Chapter 12 - The World Raider Chapter 12: The Rejected Heir

"My sister," Lucien says. "You have finally returned to me."

His image fills the black circle above the platform.

Prince Lucien sits on a golden throne, dressed in white and gold robes. A thin crown rests against his dark hair, but the metal appears fused to his skin.

Black veins spread from beneath it and disappear behind his ears.

His eyes are completely dark.

No white.

No color.

Only emptiness.

Behind the throne, something enormous moves through the shadows.

I cannot see its body, but the movement causes every corrupted symbol in the monastery to pulse.

Elara stares at her brother.

"You sealed Father beneath the palace."

Lucien rests one hand against the throne.

"So Aldric showed you his carefully selected version of the truth."

"You used people as fuel."

"I inherited a kingdom built upon sacrifices made long before either of us was born."

"And you continued it."

"I prevented Asteria from collapsing."

The black symbols across the walls become brighter.

Fear Sense reaches toward the projection.

Lucien is too far away for me to sense him normally, but the throne network connects his presence to the monastery.

A thin chain stretches from his chest toward the Mark in my palm.

He is afraid.

Not of Elara.

Not of me.

His fear is directed behind him.

Toward the thing hidden in the darkness.

Lucien smiles as though he can feel me examining him.

"And you must be Shin Sasaki."

I keep my marked hand closed.

"You know my name."

"You have been difficult to ignore."

His gaze moves across my damaged clothes, broken hand, and the blood drying around my neck.

"The foreign criminal who appeared from nowhere, stole my sister, challenged a Royal Blade, and filled western Asteria with rumors of death."

"I didn't steal her."

Elara looks toward me.

"That is the part you object to?"

"It keeps appearing on wanted notices."

Lucien's smile widens slightly.

Malrec pulls himself from the remains of the broken pillar.

Blood covers the side of his face, but he is still conscious.

The moment he sees Lucien, he lowers himself onto one knee.

"My prince."

Elara turns toward him.

"You know what he did to my father."

Malrec keeps his head lowered.

"I know what I was ordered to know."

"You heard Aldric."

"I heard the claims of a traitor."

Aldric raises his staff.

Blue symbols gather around the black circle.

"They are not claims."

Lucien looks toward him.

"Seal Master Aldric. Still hiding inside the ruins of your failed order."

"You corrupted the inheritance network."

"I improved it."

"You opened it to something beyond this world."

For the first time, Lucien's smile disappears.

The darkness behind his throne shifts.

Every candle in the monastery goes out.

When Lucien speaks again, his voice is quieter.

"You should be careful when discussing matters you do not understand."

"I understand that you are no longer alone inside your own body."

Malrec slowly raises his head.

Lucien's black eyes turn toward him.

The Royal Blade immediately looks down again.

Fear rises from him.

Not the controlled fear he felt when I damaged Nightfall.

This is deeper.

Older.

Malrec knows something is wrong with the prince.

He has chosen not to acknowledge it.

Lucien's attention returns to Elara.

"The kingdom needs you."

"You need me to surrender my claim."

"I need you to fulfill your responsibility."

"My responsibility is to free Father."

"Our father was willing to destroy Asteria to satisfy his conscience."

"He wanted to stop murdering innocent people."

"He wanted to dismantle the royal network without understanding what would happen afterward."

Lucien leans forward.

"The barriers around our borders would collapse. The enchanted farmland would die. The military seals protecting our cities would fail. Every kingdom surrounding us would recognize our weakness."

"So your answer was to imprison him?"

"My answer was to prevent millions from suffering because one man could no longer bear the weight of a crown."

Elara's silver mana spreads across the platform.

"You sound as though you believe that."

"I do."

Fear Sense confirms it.

Lucien is not lying about his reason.

That does not make his actions right.

It makes him more dangerous.

He believes they are necessary.

Aldric moves toward the platform.

"The network could have been dismantled slowly."

"And how many would have died while you searched for another solution?"

"Fewer than the number trapped beneath the palace."

"You cannot know that."

"Neither can you."

The black circle flickers.

Lucien presses his fingers against the throne.

Golden chains emerge from beneath his hand and wrap around his wrist.

The darkness behind him becomes still again.

He is not simply sitting on the throne.

He is connected to it.

Possibly trapped by it.

Lucien looks toward me.

"You refused the power beneath the palace."

I become still.

Elara glances at me.

"How does he know that?"

"The throne felt him," Lucien says. "It offered him more fear than any newly awakened Mark could contain."

"You were watching."

"Not at first."

The black veins beneath his crown move.

"Then you touched my network."

I feel the Mark burn.

Something reaches toward it from inside the black circle.

