Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 : The Mercury Man

Chapter 43 : The Mercury Man

The blood was wrong.

I knew it the moment I stepped into the Beacon Hill brownstone and saw the body on the Persian rug. The lighting was dim, but even from the doorway, I could see the sheen on the floor around the victim's head—not the dark rust of dried blood, but something brighter. Metallic.

"What do you make of it?" Olivia asked, crouching beside the body while crime scene techs photographed everything.

"I'll need a closer look."

Walter was already there, peeling back the victim's eyelids with gloved fingers, making the small satisfied sounds he made when something violated natural law in interesting ways. Peter stood against the wall, arms crossed, watching his father work with the particular expression he wore when he suspected Walter was about to say something disturbing.

"The blood," Walter announced, "is not blood."

He held up a sample tube. The liquid inside caught the light and scattered it like chrome.

"Mercury?" Peter stepped forward, frowning. "How is someone walking around with mercury in their veins?"

"They weren't." Walter's eyes were bright with scientific fascination. "At least, not in the conventional sense. The cellular structure here is extraordinary—human tissue fused with machine components at a molecular level. It's as if someone built a better human and succeeded at everything except the soul."

I felt my stomach tighten. Shapeshifters. The Red Universe's infiltration agents—biological machines designed to kill a target, assume their identity, and operate undetected. In the show, they'd arrived as advance scouts for Walternate's war. But that was supposed to be later. Much later.

The Reiden Lake breach had drawn attention. Kade-1 had warned me about entities hearing my signal and responding. This must be part of that response—the Red Universe accelerating their reconnaissance timeline.

"Can you determine cause of death?" Olivia asked.

Walter prodded the body with something that looked like a modified tuning fork. "The mercury acts as both coolant and conductor for the hybrid biology. Something disrupted the flow—see these crystallization patterns? The mercury solidified before death, causing cascading system failures." He looked up. "Someone or something killed this... person... by interrupting their circulation."

"Another one of these things?" Peter suggested.

"Possible. Or the biological components simply failed. These hybrid systems would be incredibly delicate—any contamination could trigger—"

I stopped listening to Walter's speculation. My mind was racing through implications.

Shapeshifters in Boston. At least one, possibly more. Operating for who knew how long before this body was discovered. And every shapeshifter I remembered from the show had a mission—replace a specific target, gather intelligence, prepare for something larger.

The question was: who had this one already replaced?

Back at the lab, Walter spread mercury-blood samples across every available surface while Astrid ran database searches on the victim's identity.

"His name was Marcus Webb," she reported. "Forty-two years old, no criminal record, worked as an accountant for a small firm in the financial district. Nothing unusual in his background."

"That's because he wasn't Marcus Webb," I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

"The mercury blood, the hybrid biology—this wasn't a human who was modified. This was something that assumed Marcus Webb's identity. The real Marcus Webb is probably dead somewhere, and this thing has been living his life for..." I shrugged. "We'd need to check the timeline."

Olivia's eyes narrowed. "You sound certain."

"I'm extrapolating from Walter's findings. If the biology is biomechanical from the ground up, not grafted onto existing human tissue, then this was never a human being. It was built to impersonate one."

The explanation was thin, but it gave them a framework without revealing that I'd watched this exact revelation play out on television. Olivia didn't look entirely convinced, but she didn't push.

"If that's true," Peter said slowly, "then somewhere there's a real Marcus Webb who was killed and replaced. And if there's one of these things, there could be more."

"Almost certainly more," Walter agreed, still examining samples with his magnifying loupe. "The engineering required for this kind of hybrid would be extraordinarily complex. No one builds a single prototype. They build production models."

The conversation continued—theories, possibilities, investigative approaches—but I was only half listening. My attention had turned to the Massive Dynamic monitoring feed on my laptop, still running in a background window.

The dimensional disturbance map showed something I hadn't noticed before. A signature that matched the mercury readings from the shapeshifter's body. And according to the timestamp data, that signature had been present in Boston for three weeks before Marcus Webb's body was discovered.

Three weeks. Long enough to kill, replace, and establish a cover identity.

Long enough to do it more than once.

That night, the network link pulsed with urgency.

I sat in my hotel room, laptop closed, focusing on the connection to Kade-1. His presence came through with an edge of alarm I hadn't felt from him before.

Shapeshifter activity has spiked in my universe, he sent. Six confirmed kills in the past ten days. They're not being subtle anymore.

Same here. We found a body today—mercury blood, biomechanical hybrid. It's been in Boston for weeks.

They're not scouts. The other Kade's thoughts carried grim certainty. They're mapping your world for someone. Creating infiltration networks, identifying targets, preparing infrastructure.

For what?

In my universe? War. The Red Side has been planning a cross-dimensional conflict for years. The shapeshifters are their advance force. A pause, heavy with implication. Your Reiden Lake breach didn't just draw Observer attention. It signaled to everyone watching that the Blue Universe barrier is vulnerable. You're being probed.

The thought settled into my stomach like cold water. Walternate—Peter's biological father, Walter's alternate, the Secretary of Defense for a universe at war—was sending agents into my world. Testing defenses. Identifying weaknesses.

And I was one of the variables he'd want to understand.

What do I do?

What you're already doing. Watch. Analyze. Protect the people who matter when you can. Kade-1's presence flickered with something like dark humor. And try not to attract more attention than you already have.

The link faded to background awareness. I sat in the darkness, thinking about mercury blood and infiltration networks and the war that was coming whether I wanted it or not.

The shapeshifter had been in Boston for three weeks. That meant it had already killed and replaced someone. Someone whose identity it was currently wearing, whose life it was currently living.

And Fringe Division had been working alongside the copy without knowing it.
