Ash falls over Wren's Hollow like gray snow.
Each flake carries a faint heat. When one lands on the wooden platform beside me, a thin line of smoke rises from the surface.
The red light above the western mountains continues growing.
Less than an hour.
Possibly much less.
Commander Soren stands beneath Elara's new banner and shouts orders across the square.
"Move every child and injured villager to the eastern quarry! Take only food, water, and blankets. Leave everything else!"
His soldiers scatter through the village.
Some help families gather their belongings. Others form lines from the well to the burning houses.
The villagers obey, but panic slows everything.
People run in different directions.
Parents call for missing children.
Farm animals pull against ropes as ash lands on their backs.
Fear fills the village.
The Mark inside my chest absorbs it steadily.

I close the notifications.
There is too much happening to watch every number.
Elara stands beside Soren, her silver hair uncovered and her new banner flying above her.
A silver lion surrounded by open wings and a broken chain.
It is a good symbol.
Memorable.
Symbols matter when building fear.
They probably matter when building loyalty too.
Malrec approaches me with Nightfall resting against his shoulder.
The sword is still cracked from our fights, but the black mana wrapped around it has grown more stable.
"You appear pleased," he says.
"I'm thinking."
"That usually makes you smile?"
"Only when the idea is dangerous."
"That is what I feared."
The Mark absorbs a faint amount from him.
Dread received: 1
Malrec notices my attention shift toward his chest.
"Do not collect my fear while I am attempting to help you."
"I don't control every point."
"Learn."
I look toward the approaching red light.
"What exactly can the Ash Saint do?"
Malrec's expression becomes serious.
"His name is Aurelius Vane. He was once a priest of the Radiant Temple."
"Once?"
"He burned the temple and everyone inside it."
"That seems like a strange career change."
"He claimed the gods had abandoned Asteria and that only fire could purify what remained."
"And Lucien decided to employ him?"
"King Edric imprisoned him beneath the capital."
Malrec glances toward Elara.
"Prince Lucien released him six months ago."
"Before Elara escaped."
"Yes."
Elara joins us after sending another group of villagers toward the quarry.
"What does Lucien want with someone like that?"
"The Ash Saint cannot be controlled through an ordinary obedience seal," Malrec says. "But Lucien promised him something."
"What?"
"I do not know."
Fear Sense confirms it.
Malrec is telling the truth.
He does know something else, though.
His fear is connected to a memory of flames stretching higher than city walls.
"What happened to the rebellious city?" I ask.
Malrec becomes still.
"Twelve years ago, the city of Morvale refused to pay increased tribute after a failed harvest. The governor arrested the royal collectors."
"And they sent Aurelius."
"He was not called the Ash Saint then."
Malrec looks toward the smoke rising from Wren's Hollow.
"He entered the city alone. By sunrise, the walls had melted."
Elara's face loses color.
"How many survived?"
"Seven."
"Out of how many?"
"Nearly twenty thousand."
The nearby soldiers overhear him.
Their fear surges.

Commander Soren looks toward the mountains.
"Why were we never told?"
"The Crown announced that Morvale was destroyed by a volcanic eruption."
"There are no volcanoes near Morvale."
"Exactly."
Soren's men exchange uneasy looks.
This is not helping morale.
It is helping me.
That does not mean I enjoy it.
I dismiss the latest notifications and examine the village.
Most homes are wooden.
The central square is stone, but not enough to protect hundreds of people.
The quarry east of the village is surrounded by rock and lies below ground level.
It is the best shelter available.
Not good enough if Aurelius can melt city walls.
"How does his magic work?" I ask.
Malrec looks toward the falling ash.
"This is the beginning of it."
"He makes ash?"
"He spreads it."
"What happens when there is enough?"
"The Ash Domain forms."
Elara touches one of the flakes landing on her sleeve.
Silver mana covers her fingertips before the heat reaches her skin.
"What does the domain do?"
"Everything inside it becomes fuel."
I look at the houses.
"The wood."
"The ground."
"The air."
Malrec's expression darkens.
"People."
The falling ash suddenly feels more threatening.
It is not the attack.
It is preparation.
Aurelius is covering the village before he arrives.
I open my marked palm.
The purple eye looks toward the sky.
Fear Sense shows no emotion inside the ash.
But another connection is visible.