The presence is weaker than what I sensed beneath the palace, but it carries the same emptiness.

A message appears.

Unknown authority is examining the Mark of Dread.

Access denied.

Lucien's head tilts.

"You rejected it."

"I don't take power from prisoners."

"Fear is fear."

"No."

"Your Reaper disagrees."

The name silences the room.

Aldric steps in front of me.

"How do you know about the Reaper?"

Lucien's dark eyes remain fixed on mine.

"The throne remembers every power that has touched this world."

An image forms behind him.

Kael Veyr stands in the throne chamber three centuries earlier.

His armor is unbroken.

His purple Mark burns across his hand.

Royal soldiers surround him while people scream from inside the glass structures beneath the floor.

The image lasts only a moment.

Then it disappears.

"Kael came to Asteria seeking fear," Lucien says. "He discovered an endless source beneath the palace."

"And it destroyed him," I say.

"It revealed his potential."

"He was chained beneath a mountain for three hundred years."

"Because weaker men feared what he could become."

Aldric raises his staff toward the projection.

"Saint Orin imprisoned him because he was losing control."

"Saint Orin imprisoned him because Kael refused to obey the throne."

The black symbols spread farther across the monastery walls.

Blue sections of Aldric's wards begin disappearing.

The sealed space is being rewritten around us.

Aldric looks toward the damaged pillars.

"He is using the connection created when Elara's seal broke."

"Can you close it?" Mara asks.

"Yes."

Lucien smiles again.

"No."

Golden chains burst from the floor.

One wraps around Aldric's staff.

Another catches his ankle.

He strikes the first chain with blue energy, but it repairs immediately.

More chains rise around the central platform.

Mara forms silver blades and cuts through one.

Two replace it.

Elara raises both hands.

A wave of silver mana spreads from her body.

The chains near her turn white and collapse.

Lucien watches with interest.

"The inheritance has already begun accepting you again."

"I reject it."

"You cannot reject your blood."

"I can reject you."

The throne room behind Lucien shakes.

His fear increases.

The dark chain connecting him to my Mark becomes thicker.

He fears Elara's claim.

The throne does not fully belong to him.

Her freedom threatens his control.

I focus on the chain.

The eye in my palm opens.

Lucien's expression changes.

He can feel it.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

"Learning what frightens you."

The black symbols around us stop for a moment.

Lucien rises from the throne.

Golden chains pull against his arms and back.

He ignores them.

"You believe fear gives you control over me?"

"It gives me a connection."

I activate Terror Mark.

The eye in my palm flashes.

A black symbol travels through the projection.

It reaches Lucien's chest.

Then it stops.

A barrier of golden symbols appears around him.

Terror Mark resisted.

Target protected by a superior authority.

Lucien looks down at the fading symbol.

The darkness behind the throne moves closer.

A shape resembling a hand rests against the back of his seat.

It is too large to belong to anything human.

Lucien's fear disappears.

Not because he overcame it.

Because something swallowed it.

The chain connecting him to me turns black.

The Mark in my palm recoils.

Pain runs through my arm.

Warning: Terror Mark connection contaminated.

I close the ability immediately.

The chain breaks.

Lucien sits again.

"That power does not belong to you," he says.

"Neither does the throne."

His expression hardens.

The enormous shape behind him shifts.

A voice whispers beneath his.

"Everything belongs to the one capable of taking it."

The words do not come from Lucien.

Everyone in the monastery hears them.

Malrec rises from his kneeling position.

His face has gone pale.

"Your Highness?"

Lucien turns toward him.

"Bring Elara to the capital."

Malrec looks toward the destroyed monastery.

"Aldric's ritual removed her binding seal."

"I am aware."

"She cannot be controlled."

"Then break her legs."

Elara stares at him.

Malrec does not move.

Lucien's black eyes narrow.

"Was my command unclear?"

For the first time, the Royal Blade hesitates openly.

The soldiers outside the entrance can hear everything.

Fear Sense detects their confusion.

Their prince is ordering the kingdom's princess crippled.

The official story claimed Elara was an abducted victim.

The truth is becoming difficult to hide.

Malrec lowers his hand toward Nightfall, which remains on the floor near the entrance.

"I was ordered to recover her alive."

"And she will remain alive."

Lucien's voice grows colder.

"Obey."

A black symbol appears beneath Malrec's armor.

He gasps.

Golden chains become visible around his heart.

Elara steps forward.

"He sealed you too."

Malrec grabs his chest.

The symbol tightens.

His knees strike the floor.

Lucien watches without emotion.

"Every Royal Blade is bound to the throne."

Aldric destroys the chain holding his staff.

