collar.

She winces.

"The prisoners are not the anchor."

"Caelan is," I say.

"Partly."

The Crown tightens the collar again.

Mara forces the next words out.

"The army is."

I examine the connections.

Every prisoner's collar enters Caelan's pavilion.

But those chains divide before reaching him.

They spread through twelve thousand military seals.

The living shield is distributed across the entire force.

To free one prisoner, I would need to separate the hostage network from the army itself.

The Crown prepared for Oathbreaker.

Kael speaks inside me.

"It learned your technique."

The soldiers begin closing around us.

More than a hundred already surround the enclosure.

Thousands beyond them.

Malrec looks toward the command pavilion.

"We need Caelan."

The pavilion opens.

Prince Caelan walks into the night.

Dark blue armor covers his body.

Black-gold chains wrap around every limb.

His sword is fused to his right hand.

The Crown floats behind him, following every step.

He looks toward Queen Selene's Blood thread around my wrist.

Then at Oathbreaker.

His eyes remain his own.

For now.

"You should have listened," he says.

"I rarely do."

Caelan's gaze moves toward Malrec.

"Lord Malrec."

"My prince."

"You abandoned your oath."

"I reclaimed it."

Then Caelan looks toward Seraphine.

"Ivory Judge."

"You are acting under coercion."

"I know."

Her sword glows.

"Do you reject the Crown's command?"

"Yes."

The judgment accepts his answer immediately.

White light spreads across the chains binding him.

The Crown pulls tighter.

Caelan falls to one knee.

The soldiers surrounding us raise their weapons.

Seraphine steps forward.

"I recognize Prince Caelan as an unwilling authority core."

The Crown speaks through every soldier.

"Recognition does not release ownership."

I focus Oathbreaker on the concept.

Caelan belongs to the Crown.

It appears obvious.

Too obvious.

A false definition placed in front of a deeper one.

I do not cut.

Caelan looks toward me.

"Good."

"You knew what I was examining."

"The Crown wants you to sever that connection."

"Why?"

His sword arm rises against his will.

The blade points toward Malrec.

"Because my life is holding something else closed."

The Blood thread around my wrist burns.

Queen Selene's fear enters it.

Caelan, no.

The prince's face twists in pain.

"Mother."

Golden chains cover his mouth.

The Crown takes his voice.

"If the Warden releases the commander, the army receives its final command."

Seraphine raises her blade.

"What command?"

Caelan's mouth opens.

The Crown answers through him.

"Extermination."

The camp's golden chains brighten.

Images enter the royal network.

Wren's Hollow.

Millford.

Greybank.

Eastmere.

Blackridge.

Every claimed territory.

The twelve thousand soldiers are not only marching to capture the anchors.

Caelan's resistance is preventing the Crown from issuing an order to erase every settlement supporting Elara.

If I sever him incorrectly, the army attacks the civilians immediately.

The Crown moves his sword.

Caelan charges.

Malrec blocks the first strike.

The impact sends a wave through the camp.

His reforged Nightfall cracks.

Caelan attacks again.

Malrec retreats, refusing to strike him directly.

The surrounding soldiers tighten their formation.

Seraphine moves to help.

Three hundred blades turn toward the prisoners.

She stops.

The Crown has trapped every option.

Fight Caelan, and the prisoners suffer.

Free Caelan, and the army receives the extermination order.

Attack the army, and damage transfers into the hostages.

Retreat, and the Crown reaches Blackridge with everything intact.

Mara looks toward me through the golden barrier.

"There's another problem."

"That seems unnecessary."

"The collars are listening."

"To what?"

"Fear."

The Mark opens.

I finally see it.

The hostages' terror is flowing through their collars.

The Crown is gathering it.

Not as Dread.

As proof.

The more the prisoners fear Elara's forces, the more the Crown can define them as people needing royal protection rather than prisoners being used as shields.

It is rewriting their captivity into rescue.

"They're afraid of us," I say.

Mara looks toward the scythe and the soldiers surrounding it.