Thousands of thin red threads stretch from the flakes toward the light above the mountains.
The ash is linked to Aurelius.
I reach toward the nearest thread with Dread Severance.
The connection is faint.
Simple.
"Sever."
A purple line passes through it.
The ash flake turns cold.
Then it disappears.
Malrec sees it.
"You separated the ash from him."
"One piece."
He looks upward.
Millions more descend from the sky.
"Can you do all of them?"
"Probably not without destroying my weapon or my arm."
"Then we need another solution."
I watch the threads.
They are separate near the ground, but farther above the village, they gather into thicker lines.
Those lines meet somewhere in the clouds.
A network.
Destroying every connection would be impossible.
Destroying the point where they combine may not be.
"Where is the highest building?" I ask.
Soren points toward a stone watchtower near the western edge of the village.
"Old militia tower. It hasn't been used in years."
"How tall?"
"About eighty feet."
"That should be enough."
Elara looks toward me.
"What are you planning?"
"To cut the ash off before the domain forms."
Malrec shakes his head.
"Aurelius will arrive before you finish studying it."
"I don't need to understand everything."
"That attitude is going to kill you."
"It hasn't yet."
"It almost has several times."
"Then it is becoming experienced."
Elara steps between us.
"What do you need?"
I point toward the tower.
"Get everyone out of the village."
"We're already doing that."
"Faster."
"There are hundreds of people."
"Leave soldiers who can fight. Everyone else goes to the quarry."
"And then?"
"Raise a barrier around it."
Elara looks toward the eastern road.
"I cannot protect the entire quarry alone."
"Aldric can help when he arrives."
"We do not know how far behind he is."
I use Fear Sense.
Far to the east, I detect two familiar connections moving toward us.
Aldric and Mara.
They are closer than expected.
"They'll be here soon."
Elara does not ask how I know.
She has become used to the ability.
Malrec studies the red light.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Can Nightfall cut magic?"
"It severs mana."
"Can it cut fire?"
"If the fire is created by mana."
"Good."
"That does not mean I can cut an entire sky."
"You only need to stop anything that reaches the quarry."
"And you?"
"I'll make sure he looks at me instead."
Elara's expression becomes annoyed.
"That is not a plan."
"It worked with Malrec."
Malrec looks toward her.
"It did not."
"He's standing with us now."
"I was not defeated."
"You still changed sides."
"My oath changed."
"Close enough."
Malrec turns away before the argument continues.
The red light grows brighter.
We have less time than I thought.
Commander Soren climbs onto the platform.
"The eastern road is clear. First group is moving!"
Elara joins him.
Her voice carries through the square with the help of silver mana.
"Everyone will leave in groups of fifty. Soldiers will escort you to the quarry. Do not stop for possessions. Do not return to your homes."
A man near the crowd raises his voice.
"What happens to the village?"
Elara looks toward the burning houses.
"I don't know."
Fear spreads.
She continues before it becomes panic.
"But I will not allow Lucien to erase you."
The villagers stare at her.
Some believe her.
Some want to.
Others look toward the ash and see only another royal promise.
The woman who was struck earlier steps forward.
Her cheek is still swollen.
"My husband died serving King Edric."
Elara lowers her head slightly.
"I'm sorry."
"He said the royal family protected us."
The woman looks toward the new banner.
"Was that ever true?"
Elara does not give the easy answer.
"Sometimes."
The square becomes quiet.
"Not often enough," she continues. "My family benefited from a system built on people who were never allowed to choose. I cannot change what happened to your husband."
Silver light spreads around her.
"But I can choose what I do now."
The woman looks toward the red light.
"You'll stay?"
"Yes."
Even I can tell Elara is afraid.
Her hands tremble slightly.
Her voice does not.
The woman nods and joins the line toward the quarry.
The others follow.
Their fear remains.
Something else begins growing beside it.
Trust.
The Mark cannot absorb that emotion.
But I can still sense its effect.
The fear directed toward Elara weakens.
The fear directed toward Lucien grows stronger.
Her banner rises higher above the square.
A notification appears.
Faction influence increased.
Wren's Hollow allegiance: Uncertain → Supportive
Interesting.
The system is tracking more than Dread now.
I close the message and begin walking toward the tower.
Elara catches my arm.
"Shin."
