We had come a long way for us to be able to convey our feelings to each other like that.
I was worried that the moment I told him that I loved him, Zahid would trample all over it. But now, the weight of distrust I carried had been lifted entirely and I could tell him exactly how I was feeling.
Zahid wasn’t able to respond right after I confessed to him and for quite a while, he was frozen stiff.
“You… really love me?” He eventually asked.
Instead of answering with words, I took hold of his hand. Holding hands with him… I wanted to do that the entire time I was crawling out of the darkness.
“I… saw it. I saw you do all of that for me…”
Zahid closed his eyes slowly and opened them again. I held his hand firmly, using all of my strength to make sure we never let go.
“It must have been so hard for you… and yet…”