"Those seals were designed to ensure loyalty to the rightful monarch."

"I am the monarch."

"No," Elara says. "You are occupying his seat."

The golden chains around Malrec flicker.

For a moment, they turn silver.

Lucien looks toward his sister.

The throne shakes again.

Elara's words carry power.

Not ordinary mana.

Authority.

The inheritance network recognizes her rejection.

Malrec manages to lift his head.

His eyes move toward Elara.

"Give me an order."

She freezes.

"What?"

"The seal is confused."

His voice is strained.

"It recognizes both of you."

Lucien stands.

"Malrec."

The black symbol tightens.

Blood runs from beneath Malrec's armor.

Elara steps toward him.

"As Princess Elara Asteria, rightful heir recognized by the royal inheritance, I order you to resist him."

Silver light erupts from Malrec's chest.

The black symbol cracks.

Lucien's projection flickers.

A wave of fear spreads from the soldiers outside.

Dread received: 8

Dread received: 11

Dread received: 7

Malrec grabs Nightfall.

He uses the sword to force himself upright.

The cracks along its blade glow white.

Lucien stares at him.

"You would betray your king?"

Malrec breathes heavily.

"I serve Asteria."

"I am Asteria."

"No."

He looks toward Elara.

"The throne has not decided that."

Lucien's face becomes empty.

The darkness behind him expands.

"Then the throne will be corrected."

Black chains explode from the circle.

They pass through the monastery like spears.

Aldric raises a wall of blue symbols.

Most of the chains strike it.

Several pass through.

One wraps around Malrec's throat.

Another pierces his shoulder.

He is dragged toward the projection.

I catch his arm.

The force pulls both of us across the floor.

Malrec looks at me.

"Let go."

"You're more useful alive."

"I am beginning to dislike that phrase."

Death energy gathers around my hand.

I send it into the chain around his throat.

The black surface begins decaying.

Instead of collapsing, the chain absorbs the energy.

The empty presence inside it flows toward me.

The crack in my Mark burns.

Kael's memory fragment reacts.

A locked image flashes through my mind.

Kael standing between two worlds.

A black chain connects his Mark to the Reaper's realm.

He does not try to destroy it.

He cuts the space around it.

The memory disappears.

A new message appears.

Memory fragment partially accessed.

Compatible principle detected: Severance.

I understand without fully knowing how.

Death energy destroys what exists.

Kael learned to destroy connections.

Not the chain itself.

The bond allowing it to reach him.

I place my marked palm against the black chain.

Instead of focusing on its physical form, I search for where it connects.

One end leads to Malrec's seal.

The other leads through the projection.

Beyond Lucien.

Beyond the throne.

Toward the presence behind it.

The emptiness notices me.

A vast eye begins opening at the end of the connection.

I cut before it can fully see me.

"Sever."

The word leaves my mouth without thought.

A thin purple line appears across the chain.

There is no explosion.

No wave of energy.

The connection simply disappears.

The chain falls to the floor.

Before it touches the stone, it turns into black dust.

Malrec stumbles free.

New technique acquired: Dread Severance.

Dread Severance — Level 1

Separate a fear-based, soul-based, or supernatural connection. Effectiveness depends on the strength and understanding of the bond.

The eye in my palm closes halfway.

The technique consumed more energy than Death Arc.

My arm feels numb.

Lucien stares at the empty space where the chain had been.

The darkness behind him becomes violent.

"You should not know that technique."

"I'm learning quickly."

"Kael."

It is not a question.

He knows where the ability came from.

Lucien's black eyes move toward my palm.

"He placed something inside you."

"A memory."

"Give it to me."

The request sounds exactly like the Reaper's.

That is not reassuring.

"No."

Lucien raises one hand.

The entire monastery begins collapsing.

Black cracks spread across the sealed space.

Bookshelves tilt.

Floating staircases break apart.

Thousands of metal rings fall from the ceiling.

Aldric plants his staff against the platform.

"We need to close the throne connection now."

"How?" Elara asks.

"You must reject Lucien through the inheritance network."

"I already did."

"Not as his sister."

Aldric points toward the black circle.

"As his rival."

Elara looks at the throne.

The golden crown fused to Lucien's head.

The countless chains beneath him.

"You want me to claim the throne."

"I want you to force the network to recognize that he does not possess it completely."

Lucien's expression changes.

"Elara."

For the first time, he sounds like her brother.

Not a prince.

Not the voice of the throne.

"Elara, do not do this."

She looks toward him.

"You sealed Father."

"He left me no choice."

"You erased members of the royal court."

"They were conspiring to dismantle the kingdom."

"You ordered Caelan to hunt me."