"What?"
"If you cannot stop him, leave."
"That would make your first territory disappear."
"I mean it."
"So do I."
"You don't owe these people your life."
I look toward the village.
The soldiers tearing down fences to clear the evacuation route.
The families carrying children through the ash.
The black smoke rising from homes that belonged to people who refused to kneel.
"I didn't ask anyone to help me when I died."
Elara's grip loosens.
"But I wanted someone to."
For a moment, she says nothing.
Then she takes the silver chain from around her wrist.
A small crystal hangs from it.
"What is that?"
"A royal signal stone."
She presses it into my hand.
"It is linked to my mana. If it breaks, I will know."
"That sounds like a terrible way to learn I'm dead."
"It will also allow me to strengthen you from a distance."
"You can do that?"
"A little."
"Why didn't you do it during the other fights?"
"I was poisoned, sealed, or unconscious during most of them."
"That seems fair."
I close my fingers around the crystal.
Warm silver mana enters my hand.
The Mark reacts but does not absorb it.
"I'll return it."
"You had better."
Elara walks back toward the square.
Malrec waits beside the road leading toward the tower.
"You have a talent for making people care whether you survive," he says.
"That sounds useful."
"It creates weaknesses."
"Your family in the capital?"
His expression darkens.
"Exactly."
We continue toward the watchtower.
The old structure leans slightly to one side. Vines cover the lower stones, and the wooden staircase inside has partially collapsed.
I jump through the opening and land on the first intact platform.
Malrec follows with far less effort than his injuries should allow.
"You are recovering quickly," I say.
"Royal Blades are modified by the throne."
"Modified?"
"Reinforced bones. Expanded mana channels. Accelerated healing."
"That sounds painful."
"It was."
"Did you agree to it?"
Malrec looks upward.
"No."
Another reason for him to hate the throne.
We climb.
Near the top, the ash becomes thick enough that the village below appears blurred.
Red threads cover the sky.
They converge above us into several glowing lines.
Those lines stretch toward Aurelius.
He is close.
Fear Sense begins detecting something within the approaching light.
Not fear.
Joy.
The Ash Saint is excited.
"He knows we're here," I say.
Malrec draws Nightfall.
"He always knows where his ash falls."
A voice travels through the sky.
Soft.
Almost peaceful.
"Lord Malrec."
The red light stops above the western fields.
A human figure stands inside it.
He is still far away, yet his voice reaches every corner of the village.
"You have betrayed the Crown."
Malrec rests Nightfall against his shoulder.
"The Crown betrayed itself."
Aurelius laughs.
Ash swirls around him.
"Spoken like a man who has finally discovered his chains."
His attention moves toward me.
Even from this distance, I feel it.
The air becomes hotter.
"And the creature called the World Raider."
"I've been called worse."
"You carry the scent of a dead god."
"The Reaper would probably object to that description."
"The Reaper?"
Aurelius's joy changes.
For the first time, I sense uncertainty.
He knows something.
Not enough to fear the name.
Enough to recognize it.
The red threads in the sky tighten.
"So the door has opened again."
Malrec glances toward me.
"What does he mean?"
"I don't know."
Aurelius spreads both arms.
His clothing resembles the white robes of a priest, but every edge has been burned black.
A golden halo floats behind his head.
Half of it is missing.
The exposed side of his face is covered in deep burns.
The other side appears almost peaceful.
"You were sent to collect fear," he says.
"People keep learning too much about me."
"Fear is prayer stripped of hope."
The ash around him forms wings.
"Your master and mine are not so different."
Elara's voice enters my thoughts through the signal stone.
Shin, can you hear me?
"Unfortunately."
There is a pause.
You could have answered normally.
"The Ash Saint knows about World Raiders."
Malrec looks at the crystal in my hand.
Elara responds.
Ask him how.
"That doesn't seem like something he'll answer honestly."
Aurelius smiles.
"You carry another voice."
He can sense Elara's magic.
His gaze moves toward the quarry.
The red threads connected to the ash begin shifting east.
"No," I say.
Aurelius lowers one hand.
Every flake above the evacuation route ignites.
The sky becomes red.
"Nightfall!" Malrec shouts.
He swings his sword.
A black line cuts through the burning cloud.
The flames separate.
For a few seconds, a clear path opens above the villagers.
