Hey guys!

I've decided to put this little chapter at the start of the fic to track any older chapters I go back to rewrite, edit, or otherwise mess with.

As the story has gone on, I occasionally look back at some of the early chapters and think:

Jesus Christ, I wrote that?

So whenever I make any substantial changes, I'll list them here. This doesn't necessarily mean the story's events have changed. Most of these will probably just be me cleaning up dialogue, fixing awkward writing, improving character interactions, dealing with continuity issues, or generally bringing older chapters closer to how I write the fic now.

I'll try to avoid changing anything that would suddenly make later chapters confusing, and if I ever do make an actual story/continuity change, I'll make that clear here...

ALSO SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THESE BEFORE!!!

...

Chapter 1, Updated: 29/08/2026 & 09/10/2026

The main thing I wanted to fix was the dialogue, especially the conversation between Kai and the Higher Being. Looking back, some of it felt a little stiff and rushed, so I tried to make the exchange flow more naturally while keeping the same ridiculous premise and humour.

I also cleaned up some of the prose and tweaked the opening with the mosquito so Kai's adaptation and personality come across a bit better from the start.

With the October 2026 update, I've gone back over the conversation with the Higher Being AGAIN. Apparently, I wasn't quite satisfied the first time. There were still a few moments where Kai was essentially asking the same question three different ways, and the Higher Being was explaining things that had already been established.

So I've shortened some of that and tried to make the conversation feel more natural, especially Kai's reactions to the increasingly stupid situation he's found himself in.

Hopefully it reads a lot better now, especially the dialogue. If anyone rereads it, let me know what you think!

Chapter 2, Updated: 09/10/2026

This one focuses mostly on the interactions between Kai and his parents, especially when he comes home after discovering that his powers actually work.

I wanted the conversations to feel more like an actual family, especially given how affectionate and obnoxiously involved his parents are in his life. Some of the original dialogue had them repeatedly asking questions or reacting in almost identical ways, which made the whole exchange feel a little unnatural.

I've adjusted that so their personalities come across a bit better, and the humour hopefully feels more organic.

Kai is still a little shit, his parents still love him far too aggressively, and he's still hiding the fact that he's eaten a Devil Fruit.

The candle experiment and the discovery of his adaptation remain unchanged, as does the fact that his parents have absolutely no idea what their son has gotten himself into.

Poor bastards. :)

Chapter 3, Updated: 09/10/2026

A relatively minor update compared to some of the others.

The main changes concern the fishing trip with Kai's dad. Looking back, their conversation had quite a few unnecessary interruptions and repeated questions, which made it feel more like an interrogation than father-son time

So I've cleaned that up, adjusted some of the humour, and made their exchanges a little more familiar.

I've also kept the explanations surrounding Kai's adaptation intact, including the thresholds, stages, adaptation memory, and his thoughts about Haki, Logias, and the sea.

No changes to how his powers actually function.

I know how invested some of you are in the mechanics of his Devil Fruit, so don't worry, I'm not secretly changing the rules every three chapters.

Although that does sound like something I'd do, doesn't it?

Chapter 4, Updated: 30/08/2026 & 09/10/2026

The first update fixed a genuinely impressive number of grammar issues, mostly thanks to one commenter who went through and pointed a bunch of them out.

So, many praises to them. Their 'tism has been put to excellent use, and I am more than happy to continue exploiting it for the betterment of the fic :)

I also went back over the dinner scene with Kai's parents and adjusted some of the dialogue so the conversation flows a bit more naturally and feels less awkward in places.

With the latest update, I gave that dinner conversation another pass, especially the argument about Kai wanting to join the Marines.

I wanted to keep his parents' ridiculous reactions, because I genuinely enjoy writing them, while making their real concerns and eventual discussion feel more believable.

His mother is still wonderfully dramatic, his father is still trying to be the reasonable one, and Kai is still somehow convinced that announcing his intention to join the military halfway through dinner was a good idea.

I also shortened some of the repeated arguments and gave each parent a slightly more distinct voice.

No major story changes here, just grammar fixes, dialogue cleanup, and general polishing.

Chapter 5, Updated: 09/10/2026

This chapter introduces a few characters who become rather important later, so I wanted to give their dialogue some extra attention.

Mainly Captain Vale and Sergeant Mallor.

I've shortened some of the training conversations, removed unnecessary back-and-forth questions, and tried to make both characters sound more distinct.

Mallor should come across as the rough but fairly practical instructor he is, while Vale's dialogue has been adjusted to better reflect her authority and personality.

I also cleaned up Kai's interactions with them, particularly his rather unfortunate attraction to Vale.

Seriously, brother was down horrendous.

