Chapter 17 - Chapter XVII: Lake Date...?

The fire had burned a little lower now, the flames softer but still warm enough to keep the group gathered around it.

Empty bottles sat scattered in the dirt circle between them, and the vodka bottle still rested in the middle like the centerpiece of the chaos.

After Sarah's answer, the mood around the fire had shifted slightly.

Jake was still grinning like he had just witnessed the beginning of a soap opera.

Emma looked amused.

Liam leaned back lazily against a log while Marco tried very hard not to look at Sarah too much.

Ray sat beside Kate, taking another slow sip of his beer.

Kate was quieter now, her eyes occasionally drifting toward the fire.

Then Sarah leaned forward.

"Well," she said casually.

"My turn."

She grabbed the bottle and spun it with a confident flick of her fingers.

The glass spun across the dirt, reflecting the flickering firelight while everyone watched it roll around the circle.

Jake leaned closer.

"Come on…"

The bottle slowed.

It wobbled once.

Then finally stopped.

Pointing directly at Kate.

Jake immediately pointed.

"OHHHHH!"

Emma smiled.

"Well this should be interesting."

Sarah leaned back slightly, watching Kate with a playful look in her eyes.

"Truth or dare?" she asked.

Kate didn't even hesitate.

She looked Sarah straight in the eyes and leaned forward slightly.

"Dare, bitch."

For half a second the group went completely silent.

Then Jake exploded.

He jumped to his feet, pointing between them like a sports commentator witnessing the greatest rivalry in history.

"IT'S SO HOT!" he shouted.

"SO FUCKING HOT!"

Emma covered her face, laughing.

"Jake, sit down before you hurt yourself."

Liam nearly spilled his drink while Marco shook his head with a quiet chuckle.

Dylan leaned forward, clearly interested in where this was going.

Sarah didn't react to Jake at all.

Her eyes stayed on Kate.

A slow smile appeared on her face as she thought about the dare.

The fire cracked softly between them while everyone waited to hear what she would say.

Sarah tilted her head slightly, studying Kate like she was measuring how far she could push her.

Then she smiled.

"Alright… you cocky bitch?" she said, her tone sounding more like a challenge than a dare.

Kate didn't break eye contact.

Sarah raised her hand and pointed into the darkness behind them.

"Get into that small lake over there."

Everyone turned to look.

A smaller lake sat not far from the campfire, half hidden between trees. It didn't have a beach or a proper shore like the main lake. The water was darker there, the surface barely visible in the night.

That was probably why the camp hadn't used it for the earlier activity.

Then Sarah added the second part.

"And take Ray with you."

She leaned back slightly and gave a playful wink.

The group immediately reacted.

Jake slapped the ground beside him.

"OH MY GOD."

Emma burst out laughing.

Liam leaned forward with interest.

Dylan muttered, "This is about to get interesting."

Ray blinked once, then looked at Kate.

The fire crackled between them while everyone waited to see what she would do.

"Just get inside it?" Kate said with a small shrug. "That's simple."

A faint smile appeared on her face.

But before anyone could react, Sarah stood up and stepped closer to her.

"Oh no," she said, leaning in slightly, her voice playful but clearly pushing the challenge further.

"Of course not."

She pointed again toward the dark little lake between the trees.

"You need to stay there for at least fifteen minutes."

The fire crackled behind them while the group watched the exchange.

Sarah crossed her arms and smiled.

"It's not going to be a problem, is it?" she asked.

"Warm night."

Jake leaned forward immediately.

"Oh this is getting good."

Kate didn't answer.

Instead, she stood up.

For a second she kept her eyes on Sarah, that same stubborn smile still on her face, like she had something to prove.

Then she reached down and grabbed Ray's hand.

Before he could even react, she started dragging him toward the trees.

Toward the small lake.

Ray stumbled slightly as she pulled him up.

"Hey—"

But Kate didn't slow down.

Behind them the group exploded.

"WOOOOOOOH!" Jake screamed at the top of his lungs, jumping to his feet like he had just witnessed the beginning of the greatest event in camp history.

Emma laughed loudly while Liam leaned back with a grin.

Marco covered his mouth, already anticipating chaos.

Dylan shook his head, watching the two disappear between the trees.

The firelight faded behind them as Kate pulled Ray toward the dark water waiting in the quiet forest.

After a few minutes of walking through the trees, the sounds of the campfire faded behind them.

The laughter, the shouting, Jake's dramatic commentary — all of it slowly disappeared into the night.

Soon it was just the two of them.

Kate finally slowed down as they reached the edge of the small lake.

