Yun Canghai knelt on one knee before the throne.

He reached into his robes and pulled out a heavy, ancient-looking box.

He opened it, revealing the Demon Emperor's Seal.

It glowed with a faint, warm light.

He held the box out to her with both hands.

"I have carried this for a long time,"

Yun Canghai said. His voice was heavy with regret.

"I am sorry, Your Majesty. I failed you. I couldn't protect you and your father."

Caiyi stood up and walked down the steps.

She gently placed her hand on his, covering the box.

"Stand up, Grandfather,"

She said softly.

"You didn't fail. You survived. You kept our family's honor alive when everyone else gave up. You have nothing to be sorry for."

Yun Canghai looked up at her. His eyes were bright with tears.

"I thought I had lost everything,"

He whispered.

"You lost nothing,"

Caiyi replied, taking the seal.

"You are here. We are together. That is all that matters."

She turned to Sam, who was waiting near the hall doors.

"Let us go,"

She told him.

The journey to the Lightning Flame Valley was short.

They stood before a massive stone gate carved with the image of a giant bird.

Caiyi stepped forward. She pressed the Seal against the center of the gate.

The stone groaned and began to glow. A burst of intense heat rushed out from the opening.

"The valley is on the other side,"

Sam said, stepping aside to let her lead.

"The spirit of the Golden Crow is waiting for its true Empress."

Caiyi took a deep breath. She looked at Yun Canghai and Sam one last time.

"Whatever happens,"

She said, her voice steady and brave,

"I will come back stronger for all of you."

She walked into the fire, and the massive gates closed shut behind her.

Inside the valley, the fire was not hot. It felt like a warm, loving embrace.

A giant bird made of golden flames appeared before Caiyi.

It bowed its head, and the fire merged into her skin.

Caiyi walked out of the gates an hour later.

Her eyes glowed with a soft, golden light.

The curse that had haunted her family for a hundred years was gone.

She saw Sam standing there, waiting patiently.

Caiyi ran to him.

She hugged him.

"You gave me a life I thought was impossible,"

She said, her voice shaking with emotion.

"I have no way to pay you back. I want to build a statue of you in the center of the capital. I want to tell every soul in this realm that you are our savior."

"You don't need to do that,"

Sam smiled.

"I just wanted to see you stand on your own two feet. You are the Empress now. That is enough for me."

Caiyi looked at him, her eyes searching his face.

"Must you go?"

She asked, her voice quiet.

"Stay. Rule by my side. I would trust you with my life."

Sam patted her shoulder gently.

"I have others waiting for me,"

He explained.

"I have been away for too long."

Caiyi nodded.

She understood.

She reached out and touched his hand, holding it for one last second.

"Then go,"

She whispered.

"But please, know this. You are always welcome in my kingdom. You will always be the friend I never thought I would find."

Caiyi didn't let go of his hand.

She looked at him with eyes that were full of pain.

She was terrified of the silence that would follow when he left.

Sam saw the longing in her expression.

He knew how she felt. He didn't want to leave her with a broken heart.

"You think this is goodbye forever,"

Sam said gently.

"But it is not."

He stepped closer to her. He did not use fancy words.

He just leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.

It was a soft, warm promise.

Caiyi went completely still.

Her eyes widened in shock, but she did not pull away.

She slowly closed her eyes and leaned into him, letting the feeling wash over her.

When he pulled back, her face was flushed and she was breathing fast.

"I will come back,"

Sam told her.

"I can travel here whenever I want. You and I share a bond that does not break."

Caiyi touched her lips, looking at him with wonder.

"You promise?"

She whispered.

"I promise,"

Sam said.

"You are an Empress now, and you carry a heavy crown. But you don't have to carry it alone. If you want, you can be part of my life. My world is big, and there is always room for a queen like you."

Caiyi looked at him, surprised. She knew that in this world, powerful men often had many wives.

She felt no jealousy; she only felt a deep sense of belonging.

"I would like that,"

She said, her voice full of joy.

"I have spent my life in the cold. I want to be where you are."

Sam smiled and wiped a tear from her cheek.

"Then work hard to make your people happy,"

Sam said.

"Rule well. When I return, I will be proud of the woman you have become."

He turned to the sky. With one last look at her, he stepped into the air and disappeared.

Caiyi stood in the quiet valley, her heart full, waiting for the day he would return.