"Currently, yes."

The Crown's voice spreads across the camp.

"The rebels have entered to slaughter the king's army."

The soldiers' military seals accept the statement.

The prisoners' collars begin doing the same.

Seraphine's judgment scales shake.

"If they believe the definition, it gains legitimacy."

The Crown is creating its contradiction before I can.

By the time Elara speaks through the Voice, the army may already believe we attacked first.

Caelan's sword strikes Malrec again.

The reforged blade breaks along one edge.

Malrec slides backward.

"Shin!"

I look across the camp.

Twelve thousand soldiers.

Forty-seven hostages.

One prince holding back an extermination order.

One Crown turning every person into part of a single lie.

Warden Hunt pulses.

Designated enemy located.

Retaliatory authority available.

Current target definition: The Crown of Asteria

Warning: Target is distributed across 12,184 accepted components.

The Crown considers the soldiers part of itself.

That is its strength.

It may also be the only opening.

I cannot sever its ownership from outside.

I need to enter the definition.

Become one of the army's accepted components.

Kael understands.

"No."

"You said that too quickly."

"If the Crown accepts you as a soldier, it reaches the Mark."

"And the Mark reaches it."

"It will command you."

"Probably."

"You are relying on the Warden title to resist."

"It has worked before."

"You are becoming predictable."

"So is everyone warning me."

I dismiss Oathbreaker.

Black smoke returns to my palm.

The Crown notices.

Caelan's attack stops.

Malrec remains ready.

Seraphine looks toward me.

"What are you doing?"

"Changing sides."

Mara stares at me.

"That is not funny."

"It wasn't a joke."

I step away from Malrec and Seraphine.

The soldiers open a path.

The Crown's golden structure turns toward me.

"Submit."

I raise both empty hands.

"Recognize me as part of the army."

The camp becomes silent.

Even Caelan looks frightened.

The Crown examines the World Raider designation.

The Warden title.

The Mark of Dread.

Kael's dormant designation.

"You are foreign authority."

"I am a weapon."

The Crown understands that language.

Weapons belong to armies.

Armies belong to the Crown.

Golden chains descend around me.

Seraphine raises her sword.

I look toward her.

"Do not cut them."

"That is an order."

"A request."

"That is not better."

Malrec looks ready to attack anyway.

Mara grips the bars of the enclosure.

"Shin, this is an especially bad plan."

"That usually means it has potential."

The first chain touches my shoulder.

The Crown writes a definition across my soul.

Weapon of the Royal Army.

The Warden Hunt reacts violently.

The Mark opens.

Kael screams.

The Reaper's bond tightens from beyond the closed Gate.

Every authority inside me rejects the Crown.

I force them still.

"Accept," I say.

The golden chains enter my body.

Pain disappears.

So does the camp.

I stand inside a vast golden space.

Twelve thousand soldiers surround me as faceless figures.

The prisoners kneel at the center.

Caelan hangs above them.

Golden chains enter every part of him.

At the far end stands the Crown.

Not floating.

Worn by something without a head.

The empty body points toward me.

A place opens among the soldiers.

Kneel and receive command.

I walk forward.

The army's fear enters my Mark.

Not from outside.

From within the Crown's own definition.

For the first time, the soldiers' individual emotions become visible.

Thousands of trapped names.

Thousands of people waiting beneath one will.

I lower myself onto one knee.

The Crown reaches toward my head.

Outside, my physical body kneels in the camp.

Golden chains cover the Mark.

Elara's signal stone burns against my wrist.

Her voice enters faintly through the Warden bond.

Shin, what did you do?

The Crown's hand touches me.

A command begins entering my soul.

Destroy the Free Asterian Claim.

I smile.

"I found the inside."

The purple eye opens beneath the golden chains.

Oathbreaker forms inside the Crown's authority.

Not in my hand.

Behind its throne.

The blade rests against the definition holding twelve thousand people together.

The army belongs to the Crown.

The Crown turns.

Too late.

I rise.

"Now let's see what belongs to whom."