The water was darker than the main one they had visited earlier. There was no beach here, only uneven ground, grass, and a few rocks along the shoreline.

The surface of the lake was calm, reflecting the faint moonlight between the trees.

Kate stopped right at the water's edge.

Ray looked down at the lake, then back at her.

"Well," he said, glancing at the quiet water.

"I guess this is the part where we freeze for fifteen minutes."

Kate stopped at the water's edge and turned toward him.

"We are not going to fuck, Ray."

She looked at him for a second, her expression completely serious.

Ray blinked, clearly caught off guard.

"…What?"

"I'm serious," she added quickly.

For a moment he just stared at her, trying to process where that had even come from.

Then he let out a short laugh and ran a hand through his hair.

"That wasn't exactly my first thought," he said.

The lake was quiet beside them, the surface barely moving under the moonlight while the sounds of the campfire remained distant behind the trees.

"Well, it wasn't mine either," she said quickly, trying to play off what she had just said.

She crossed her arms for a second, clearly a little embarrassed by her own words.

"But it's what men always think about," she added defensively.

Before Ray could even respond, she suddenly grabbed the hem of her pajama bottoms and pulled them off.

She stood there for a brief moment in just her white top and matching white panties.

The moonlight reflected faintly off the lake behind her.

Kate glanced at Ray shyly for a second, clearly aware that he was looking.

Then, before the moment could stretch any longer, she turned and jumped into the water with a splash.

Ray didn't comment on what she had said.

He simply pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it onto the grass. Then he kicked off his shorts, leaving them beside the rest of his clothes.

Now he stood there in only his underwear.

For a brief second, Kate couldn't help glancing at him.

Her eyes moved quickly over his body before she looked away again.

Why was he so… hot?

And cute.

And—

Ugh.

Kate immediately splashed a little water with her hand and shook her head slightly.

She needed to stop thinking like that.

Now she was the one being the pervert.

"Ready or not," Ray shouted with a grin, "the shark's coming to the lake!"

Before she could react, he jumped into the water beside her, sending a splash across the dark surface of the lake.

Cold water rippled outward as he surfaced right next to her, pushing his wet hair back.

Kate let out a surprised gasp as the splash hit her shoulders.

"Ray!" she protested, half laughing as she wiped water from her face.

The small lake settled again around them, the moonlight reflecting across the surface while the sounds of the campfire remained distant through the trees.

For a moment it was just the two of them, standing in the cool water.

"So… no fucking, you said?" Ray asked with a teasing smile.

He took a slow step toward her through the water, the small ripples spreading around his legs.

Kate immediately narrowed her eyes at him, though the corner of her mouth twitched slightly like she was trying not to smile.

"Don't start," she warned.

The moonlight reflected softly across the lake while the quiet forest surrounded them.

Ray stopped a step away from her, still looking amused.

"Just making sure we're following the rules," he said.

He looked at her for a second, before adding.

"Whatever you say… pervert," Ray replied, pausing slightly before the last word just to push her buttons.

Kate's eyes widened.

"I'm not a pervert!" she shouted.

Before he could react, she lunged toward him through the water and bumped into him, hitting his shoulder lightly with both hands.

Water splashed around them as Ray stumbled half a step back, laughing.

"Hey!" he protested, still grinning.

The small lake rippled around them, while the quiet forest surrounded them as their little fight unfolded.

She pushed him again.

And again.

Each time splashing water up around them as she tried to shove him under the surface.

"Go down!" she insisted, laughing as she put more effort into it.

But Ray barely moved.

He stood there like a solid bridge in the middle of the lake, looking down at her with an amused expression while she kept trying to push him.

To him, it looked like a small, stubborn bear trying to win a fight.

Kate shoved him once more with both hands.

Ray didn't budge.

He just raised an eyebrow, clearly entertained by the effort she was putting in.

Then she suddenly stopped.

Kate stepped back through the water and crossed her arms, droplets sliding down her shoulders.

"You could at least pretend I can win," she said, a sad little smirk appearing on her face.

Ray looked at her for a moment, the amused expression still lingering.

The lake grew quiet again around them, the ripples slowly fading under the pale moonlight while the distant sounds of the campfire barely reached them through the trees.

Ray watched her standing there with her arms crossed, trying to look annoyed.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"You're cute… when you're angry," he said casually.

Kate froze.

For a moment she didn't move at all.

Her mind went completely blank, like someone had suddenly kicked open the doors of her mental kingdom and everything inside had stopped working.

Did he just—

Did he really just call her…

Cute?

Kate stood there in the water, completely stunned, while Ray looked at her like he had just made the most normal comment in the world.

And suddenly she had absolutely no idea what to say.