Then the ash reconnects.
The fire continues spreading.
I focus on the thicker red lines.
Dread Severance gathers along my scythe.
The weapon is still damaged.
Soul integrity remains below half.
One large cut may break it again.
I raise it anyway.
Purple light forms along the second edge.
"Sever."
The blade passes through the strongest connection above the tower.
A purple line travels into the clouds.
The red thread splits.
Thousands of burning ash flakes turn gray at once.
The fire above the evacuation road disappears.
The villagers continue running.
Aurelius looks toward me.
His smile widens.
"Beautiful."
The remaining red threads move.
They twist around the severed connection and repair it.
Slower than before.
But they repair.
"I can cut them," I say.
Malrec watches the sky.
"Not faster than he creates them."
Aurelius begins walking through the air.
Each step leaves a burning footprint above the fields.
The ground beneath him dries and cracks.
Crops turn to ash.
"I have spent years wondering whether anyone else could see the bonds beneath miracles," he says.
I tighten my grip on the scythe.
"What god gave you your power?"
"The first one who answered."
"That isn't a name."
"Names create limits."
Aurelius moves closer.
The heat becomes painful.
The stone tower beneath us begins warming.
"My god lives within flame, memory, and sacrifice."
Black shapes move inside the golden halo behind him.
Not fire.
Chains.
The same corrupted emptiness connected to the throne.
"You're connected to it too," I say.
Aurelius places a hand against his chest.
Beneath his robes, something pulses red.
"I was chosen."
"You were used."
The joy on his face disappears.
For one moment, anger replaces it.
The ash reacts.
Every remaining roof in the village ignites.
Elara's voice enters my thoughts.
Shin!
"I know."
Commander Soren's soldiers rush between the buildings.
Most villagers have reached the quarry, but dozens remain in the eastern streets.
Aurelius continues walking.
"You speak with the certainty of someone newly awakened."
"I met someone who was chosen before me."
His steps stop.
"Who?"
"Kael Veyr."
The temperature drops.
Not completely.
Enough to notice.
Aurelius's expression becomes still.
"The Black Calamity."
"He said our power comes from the same place."
"Kael rejected ascension."
"He called it slavery."
The Ash Saint's fear finally appears.
A thin red-gray chain connects his heart to my Mark.
He is not afraid of Kael.
He is afraid that Kael may have been right.
Dread received: 9
Aurelius looks down at his own chest.
He felt the loss.
His eyes narrow.
"You consumed my doubt."
"You produced fear."
"I do not fear you."
"Not yet."
Aurelius raises one hand.
A spear of white fire forms above him.
It is so bright that the sky around it turns dark.
Malrec steps in front of me.
"Move."
"What?"
"That flame burns souls."
"And you plan to block it?"
"Nightfall was created to kill Royal Blades."
"That seems poorly planned by the Crown."
"The king did not trust his own weapons."
Aurelius throws the spear.
Malrec swings Nightfall.
The black blade collides with the white fire.
The entire tower shakes.
Stone melts beneath our feet.
Malrec releases a shout as the flames push him backward.
Cracks spread across Nightfall.
I place my scythe against the side of the spear.
Death energy and Dread Severance enter the flame.
There are too many connections inside it.
Mana.
Heat.
Aurelius's soul.
Something beyond him.
I search for the simplest one.
The connection controlling its direction.
"Sever."
The purple edge cuts through it.
The spear changes course.
It passes beside the tower and strikes an empty field.
White fire expands across the ground.
For a moment, the entire western horizon disappears.
When the light fades, a glass crater remains.
Malrec looks toward it.
"That would have killed us."
"Probably."
"Stop sounding pleased."
"I learned something."
"The village will not survive many lessons."
Aurelius descends toward the tower.
His ash wings spread behind him.
The heat cracks the upper stones.
I release Dread Aura.
Dark pressure meets the fire.
The two forces collide in the air.
Aurelius does not freeze.
He does not retreat.
But his smile fades.
Fear Sense reaches deeper.
His confidence is enormous.
So is the fear hidden beneath it.
Aurelius fears silence.
Cold.
Dark places without flame.
He fears being abandoned by whatever answered him.
I apply Terror Mark.
The black symbol travels toward his chest.
The golden halo blocks it.
Terror Mark resisted.
