Chapter 31 - Chapter 30: The Name Behind the Shadow

"The next chapter is here! 🎉 The investigation takes a dangerous turn as the team discovers that someone has been watching their every move. Every answer leads to another mystery. Thank you for your amazing support! 📖🔥"

[Scene 1: The Unexpected Signal]

The safehouse had fallen silent.

Light stared at the audio equipment, replaying the final seconds of the recording. The mysterious voice continued to echo in his mind.

"The Shinigami is getting restless."

Those words had changed everything.

Across the room, the detective known only as L leaned forward in his chair. His dark eyes remained fixed on the waveform displayed across the computer screen.

"Play it again," he said.

Light pressed the button.

Static filled the room, followed by the same unfamiliar voice.

Then something new happened.

A faint clicking sound appeared beneath the recording.

L immediately raised one hand.

"Stop."

Light froze the playback.

"What is it?"

"That sound wasn't part of the conversation." L zoomed in on the waveform. "Someone activated a second device during the meeting."

Light frowned.

"Another listening device?"

"Possibly. But there's something strange about its timing."

L replayed the final seconds at a slower speed.

The clicking sound repeated three times.

Then the recording ended.

L's expression became serious.

"Someone else was listening to that meeting."

[Scene 2: An Empty Office]

Several floors above the streets of Tokyo, a man stood alone inside a dark office.

City lights reflected across the glass walls behind him.

On his desk lay a small recording device, its indicator light blinking red.

He listened to the voices one final time before removing the batteries.

"They heard enough," he murmured.

A phone vibrated beside his hand.

One message appeared on the screen.

THE INVESTIGATION HAS REACHED LEVEL TWO.

The man stared at it for several seconds.

Then he smiled.

"Good."

He opened a locked drawer and removed a thin folder. Inside were photographs, dates, and handwritten notes documenting every major move made by the investigators.

At the bottom of the final page was a single name.

The man crossed it out.

"You're no longer useful to us."

He placed the folder inside a metal case and shut it.

Suddenly, his phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID was hidden.

He answered without speaking.

A distorted voice came through the receiver.

"You made a mistake."

The man's smile disappeared.

"What mistake?"

"You allowed them to hear the name."

The line went dead.

For the first time that evening, the man looked afraid.

[Scene 3: The Missing File]

Back at the safehouse, L had begun searching the recording's metadata.

Light paced behind him.

"If someone else was listening, we need to know who they are."

"Agreed."

L opened a directory containing the investigation's most sensitive files.

Then he stopped.

One file was missing.

It had been there less than an hour earlier.

Light stepped closer.

"What happened?"

L checked the access history.

The file had been opened remotely.

Not copied.

Not downloaded.

Opened—and then permanently erased.

Light's expression hardened.

"Can you trace the connection?"

L's fingers moved rapidly across the keyboard.

"I can try."

A few seconds passed.

Then the computer displayed a location.

Light leaned toward the screen.

"That's impossible."

L tilted his head.

"Why?"

Light pointed at the address.

"Because that building was demolished five years ago."

Neither man spoke.

Then a new notification appeared on the monitor.

INCOMING MESSAGE: UNKNOWN SENDER

L opened it.

The message contained only one sentence.

STOP SEARCHING FOR THE SHINIGAMI. START SEARCHING FOR YOURSELF.

For several seconds, the room remained completely still.

Then the computer screen went black.

[Scene 4: The Next Target]

Across the city, a figure watched the safehouse through a security camera.

The image disappeared as the system shut down.

The figure removed a headset and turned toward someone standing in the shadows.

"They received the message."

"And?"

"They understand that they're being watched."

A quiet laugh came from the darkness.

"Excellent."

The figure hesitated.

"Should we proceed with the next phase?"

The answer came immediately.

"No. Not yet."

A folder was placed on the table.

Its cover displayed a photograph of Light.

Beneath it was another photograph—one that Light had never seen before.

The second photograph showed a man standing outside the safehouse.

He was wearing the same clothes Light had worn that morning.

But the date printed beneath the image was impossible.

It had been taken tomorrow.

The figure in the shadows spoke one final sentence.

"Let them investigate."

A pause followed.

"By the time they discover who is controlling this game, it will already be too late."
