Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Something Doesn’t Add Up

By the time the next day came—

Something had shifted.

Not loudly.

Not in a way everybody could see.

But if you were paying attention—

Like she was—

You would notice it.

---

The rumor was no longer moving the same way.

Before, it was fast.

Sharp.

Exciting.

Now?

It was slower.

Confused.

Like people didn't even know what they were chasing again.

---

She stepped into the compound that morning, adjusting the strap of her bag as usual.

The sun was already bright, reflecting off the dusty ground. A keke passed outside, its horn sounding unnecessarily loud.

*Asaba mornings and noise… no difference.*

"Morning!" Mia called as she walked past.

"Morning," she replied, nodding.

Mia looked normal.

Too normal.

No tension.

No awkwardness.

Just her usual calm self.

*If it was really her… would she be this relaxed?*

---

She walked further in.

Agadi was seated already, legs crossed, fanning herself with her notebook.

"NEPA took light again," Agadi said immediately. "I didn't sleep well."

"Same," she replied, sitting down.

Favor joined seconds later.

"Onye kwu that thing. This heat is not normal."

Jiggy came in last, dragging his feet.

"I almost didn't come today," he said.

"Stay at home next time," Agadi replied.

"No, I need education," he said.

"Education is avoiding you," she said calmly.

The class laughed.

She shook her head, smiling slightly.

*Same people. Same routine.*

---

But her eyes moved again.

Out of habit.

To check.

---

They were both there.

The girl—talking to Mia now.

Laughing.

Relaxed.

---

The boy—sitting with another group.

Also relaxed.

No tension.

No hidden looks.

Nothing.

---

She frowned slightly.

*This is not matching.*

---

Agadi leaned in.

"You're thinking."

"I'm not thinking."

"You're thinking."

"I'm observing."

Agadi smirked. "Observer."

---

She didn't reply.

But in her mind—

Things were rearranging.

---

*If it was both of them…*

*Why are they both so normal now?*

---

Before she could think deeper, Mr Charles entered.

"Good morning."

"Good morning, sir."

"Open your books."

---

Class started immediately.

Today's topic was not easy.

Even the serious students were struggling.

---

After explaining for a while, he turned.

"Do you understand?"

Silence.

Then—

"Sir… no," someone said.

He nodded.

"Good."

Then pointed randomly.

"You—try it."

The student stood.

Tried.

Got it wrong.

---

Mr Charles shook his head.

"You people like to pretend."

The class laughed lightly.

---

Then—

Jiggy raised his hand again.

"Sir… can I try?"

Agadi turned sharply.

"You?"

Jiggy ignored her.

Mr Charles looked at him.

"Try."

Jiggy stood.

Walked to the board.

Held the marker like it was something dangerous.

Then wrote something.

Stopped.

Looked back.

"…Sir, I forgot."

The class burst into laughter.

Even Mr Charles smiled slightly.

"Go and sit down before you embarrass your village."

Jiggy returned proudly.

"At least I tried."

"Tragic effort," Agadi said.

---

She laughed softly.

But her mind—

Still not settled.

---

Because something still didn't make sense.

---

Halfway through the lesson—

It happened.

Not big.

But clear.

---

The boy asked a question.

Not to the girl.

To someone else.

And he asked it normally.

No tension.

No hesitation.

---

The girl didn't even look.

Not once.

---

That was when it hit her properly.

---

*This is not mutual.*

---

She leaned back slowly.

Her eyes narrowing slightly.

---

Agadi noticed immediately.

"What?"

She hesitated.

Then spoke quietly.

"I think we were wrong."

Agadi frowned.

"How?"

She glanced forward.

Then back.

"Look at them."

Agadi did.

Carefully.

This time—not just casually.

But properly.

---

Seconds passed.

Then—

Agadi blinked.

"Wait…"

---

Favor leaned in.

"What?"

Agadi didn't answer immediately.

Then slowly—

"She's not looking at him."

---

Silence.

---

Favor's eyes widened.

"Onye kwu that thing."

---

She nodded slightly.

"And he's also not looking at her."

Agadi added.

---

Jiggy leaned in.

"What are you people saying?"

Agadi turned to him.

"Maybe nobody likes anybody."

---

Jiggy froze.

"…So what have I been following since?"

---

They laughed.

But this time—

It wasn't just funny.

It was confusing.

---

Break time came.

And like always—

Students went outside.

---

But today—

The energy was different.

Calmer.

Less intense.

---

She stood near the wall again, watching.

Thinking.

---

Then—

Something new happened.

---

The girl walked past.

Stopped.

Turned.

Then called—

"Favor."

---

Favor blinked.

"Me?"

"Yes."

---

Favor walked to her.

They spoke quietly.

Too quietly to hear.

---

Agadi leaned closer.

"What are they saying?"

"I don't know."

---

After a few seconds—

Favor came back.

Slowly.

---

Agadi looked at her.

"Well?"

---

Favor hesitated.

Then—

"She asked for past questions."

---

Silence.

---

Agadi blinked.

"That's it?"

---

Favor nodded.

"Onye kwu that thing."

---

She exhaled slowly.

*So normal.*

---

But her eyes shifted again.

To the boy.

---

He was still alone.

Still not reacting.

Still… separate.

---

And now—

It was clearer.

---

*It was never both of them.*

---

She leaned back.

A small smile forming.

---

Agadi noticed.

"You've figured something out."

She didn't reply.

---

But in her mind—

The pieces were coming together.

---

Not fully.

But enough.

---

*This story is not what everybody thinks.*

---

She looked ahead again.

At the class.

At the people.

At the movement.

---

Then she shook her head slightly.

---

*We really created a whole story from nothing.*

---

But something inside her said—

*Not completely nothing.*

---

And that was the part she was going to find out.