Target protected by a superior authority.
The same message I received from Lucien.
Aurelius laughs.
"You cannot touch what belongs to the Flame Beyond."
So it has a name.
Or a title.
The Flame Beyond.
"The throne calls it something else," I say.
"The throne holds only a fragment of its light."
"It looked more like darkness."
"Fire appears dark to those who cannot endure it."
He lands on the tower.
Stone liquefies beneath his bare feet.
Malrec attacks immediately.
Nightfall cuts toward Aurelius's neck.
The Ash Saint raises one finger.
The blade stops.
Flame wraps around the metal.
The black mana surrounding Nightfall ignites.
Malrec tries to pull it away.
Aurelius closes his hand.
The sword begins turning red.
I swing my scythe toward his side.
An ash wing blocks the blade.
The particles harden like metal.
Aurelius turns.
His palm strikes my chest.
Heat enters my body.
Not around me.
Inside me.
My blood begins boiling.
I fall from the tower.
The village spins beneath me.
I summon death energy around my body, trying to smother the flame.
It continues burning.
The connection leads upward.
Back to Aurelius.
I press my marked palm against my chest.
"Sever."
The internal flame disconnects.
It disappears.
I hit the roof of a house.
Wood breaks beneath me.
I fall through the ceiling and crash onto a table.
Everything hurts.
A notification appears.
Dread Severance proficiency increased.
Warning: Repeated use is damaging the Mark.
The crack across the eye in my palm has grown.
I stand.
The house is empty.
Everyone living here must have evacuated.
Good.
The ceiling above me glows red.
Malrec falls through it.
He lands on the floor beside me.
Nightfall is still in his hand, but half of its blade has melted.
"You look worse," I say.
"You fell first."
"That doesn't mean anything."
Aurelius descends through the burning roof.
His ash wings brush against the walls.
The entire house catches fire.
Malrec forces himself upright.
"We cannot defeat him here."
"I noticed."
"Then retreat."
"The quarry is behind us."
Aurelius looks toward the eastern edge of the village.
The last groups of civilians are entering the stone passage.
"They have gathered neatly," he says.
"That was not for your convenience."
"It will make their purification faster."
Anger enters Malrec's fear.
He raises the remains of Nightfall.
Aurelius looks at him almost kindly.
"You were shaped into a weapon and still believe you are a man."
Malrec charges.
Their weapons collide.
Aurelius catches the broken blade between his palms.
Fire runs into Malrec's arms.
His armor begins glowing.
I move behind the Ash Saint.
The scythe's curved blade hooks around his golden halo.
The weapon screams against it.
Not a physical sound.
Something inside my soul weapon is reacting.
The purple edge cuts into the halo.
Aurelius releases Nightfall and turns.
Fear appears in his eyes.
Real fear.
The halo is important.
Dread received: 18
I pull harder.
The golden circle cracks.
Aurelius strikes me with his wing.
Ash cuts across my body like thousands of blades.
I crash through the wall and land in the street.
Blood covers my coat.
The scythe remains in my hand.
A small golden fragment is hooked around its blade.
The fragment burns without heat.
A message appears.
Fragment of foreign authority acquired.
Compatibility: Hostile
Absorb?
"No."
The Mark has offered that option too often.
I direct Dread Severance through the fragment.
The connection leads toward Aurelius.
Then beyond him.
The Flame Beyond notices me.
A red eye opens somewhere outside the world.
The same vast scale as the darkness behind the Reaper.
But this presence burns.
It is hunger given light.
It pulls on the fragment.
I cut the connection.
The gold turns black.
Then crumbles.
Aurelius screams.
The sound shakes every burning house.
His halo flickers.
One ash wing collapses.
The fires throughout the village weaken.
Malrec steps into the street.
His armor smokes.
"You damaged his source."
"Part of it."
Aurelius emerges through the broken house.
His peaceful expression is gone.
Fire covers his burned side.
The other half of his face begins cracking.
"You severed its blessing."
"It wasn't yours."
"It chose me."
"It protected itself through you."
His fear becomes stronger.
The Mark absorbs it.
Dread received: 24
Dread received: 19
Aurelius looks toward the quarry.
His remaining wing spreads.
"If the village burns, fear will restore what you damaged."
He launches himself into the air.
Malrec moves to follow, but his legs give out.
