Today was the day, and the front yard barely looked like Graymoor anymore.
Tables ran along one side beneath white cloths that kept lifting whenever the wind picked up. Someone had tied flowers around the chairs, and half of them were already coming loose. Nadia was fixing one while arguing with Dort about when the food should be brought out.
"After the ceremony," Dort said.
"People are already hungry."
"They can wait twenty minutes."
I walked past before either of them could involve me.
Callum was near the front steps, helping Sable carry another table across the grass.
Or he had been helping.
Janine had intercepted him.
Again.
She stood directly in his path, talking with both hands while Callum held one end of the table and tried to act like she didn't have his full attention.
He was doing a terrible job.
Elise came up beside me.
Janine laughed at something Callum said.
Callum smiled.
I looked at Elise.
She looked at me.
"That's unsettling."
