The monitor alarm changed. The doctor looked at the screen, then reached for Elise's neck.
"She has no pulse. Get the emergency kit."
"What?"
"Rhys, move."
Petra pulled me away from the bed while Sorin lowered it flat. The doctor started compression immediately in the center of Elise's chest.
"Elise."
She didn't move.
Two nurses came through the door with the emergency kit. One of them fitted a mask over Elise's mouth and nose and started ventilating her while the doctor kept working.
I tried to get closer, but Petra blocked me.
"Let them work, Alpha."
The bond was still there, but weaker than it had been seconds ago.
"She's fading. I can feel it," I said to no one.
Petra looked at me.
The doctor stopped only long enough to check the monitor.
"V-fib. Pads."
One of the nurses tore open Elise's gown enough to place the defibrillator pads against her chest.
"Charging."
The doctor moved his hands away.
"Clear."
