Chapter 47 - The Woman Who Negotiated With Kings

War was honest.

Politics smiled first.

That was the problem.

And standing in front of me now—

smiling like she personally funded dangerous decisions—

was Lady Aurelia Veyron.

House Veyron's golden daughter.

A woman who walked into ruined cathedrals and somehow made them feel like negotiation lounges.

Impressive.

Concerning.

Very impressive.

The cathedral remained half destroyed around us.

Broken marble.

Silver fire marks.

Hunters were pretending not to stare at vampire nobles openly discussing the future like Heaven hadn't just declared war yesterday.

Honestly?

Everyone was adapting surprisingly well.

Aurelia stood at the centre of the strategy table with one gloved finger resting lightly against a map of clan territories.

Golden hair.

Crimson-gold eyes.

Elegant white dress with gold embroidery sharp enough to qualify as psychological warfare.

Beautiful.

Obviously dangerous.

Valeria leaned toward me and whispered—

"She flirts like a diplomat."

I whispered back—

"That sentence should concern me more than it does."

Seraphina heard both of us.

Of course she did.

Her crimson eyes narrowed slightly.

Tiny movement.

Huge warning.

Excellent.

Healthy relationship dynamics.

Aurelia smiled faintly.

"She's possessive."

I looked at Seraphina.

"She sets things on fire when emotional."

Aurelia nodded thoughtfully.

"Reasonable."

Amazing woman.

Potential disaster.

Perfect.

Lilith remained at the head of the table, royal calm wrapped around hidden calculation.

"House Veyron wishes to negotiate."

Not a question.

Aurelia answered smoothly—

"Yes."

She looked around the cathedral.

"At the moment, Heaven is fractured."

A pause.

"The clans are frightened."

Another pause.

"And everyone with intelligence is waiting to see whether the Vampire King becomes a ruler…"

Her eyes met mine.

"…or a catastrophe."

Fair.

Very fair.

I sipped my coffee.

Still terrible.

Still emotionally accurate.

"And what does House Veyron want?"

Aurelia smiled.

"Survival."

There it was again.

Always survive.

The first religion of powerful families.

She walked slowly around the table.

Graceful.

Measured.

Like every movement, it had already negotiated with gravity beforehand.

"Our clan controls financial influence across half the northern territories."

She tapped the map lightly.

"Banks."

"Trade routes."

"Political debt."

Valeria blinked.

"You people made vampires boring."

Aurelia looked genuinely offended.

"Money is never boring."

Father raised his tea slightly from across the room.

"Correct."

Traitor.

Professional traitor.

Mother looked at Father.

"You're encouraging them."

Father looked back calmly.

"They're already overthrowing supernatural governments. Financial literacy feels appropriate."

Legend.

Absolute legend.

Aurelia's attention returned to me.

"House Veyron can stabilise the neutral territories."

A pause.

"We can prevent civil war."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Selene asked quietly—

"And the cost?"

Because moonlight trusted no one.

Correctly.

Aurelia's smile sharpened.

"Recognition."

There it was.

Not loyalty.

Position.

Power is respected openly.

Lilith folded her arms.

"You want influence over the throne."

Aurelia tilted her head slightly.

"I want a future where my clan survives long enough to argue with it."

Honest.

Good.

I preferred honest ambition.

Seraphina finally spoke.

Cold.

Precise.

"And if the throne refuses?"

Aurelia looked directly at her.

"Then House Veyron leaves."

Simple.

No threats.

No drama.

Just politics.

Honestly?

Terrifying.

I leaned back against the shattered altar.

"Can I ask something?"

Aurelia looked at me.

"Of course."

"Why are you really here?"

Silence.

Tiny.

Interesting.

Then—

for the first time—

The diplomat disappeared.

Only the woman remained.

She looked around the cathedral slowly.

At hunters standing beside vampires.

Elena refuses the old laws.

At the queens beside me.

My family is eating snacks in the middle of supernatural politics.

Perfect.

Then she answered quietly—

"Because I'm tired."

That changed the room.

Aurelia continued softly—

"Tired of noble clans sacrificing daughters for alliances."

"Tired of ancient men deciding survival means fear."

"Tired of watching powerful families preserve themselves while ordinary people disappear between our wars."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Good.

She looked directly into my eyes.

"And because for the first time in centuries…"

A pause.

"…someone sat on the throne and did not immediately speak about domination."

There it was.

The real negotiation.

Hope.

Dangerous.

Far more dangerous than fear.

Valeria looked emotionally compromised again.

Concerning the pattern.

Lilith studied Aurelia carefully.

Not as an enemy.

Not yet.

As a possibility.

More dangerous.

Seraphina asked quietly—

"So you believe him?"

Aurelia smiled faintly.

"No."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Then she looked at me.

"But I want to."

That one landed harder than expected.

Because trust offered carefully always mattered more than blind loyalty.

I pushed away from the altar and walked toward her slowly.

The cathedral watched.

Hunters.

Priests.

Queens.

Saint.

Everyone.

Because negotiations between kingdoms were never really about politics.

They were about people deciding whether disappointment was worth risking again.

I stopped in front of Aurelia.

Close enough to see exhaustion hidden behind elegance.

Good.

Honesty suited her.

I said quietly—

"You shouldn't trust kings."

She raised one golden brow.

"No?"

I smiled faintly.

"We're historically terrible at emotional balance."

Valeria coughed loudly.

"Confirmed."

Rude.

Accurate.

But rude.

I continued—

"But you can trust choices."

A pause.

"I chose my people before my throne."

"Before Heaven."

"Before power."

My voice lowered.

"And I will continue choosing them."

Silence.

Aurelia stared at me.

Long.

Carefully.

Then—

She laughed softly.

Warm.

Surprised.

As she had expected, another ruler accidentally found a person.

Dangerous moment.

Very dangerous.

She extended her hand.

Elegant.

Certain.

"Then House Veyron chooses negotiation."

I looked at her hand.

Then, I took it.

The moment our hands touched—

The cathedral shifted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

Another clan had stepped toward the throne.

Not forced.

Not conquered.

Chosen.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Aurelia's eyes held mine for one second longer than politics required.

Seraphina noticed immediately.

Of course she did.

Valeria definitely noticed.

Because chaos tracked romance professionally.

Lilith sighed softly.

Selene looked deeply unsurprised.

Elena watched from above with the expression of someone realising history had become dangerously hopeful.

Perfect.

Aurelia released my hand slowly.

Then smiled.

Sharp.

Golden.

Dangerous.

"One warning, Your Majesty."

I raised an eyebrow.

"That title still feels illegal."

"You'll adapt."

Concerning confidence.

She continued—

"If you truly intend to build a kingdom instead of an empire…"

A pause.

"…then eventually the world will send someone impossible to negotiate with."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Because she was right.

There were always people who preferred burning worlds to changing them.

I asked—

"And when that happens?"

Aurelia smiled without warmth.

"Then queens stop negotiating."

Valeria grinned immediately.

Seraphina looked interested.

Lilith looked prepared.

Selene looked cold enough to freeze prophecy itself.

And somewhere deep inside—

The throne answered.

Not hunger.

Not war.

Recognition.

Because kingdoms were rising now.

And history?

History was beginning to realise

The second Vampire King might become something far more dangerous than the first.

Loved.

Author's Thoughts

Thank you for reading Chapter 47.

Aurelia Veyron has entered the game.

Not as an enemy.

Not as an ally.

As a possibility.

And that is always more dangerous.

The queens are building kingdoms.

The clans are beginning to choose sides.

And for the first time—

Hope has entered politics.

Which means war is coming closer.