The actual training, adaptations, and progression haven't changed. It's mostly about improving how the characters interact and making the conversations less repetitive.

Chapter 6, Updated: 09/10/2026

Ah, yes. Derren.

One of my favourite punching bags from the earlier chapters. :)

Most of the changes concern the disciplinary meeting with Captain Vale after Kai and Derren's little disagreement.

I noticed that the original conversation went around in circles a bit, with characters repeatedly defending themselves or asking essentially the same questions.

I've shortened that and tried to make everyone's personality more apparent. Derren is defensive and desperate to avoid responsibility, Vale is firmly in control of the situation, and Kai is being an insufferable smartass.

So, business as usual.

I also adjusted Vale's questioning and the punishments she hands out so the whole conversation feels more coherent.

Nothing significant has changed story-wise, and Derren still gets absolutely folded.

Deserved, frankly.

Chapter 7, Updated: 09/10/2026

This was the chapter with Kai's first real encounter with Vale's rather questionable interpretation of justice.

The original dialogue had a few instances where Vale was explaining her beliefs at considerable length, while Kai responded with questions that didn't necessarily need asking.

I've shortened some of those exchanges and tried to make the conversation less like a philosophical debate. Vale's actions should say a lot about what kind of person she is, and Kai's reaction should feel like someone who's just witnessed something genuinely disturbing.

Importantly, I haven't changed what Vale does or how Kai reacts. Her execution of the prisoners, her justification for doing so, and Kai's growing discomfort remain intact.

I actually quite like this chapter conceptually, so hopefully the revised dialogue does it more justice.

Heh. Justice.

...

Chapter 8, Updated: 09/10/2026

Quite a few changes here, mostly surrounding Vale's dialogue and the events involving Toma.

One issue I noticed was that Vale occasionally sounded like she was delivering a full villain monologue whenever she opened her mouth.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good villain monologue as much as the next guy, but there's a time and place, and sometimes people can communicate how awful they are without spending six paragraphs explaining their personal philosophy.

So I've toned down some of those speeches, made her "manipulation" of Kai more direct, and adjusted the conversations about the protection payments and medicine.

The confrontation involving Toma has also received some dialogue cleanup. I wanted the cruelty of the situation to come across naturally, particularly through what the characters say and do.

All the major events remain unchanged, including Kai's eventual decision to turn against Vale.

And yes, "I'd adapt" is still there.

Obviously.

I'm not THAT stupid.

...

Chapter 9, Updated: 09/10/2026

The fight against the Marines has received some attention, particularly the dialogue during combat.

I've shortened a number of exchanges and adjusted Vale's commands so they actually respond to what's happening rather than having everyone constantly announce their intentions.

I also wanted Kai's jokes and comments to feel a little more natural, since there were points where he'd interrupt the action just to say something that wasn't particularly necessary.

Don't worry, he's still an obnoxious bastard.

That is a fundamental aspect of his character, and I refuse to compromise on it.

Mallor's involvement has also been cleaned up slightly, particularly his decision to help Toma, while the major adaptations and fight developments remain the same.

And of course, the "Clink" and "Adapted" moment is untouched.

Gotta maintain the agenda.

...

Chapter 10, Updated: 09/10/2026

This is probably one of the more important chapters I've revisited.

For obvious reasons.

I wanted the confrontation with Vale to remain as brutal and uncomfortable as originally intended, but looking back, some of the dialogue and descriptions felt unnecessarily drawn out.

So I've tightened things up considerably, especially during the actual killing.

Kai's anger is still very much present, and I haven't tried to make his actions seem any less disturbing. That was never the intention of the scene, and I think it's important that what happens here continues to affect how people perceive him.

I've also reworked the dialogue involving Toma and Mallor, particularly Kai's rather unsuccessful attempt to reassure the former.

Poor kid just watched something that would probably require several lifetimes of therapy.

Overall, I wanted the scene to carry more weight without needing the characters to explain every emotion they're experiencing.

No changes to the actual outcome.

...

Chapter 11, Updated: 09/10/2026

Finally, the aftermath of the whole Shellstown incident.

Most of the dialogue changes concern Mallor and Kai, particularly their conversation about Vale's corruption, the recovered money and medicine, and what happens next. The original version had quite a bit of explanatory dialogue, especially when discussing the consequences of Vale's death and the Marines' involvement in her activities.

I've shortened that and tried to make the conversation feel more personal. Mallor's responsibility is also addressed more directly, which I think matters given his role throughout these chapters.

I've kept the major character moments intact, including Mallor addressing Kai by his first name, the restitution for the villagers, and Kai's rather uncomfortable reflections on whether he's actually done the right thing.

And naturally, the chapter still ends with the reveal of his first bounty.
