A sharp hush fell upon the ballroom. The anticipation in the air was so tangible, I could almost grab at it. With a proud smile on my face, I turned to look at Kaeren. He held his chin up in the most dignified manner, embodying everything an Alpha represented.
I was beyond proud. I was happy.

A shrill cry shook the entire ballroom at that moment.
My heart nearly stopped as my brain froze over. My back broke into cold sweat, and I felt my entire body tremble. That was because I recognized the voice. I recognized it all too well.