"You ran."

"You put a seal around my soul."

"To protect you."

Elara's silver mana becomes brighter.

"No."

The word causes the entire sealed space to shake.

The golden chains around Lucien tighten.

He grips the sides of the throne.

The darkness behind him reaches toward Elara.

I move between them.

Dread Aura spreads from my body, but the presence has no ordinary fear.

It presses against the Mark.

Images fill my mind.

My execution.

The officers dragging me toward the chair.

The needle entering my arm.

The moment my heartbeat stopped.

Then the images change.

Elara dead beneath the royal palace.

Mara hanging from golden chains.

Aldric reduced to ash.

Malrec kneeling beside a broken sword.

Every person who has helped me dies because I brought the throne's attention to them.

The presence is attempting to frighten me.

The Mark absorbs part of the emotion.

Dread source detected: Self-generated fear.

Absorption unstable.

The energy enters me differently.

It is hot.

Poisonous.

The Dread Aura around my body flickers.

Lucien watches through the projection.

"You think fear only comes from others?"

The voice beneath his own returns.

"The deepest fear is the one carried inside the soul."

The visions become stronger.

I see myself returning to the Reaper's realm.

He is waiting.

A chain is already wrapped around my neck.

Kael stands behind him, empty and obedient.

I become the same.

Another weapon.

Another failed Raider.

The crack in my Mark spreads.

I hear the Reaper's voice from somewhere distant.

"Close the connection."

Then Kael's voice answers from inside the fragment.

"Face it."

Both of them want control.

One through ignorance.

The other through fear.

I look toward the execution chair inside the vision.

That moment already happened.

I died.

The throne cannot threaten me with it.

I walk toward the chair.

The officers turn.

Their faces are empty.

"You have no power here," one says.

"I didn't have power then either."

The restraints open.

I sit.

The needle appears in the officer's hand.

Fear rises inside me.

I allow myself to feel it.

Not absorb it.

Not hide from it.

Feel it.

"I was afraid," I say.

The vision becomes still.

"I died anyway."

The officer lowers the needle.

"So what happens now?"

I summon death energy around my damaged hand.

The scythe still cannot form, but its shape appears faintly within the smoke.

"Now I make sure it doesn't control me twice."

I cut through the execution chair.

The vision shatters.

I return to the monastery.

Black mist explodes from my body.

The corrupted fear burning inside the Mark is pushed out.

It gathers into a sphere above my palm.

I crush it.

Self-generated Dread rejected.

Mark stability increased.

Fear Sense has reached Level 3.

The presence behind Lucien pulls away.

For the first time, I sense something from it.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

That is enough to prove it can react.

Elara stands at the center of the platform.

Silver and gold light surround her body.

Aldric raises his staff.

"Speak your name and claim."

Lucien pulls against the chains binding him to the throne.

"Elara, listen to me."

She looks directly at him.

"I am Elara Selene Asteria, daughter of King Edric Asteria and Queen Selene Asteria."

The inheritance network responds.

Golden symbols appear across every wall.

The black corruption fights against them.

"I reject Lucien Asteria's claim to rule in our father's place."

The projection begins breaking apart.

Lucien reaches toward her.

"You do not understand what is coming."

"I understand what you did."

"I kept this kingdom alive."

"You turned it into a prison."

"Elara!"

She raises her hand.

Silver light gathers around her fingers.

"I claim my right to challenge for the throne."

The monastery disappears beneath a wave of gold.

For a moment, I see the entire kingdom.

Cities.

Villages.

Fortresses.

Farms protected by ancient magic.

Every royal seal activates at once.

Millions of people look upward as silver light crosses the sky.

Lucien's voice enters the network.

"She is a traitor."

Elara's voice follows.

"He is not the king."

The two declarations spread across Asteria.

Every soldier carrying a royal seal hears them.

Every noble connected to the court hears them.

Every city protected by the throne feels the inheritance divide.

Fear erupts across the kingdom.

Not a small amount.

An ocean.

The Mark opens.

Dark chains appear in every direction.

They connect to thousands of people who have heard stories of the World Raider and now believe I stand beside a rival heir.

Notifications fill my vision too quickly to read.

Dread received through reputation: 14

Dread received through reputation: 21

Dread received through rumor: 18

Dread received through royal network: 32

Dread received through royal network: 27

The numbers continue.

My total rises rapidly.

Dread: 1,294

Dread: 1,417

Dread: 1,583

The Mark begins pulling harder.

I close my hand.

I do not release Dread Aura.

I do not allow the fear to flood my mind.

I contain it.

The pressure is painful, but it belongs to me.

Not the Reaper.

