Chapter 19 - Chapter XIX: Virgin Queen

Kate stood in the middle of the cabin, her arms tense at her sides as she stared at him.

Her eyes were narrowed, her face still red, and for a moment it genuinely looked like she was deciding whether to scream at him again… or actually strangle him.

Ray, on the other hand, looked completely relaxed.

He was sitting on the edge of his bed with his elbows resting casually on his knees, watching her like this was the most entertaining thing he had seen all day.

The faint light in the cabin made the situation feel strangely quiet after everything that had just happened.

And that only made the tension between them more obvious.

Kate suddenly stepped forward.

Before Ray could react, she lifted one foot and pushed it firmly against his chest, forcing him to lean back slightly on the bed.

Her balance was steady despite the bold move, her bare foot pressing into him while she leaned forward just enough to glare down at him.

"You will not call me stupid. I am not some blonde. You understand me?" she said sharply.

Ray could feel the pressure of her foot on his chest, but he still looked more amused than intimidated.

"If you enjoy stupid dolls, you should talk to Mia."

She huffed after saying it, clearly irritated.

Then she pulled her foot away from his chest and stepped back.

Kate turned and walked calmly toward her bed, trying to act like the moment hadn't affected her at all, even though the tension in her shoulders still gave her away.

Seeing Ray still grinning stupidly, she lost it.

Kate grabbed a glass from the small table and filled it with water. The moment the glass was full, she turned and walked straight toward him.

"Don't you dare!" Ray said, pointing a finger at her.

And that's when she threw the water straight into his face.

The splash hit him full on, droplets running down his hair and dripping from his chin.

Kate didn't rush afterward.

She simply turned around and walked away calmly, placing the empty glass back where she had taken it from.

Ray wasn't laughing anymore.

Now he just sat there, water dripping from his face.

And he was clearly pissed off.

As Ray was about to get up, clearly ready to get some kind of revenge—or at least say something—Kate calmly pulled out her phone.

She tapped the screen for a moment.

A second later, the small speaker sitting on the table in the corner of the room connected with a soft Bluetooth chime.

Ray pointed a finger at her, opening his mouth to speak.

But before he could say anything, music suddenly filled the cabin.

"I'm fucked up, I'm black and blue

I'm built for it, all the abuse

I got secrets

That nobody, nobody, nobody knows

I'm good on that pussy shit"

Ray tried to interrupt, lifting a hand as if he was about to say something over the music.

But the speaker was too loud.

Kate had already laid down on her bed, staring calmly at the ceiling while the song continued to fill the small cabin.

"My freakness is on the loose

And running all over you

Please take me to places

That nobody, nobody knows

You got me hooked up on the feeling

You got me hanging from the ceiling"

Ray stared at the ceiling for a moment, water still damp in his hair.

Then he dropped back onto his bed with a quiet thud, clearly deciding it was pointless to fight with her right now.

Kate didn't even look at him.

She just kept lying there while one song after another played from the speaker.

Ray listened for a while, half paying attention as the music filled the room.

After a few of her song choices, he started forming a theory.

Judging by the lyrics and the mood of the songs she was playing, she was probably into bad boys or something like that.

Ray lay there quietly for a moment, his head turned slightly toward her.

Kate was stretched out on her bed with her eyes closed, the soft light of the room falling across her face while the music kept playing in the background.

He watched her for a second longer than he probably should have.

"Fuck, she's hot," he muttered to himself quietly.

Ray stayed quiet for a moment, watching her.

Time to make her fun go away, though.

She's too cocky, and I won't let her be in control.

She wants to be treated rough… she'll get it.

He pushed himself up from the bed and walked over to the small table in the corner. Without hesitating, he reached down and switched the speaker off.

The music stopped instantly.

Kate's eyes opened at once.

"What are you doing?" she snapped, turning her head toward him. "It was a great song, stupid!"

"Shut up," he said simply as he walked back to his bed and lay down.

Kate pushed herself up slightly on her elbows, staring at him across the room.

Her eyes narrowed as she watched him.

The look on her face made it seem like he had just volunteered to become her next prey.

"You sure you wanna end up like Anakin on Mustafar?" she asked, looking straight at him.

Ray laughed but didn't answer.

"He was cocky as well… before getting cut in half, that is," she added, her tone now more playful.

"From your music choices, I'd say you want to end up like Padmé."

Ray said it casually from his bed, one arm behind his head as he looked over at her.

Kate frowned immediately.

"What? What do you mean?" she asked, pushing herself up slightly, clearly confused by the comment.

Ray turned his head toward her, a slow grin spreading across his face.

"Pregnant and alone," he said.

He started laughing quietly to himself, clearly pleased with the joke.

Kate's eyes narrowed as she stared at him across the room.

"If you got me pregnant," she said slowly, "I would chase after you all over the world just to hunt you down."

Her tone was calm, but the threat behind it was very real.

Ray kept staring at the ceiling, completely unfazed.

"I guess you're a small psycho after all," he said casually.

He didn't even bother turning his head toward her, like the comment had just slipped out without much thought.

Across the room, Kate's eyes narrowed again.

For a second she just stared at him, clearly deciding whether to yell at him… or throw something else.

But the corner of her mouth twitched slightly.

"Small?" she repeated slowly, clearly more offended by that word than the rest of the sentence.

For a moment, the cabin fell quiet again.

Ray shifted slightly on the bed, clearly deciding that continuing the argument would only make things worse.

"So… when are we gonna watch the next Star Wars movies?" he asked casually, as if trying to change the subject and calm things down a little.

Kate's eyes suddenly lit up.

She immediately rolled onto her side and pushed herself across the bed toward him, her earlier anger seemingly forgotten the moment Star Wars was mentioned again.

Leaning toward him with an excited grin, she looked straight at him.

"I'm your movie slut," she said with a smug little smirk. "You can use me for it anytime you want!"

Ray raised an eyebrow slightly, a faint grin forming on his face.

"Only for movies?" he said casually. "How sad."

Kate immediately rolled her eyes at him, though the corner of her mouth twitched like she was trying not to smile.

"You've seen more of me than any man," she said.

The moment the words left her mouth, Kate froze.

Her eyes widened in realization.

Then her entire face turned bright red.

She quickly buried her face into the pillow, pulling it over her head as if that could somehow erase what she had just said.

Ray turned his head toward her slowly.

"More, huh?" he asked, clearly amused.

But she didn't answer.

She just stayed there with her face hidden in the pillow.

Ray watched her for a moment.

So she's a virgin… that's cute.

Ray didn't even move.

He stayed lying on the bed, looking completely relaxed.

"Relax," he said casually. "You looked like a virgin anyway."

Kate's head shot up from the pillow.

Her face was still red, her hair slightly messy from burying it in the fabric.

"AND WHAT IF I AM?!" she suddenly screamed. "IT'S SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF?!"

Ray shrugged slightly, still lying comfortably on the bed.

"Not at all," he said calmly. "It just means I misjudged you by the looks."

Kate froze for a second after her outburst.

Then, almost immediately—

"Sorry," she muttered quickly, like she was trying to pretend the whole explosion had never happened.

Kate slowly sat down on her bed, looking like she didn't have the energy left to argue with him anymore.

The room grew quiet.

Ray noticed the change immediately.

Without saying anything else, he stood up and walked over to the light switch.

The cabin fell into darkness as he turned it off.

He returned to his bed and lay down again.

"Goodnight, Kate," he said quietly, this time without any teasing or edge in his voice.

Across the room, she shifted slightly under her blanket.

"Goodnight, Ray," she whispered back.

A few minutes later, the cabin was completely silent.

And before long, both of them had fallen asleep.
