[Scene 1: The Impossible Prediction]
The room was silent except for the ticking of the clock.
Detective Adrian Vale stared at the photograph on his desk. It showed a man standing outside a bank, looking directly at the camera.
There was nothing unusual about the picture.
Except for the date.
The photograph had been taken tomorrow.
Adrian leaned back in his chair, rubbing his tired eyes.
"Tell me this is a joke."
Across the desk, Mara Chen shook her head.
"The original file was recovered from a damaged security server. The timestamp matches tomorrow's date, and the camera's internal clock has been verified."
"Could someone have changed it?"
"We checked. Three independent systems recorded the same information."
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
"Then someone wants us to believe they can see the future."
Mara folded her arms.
"Or someone knows exactly what we're going to do before we do it."
A sudden notification appeared on Adrian's computer.
An anonymous message.
YOU HAVE TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
Beneath it was an address.
Adrian stood immediately.
"Get your coat."
"Where are we going?"
He picked up the photograph.
"To meet tomorrow."
[Scene 2: The Abandoned Station]
Rain poured over the abandoned railway station.
Adrian arrived first, his footsteps echoing beneath the rusted roof. Mara followed close behind, scanning the dark corners with her flashlight.
The address had led them to Platform Seven.
There were no trains scheduled to arrive.
No passengers.
No security cameras.
Only an old wooden bench and a newspaper folded neatly on its seat.
Adrian approached it carefully.
The newspaper was dated the following morning.
He opened it.
A headline occupied the entire front page.
LOCAL INVESTIGATOR FOUND DEAD AFTER MIDNIGHT.
Beneath the headline was his photograph.
Mara snatched the paper from his hands.
"This isn't possible."
Adrian checked his watch.
Eleven forty-three.
Seventeen minutes until midnight.
"Someone is trying to frighten us," he said, though his voice lacked its usual confidence.
A metallic sound came from the tunnel.
Both detectives turned.
At the far end of the platform, a telephone began to ring.
Adrian moved toward it.
"Don't touch it," Mara warned.
He stopped.
The telephone rang again.
Then a voice emerged from the darkness.
"Detective Vale, you should have stayed home."
[Scene 3: The Voice on the Line]
Adrian lifted the receiver.
"Who are you?"
A quiet laugh answered him.
"Someone who knows what happens next."
"Then tell me something useful. Who will die tonight?"
"You are asking the wrong question."
Adrian tightened his grip on the receiver.
"What's the right one?"
"Why do you believe tomorrow has already been decided?"
The line crackled.
Mara searched the platform, but there was no one in sight.
Adrian spoke again.
"If you know the future, tell me what I'm going to do."
The stranger answered immediately.
"You will turn around. Your partner will draw her weapon. And you will both discover that you came here alone."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
He turned.
Mara was standing several steps behind him, her flashlight pointed at the tunnel.
But something was wrong.
Her shadow stretched in the opposite direction from the light.
Then every lamp on the platform went out.
A sharp sound rang through the darkness.
Mara shouted his name.
Adrian dropped the telephone and ran toward her voice.
When the emergency lights finally flickered back to life, the platform was empty.
Mara was gone.
So was the newspaper.
Only Adrian's photograph remained on the bench.
Someone had written a new message across it in black ink.
THE FIRST PREDICTION HAS COME TRUE.
[Scene 4: Tomorrow's Witness]
At 12:06 a.m., Adrian stumbled into the nearest police station.
His clothes were soaked, his hands trembling.
He demanded access to every surveillance recording from the abandoned station.
The officers searched for nearly an hour.
They found nothing.
No footage of Mara entering the building.
No footage of Adrian arriving.
According to the station's records, Platform Seven had been closed for repairs for six months.
Then a young officer approached with a sealed envelope.
"This was delivered for you."
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Mara stood in front of a building Adrian had never seen before. Behind her, a large digital clock displayed a time of 8:30 a.m.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
SHE IS ALIVE. FOR NOW.
Adrian turned the photograph over again.
There was another detail he hadn't noticed.
A second figure stood behind Mara, almost hidden by the shadows.
The figure was wearing Adrian's coat.
And holding a newspaper with tomorrow's date.
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number appeared on the screen.
One message arrived.
IF YOU WANT HER BACK, COME ALONE.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
AND DON'T TRUST THE MAN WHO DELIVERS THIS LETTER.
Slowly, Adrian raised his eyes toward the young officer.
The officer was smiling.
To be continued...