I catch him.
"Can you stand?"
"Not quickly enough."
The Ash Saint flies east.
Toward Elara.
Toward hundreds of villagers trapped inside the quarry.
The signal stone becomes hot in my hand.
Elara's voice enters my thoughts.
He's coming.
"I know."
The barrier isn't ready.
Aldric and Mara have reached the quarry, but the silver and blue dome above it is incomplete.
The Ash Saint is faster than I am.
Under ordinary conditions.
I look toward the chains of fear surrounding the village.
Thousands connect people to Aurelius.
Every villager knows who is approaching.
Every soldier remembers what happened to Morvale.
The fear pours into my Mark.
I have been containing it since the fight began.
My Dread total rises.
Dread: 1,906
Dread: 2,014
Dread: 2,137
The Mark pulses painfully.
I activate Dread Aura.
Not around the village.
Around myself.
The accumulated fear compresses against my body.
Dark mist forms behind my shoulders.
For a moment, it resembles wings.
A notification appears.
Dread Aura application altered.
New technique developing.
I focus the pressure downward.
The street cracks.
My body launches into the air.
Not flight.
More like being thrown by my own power.
I pass above the burning roofs.
The quarry appears ahead.
Aurelius is already descending toward it.
White fire gathers between his hands.
The barrier below flickers.
Elara stands at its center, both arms raised.
Aldric holds the eastern side.
Mara and Commander Soren anchor the others.
They will not survive the attack.
I compress Dread Aura again.
The dark mist pushes me faster.
New technique acquired: Dread Step.
Dread Step — Level 1
Release compressed Dread to move explosively through a short distance. Repeated use may damage the body.
The technique tears muscles in my legs.
I ignore it.
The distance closes.
Aurelius releases the fire.
A white sphere drops toward the quarry.
I use Dread Step again.
My body moves between one heartbeat and the next.
I appear beneath the attack.
The scythe rises.
Death energy covers one edge.
Dread Severance covers the other.
I cannot destroy the fire.
I cannot redirect something this large.
But I can cut the bond between Aurelius and the spell.
The connection is thicker than the village road.
It carries mana, authority, and fear.
I swing.
"Sever."
The purple edge enters the white sphere.
Pain explodes through my Mark.
The crack across my palm reaches my wrist.
The soul weapon breaks along its center.
For one moment, nothing happens.
Then the white fire stops.
It hangs above the quarry.
Aurelius looks down at me.
"What did you do?"
"I took it away from you."
The connection breaks.
The fire has no command.
No direction.
No target.
It expands.
I use the last of the movement stored inside Dread Aura and strike it from below with Death Arc.
The white sphere rises.
It travels back toward the Ash Saint.
Aurelius raises both wings.
The fire collides with him.
The sky becomes white.
The explosion spreads across the clouds.
Ash vanishes for miles.
A shock wave hits the quarry barrier.
The silver and blue dome bends but remains intact.
I fall.
My scythe dissolves before I reach the ground.
The Mark refuses to summon it again.
Elara drops the barrier around one section and catches me with silver mana.
My fall slows.
I still hit the stone hard enough to crack it.
Elara runs toward me.
"Shin!"
"I'm alive."
"You don't know that yet."
"That doesn't make sense."
She kneels beside me and examines my marked hand.
The purple eye is split by a black crack.
Blood runs from it like a wound.
Aldric approaches.
His face becomes grim.
"You damaged the Mark itself."
"It was already cracked."
"This is worse."
Above us, the white light fades.
For several seconds, nothing remains of Aurelius.
The villagers begin whispering.
Some cheer.
Malrec reaches the edge of the quarry, supported by two soldiers.
"He is not dead."
The cheering stops.
Ash begins gathering in the sky.
Every particle pulled from the burned village rises.
The cloud twists into a human shape.
Bones form first.
Then muscle.
Then skin covered in burns.
Aurelius reforms above the quarry.
His halo is smaller.
One wing is gone.
But he is alive.
His fear has changed into rage.
The Mark absorbs it.
Dread received: 47
Aurelius looks down at me.
"You cut the Flame Beyond."
"I cut its connection to you."
"You touched eternity with a stolen knife."
"It still worked."
Fire gathers around him again.
Less than before.
Still enough to kill everyone here.
Aldric raises his staff.