Not the throne.

Mine.

The black circle above the platform collapses.

Lucien's face is the final thing to disappear.

His black eyes remain fixed on Elara.

"You have started a war."

She does not look away.

"No."

The connection closes.

"You did."

The projection vanishes.

Every corrupted symbol in the monastery explodes.

Aldric raises the last of his wards.

Blue light surrounds us as the sealed space begins falling apart.

"Move!" he shouts.

The floor splits.

Bookshelves collapse into darkness.

Mara grabs Elara's arm and pulls her from the platform.

Malrec uses Nightfall to support himself.

The golden seal around his heart has become silver, but cracks continue spreading across it.

I reach toward my soul weapon.

Smoke gathers around my hand.

This time, it does not disappear.

The scythe reforms slowly.

The handle is darker.

Purple lines extend across the entire weapon.

The blade remains cracked, but a second, smaller edge has begun forming along its back.

Soul weapon restoration complete.

Soul weapon has changed in response to Dread Severance.

Naming conditions partially fulfilled.

The ceiling falls.

I swing the scythe upward.

Death Arc tears through the collapsing stone, creating an opening.

Aldric points toward the rear of the hall.

"The emergency passage!"

A doorway appears between two broken shelves.

Mara and Elara run through it.

Malrec remains near the platform.

I grab his shoulder.

He pulls away.

"I can walk."

"You were stabbed by a magical chain."

"I have experienced worse."

"That's usually my line."

Another section of the ceiling collapses.

Malrec looks toward Nightfall.

The cracked blade is losing its dark glow.

"The prince will know I resisted."

"Are you worried?"

"Yes."

Fear Sense confirms it.

His fear is not for himself.

It is directed south.

Toward the capital.

"Someone you care about is there," I say.

His expression becomes cold.

"That does not concern you."

"It concerns whoever controls your loyalty."

Malrec pushes my hand away and enters the passage.

Aldric follows him.

I take one last look at the destroyed platform.

The black circle is gone.

But a small fragment of the throne's corruption remains on the floor.

It moves like a drop of living ink.

The eye in my palm opens.

A message appears.

Fragment of unknown authority detected.

Absorb?

I almost laugh.

The answer is obvious.

"No."

I swing the scythe.

The fragment splits apart.

Dread Severance activates through the blade.

A purple line cuts across the black substance.

The connection behind it disappears.

The fragment turns to dust.

Somewhere beyond the world, something notices.

A sound enters my mind.

Not a voice.

A promise.

It will remember me.

I turn and enter the emergency passage as the monastery collapses behind me.

The doorway seals.

Darkness surrounds us.

Aldric creates a small blue light above his staff.

The passage slopes downward through the mountain.

Elara stands several feet ahead.

She is breathing heavily, but the mark around her neck is completely gone.

For the first time since I met her, no chain surrounds her soul.

Mara places a hand on her shoulder.

"You challenged Lucien before the entire royal network."

"I know."

"Half the kingdom will call you the rightful heir."

"The other half will call me a traitor."

Malrec leans against the wall.

"The army will divide."

Aldric looks toward him.

"How many Royal Blades will support Lucien?"

"Three without question."

"And the others?"

"Two serve the throne rather than the prince. They may wait for proof."

"That accounts for five," I say.

Malrec's expression darkens.

"The sixth is Prince Caelan."

"And the seventh?"

No one answers.

Fear Sense detects a small shift from Malrec.

"The seventh disappeared years ago," Elara says.

Malrec looks toward her.

"That is the official story."

"Where is the real one?"

"I do not know."

He is telling the truth.

A distant explosion travels through the mountain.

The monastery has fully collapsed.

Dust falls from the passage ceiling.

Aldric begins walking.

"This tunnel exits north of the royal patrols. We must reach the lower valley before they surround the mountain."

Elara remains still.

"What happens now?"

Mara looks toward her.

"You claimed the throne."

"I challenged for it."

"In Asteria, there is little difference."

Malrec grips Nightfall.

"Lucien will declare open rebellion before sunrise."

Aldric nods.

"Every noble house will be forced to choose."

Elara looks toward me.

"You wanted chaos."

I open my status.

A succession war.

Prince Lucien controls the throne and the capital.

Prince Caelan commands the army.

Elara possesses the stronger claim but has no soldiers, territory, or political support.

All she has is a former innkeeper, an exiled seal master, a wounded Royal Blade, and me.

I close the status.

"Chaos is a beginning."

Elara watches me carefully.

"And what comes after it?"

The fear of an entire kingdom continues flowing toward the Mark.

I rest the altered scythe against my shoulder.

"Now we decide who gets to control it."