"We cannot survive another strike."
Elara stands between me and the sky.
Her silver mana flickers from exhaustion.
Soren's soldiers form a line around the villagers.
They know their shields are useless.
They raise them anyway.
Aurelius watches.
Then he smiles.
Not peacefully.
Hungrily.
"The fear here is magnificent."
The Mark inside my chest agrees.
That thought frightens me more than Aurelius does.
The broken eye in my palm opens.
A new notification appears.
High-density Dread threshold reached.
Evolution available.
Current Rank: Dreadborn
Possible evolution: Dread Knight
Requirement: Claim a weapon, banner, or territory through fear.
I look toward Elara's banner.
It has been planted at the entrance to the quarry.
The silver lion and broken chain move in the hot wind.
This territory has already been claimed.
Not by me.
By Elara.
The system offers another message.
Alternative evolution path detected.
Become the terror protecting another's claim.
Possible evolution: Dread Warden
Requirement: Cause a superior enemy to retreat from allied territory.
Aurelius raises both hands.
A second sun forms above him.
My soul weapon is broken.
My legs are damaged.
The Mark itself is splitting apart.
I cannot defeat him.
But the evolution does not require victory.
Only retreat.
I force myself to stand.
Elara looks toward me.
"What are you doing?"
"Protecting your territory."
"You can barely move."
"I only need him to believe staying is worse."
Aurelius hears me.
"You intend to frighten a saint?"
I open my damaged palm.
The cracked purple eye looks directly at him.
"No."
The Dread Aura spreads across the quarry.
Every villager feels it.
Every soldier.
Every frightened person connected to the World Raider throughout western Asteria.
I do not direct their fear toward themselves.
I gather the story they already believe.
The man who survived execution.
The foreign mage who defeated Varek.
The creature who challenged Malrec.
The World Raider who severed royal seals and stole a princess from the throne.
Rumor becomes pressure.
Pressure becomes presence.
Behind me, the dark mist rises into the shape of something enormous.
A hood.
Skeletal hands.
A scythe large enough to cut the sky.
It resembles the Reaper.
But the face beneath the hood is mine.
Aurelius's smile disappears.
His spell flickers.
The people beneath the barrier look upward.
Their fear increases.
Not of the Ash Saint.
Of what stands behind me.
I focus all of it on Aurelius.
The Terror Mark travels through the Dread Aura.
His damaged halo tries to block it.
The mark passes through the crack I created.
A black symbol forms over his heart.
Terror Mark applied.
Aurelius becomes still.
I activate it.
His eyes widen.
"What do you see?" I ask.
The fire above him weakens.
The Ash Saint looks beyond the quarry.
Beyond the village.
Perhaps beyond the world.
His remaining wing trembles.
"No."
I do not know what the Terror Mark is showing him.
But I can sense the direction of his fear.
Not toward me.
Not toward death.
Toward the Flame Beyond.
He sees what waits for him if he fails.
Or perhaps what waits if he succeeds.
His second sun collapses.
The fire returns to his body.
Aurelius backs away through the sky.
Malrec stares upward.
"He's retreating."
The villagers begin murmuring.
Aurelius's fear becomes rage again, but the Terror Mark continues pushing against it.
He points toward me.
"This village will burn."
"Not today."
"I will return."
"Then I'll cut more than your halo."
His fear surges.
Dread received: 63
Aurelius turns west.
His body becomes a stream of ash and fire.
It disappears into the clouds.
The heat over Wren's Hollow begins fading.
The remaining flames continue burning, but the domain is gone.
Ash falls normally.
Cold.
Dead.
A message fills my vision.
Superior enemy has retreated from allied territory.
Alternative evolution requirements fulfilled.
Dreadborn → Dread Warden evolution available.
Accept evolution?
The villagers stare at the empty sky.
Then at me.
No one speaks.
Elara stands beneath the banner, silver light fading around her hands.
She looks at the damaged village, the soldiers, and the people gathered inside the quarry.
Her first territory survived.
Barely.
She turns toward me.
"You scared him away."
"That was the goal."
My vision darkens.
The Mark's question remains.
Accept evolution?
I try to remain standing.
My body refuses.
As I fall, Elara catches me.
"Shin."
The last thing I see is the banner of the broken chain rising above us.
I accept.
