The dirt path leading away from camp was alive with noise.
Dozens of campers walked between the tall pines, their voices blending together into a steady hum of conversation. The morning sun filtered through the branches above them, casting shifting patches of light across the narrow trail as the group slowly made its way toward the lake.
Some people walked in pairs, others in small groups, laughing and arguing about who would jump into the water first once they arrived. Somewhere farther up the trail, Jake was loudly explaining his "legendary swimming technique," which immediately triggered several sarcastic comments from the people around him.
Ray walked somewhere near the middle of the group.
Kate was beside him, though she had quickly gotten pulled into a conversation with Nia, who had introduced herself only a few minutes earlier. The two girls were walking slightly ahead now, talking casually as they followed the winding path deeper into the forest.
Ray didn't mind.
He kept a relaxed pace, hands loosely in his pockets as he watched the line of campers stretching out ahead of them.
Then someone stepped up beside him.
"Hey, Ray."
It was Mia.
She matched his pace easily, walking next to him as the rest of the group continued along the forest path.
Ray glanced at her as she stepped beside him.
"Hey," he replied.
Their eyes met for a second before both of them looked forward again, keeping pace with the group moving along the forest trail.
"You alright after yesterday?" Mia asked. "You drank a bit."
She laughed gently as she said it, brushing a hand through her hair before absentmindedly adjusting the strap of her tank top. The fabric was light and casual—comfortable for the walk—but just fitted enough to catch the sunlight filtering through the trees.
Ray let out a quiet breath through his nose.
"Yeah… I survived," he said. "Barely."
Ahead of them, Kate was still talking with Nia, the two of them walking a few steps in front as the group continued deeper along the path toward the lake.
"So what made you go onto this amazing vacation?"
She rolled her eyes playfully as she said it.
Ray looked at her for a moment, a small smirk forming on his face at the question.
"I think I want to find out if Bigfoot is real."
For a second Mia just stared at him.
Then she laughed, shaking her head as they continued walking along the trail with the rest of the group heading toward the lake.
As Mia continued walking beside Ray, she occasionally talked about small, random things—stories from home, little complaints about the heat, or jokes about the camp already feeling chaotic after just one day.
Ray mostly listened, answering now and then while keeping pace with the group as the trail wound deeper through the trees.
A few steps ahead, Kate was still walking with Nia.
But at one point she glanced over her shoulder.
Her eyes landed on Ray and Mia walking side by side.
She held the look for a second longer than necessary.
Something about it made her expression tighten just a little.
Then she turned her attention back to Nia, continuing the conversation—but the faint trace of annoyance lingered on her face as they walked.
The trees slowly began to thin as the group continued along the trail.
The sound reached them first.
Water.
A gentle, steady movement against rocks somewhere ahead.
Then the forest opened up.
The lake stretched out in front of them, wide and calm beneath the bright morning sky. Sunlight reflected across the surface of the water, creating shifting patterns of light that danced between the small ripples near the shore.
A narrow strip of sandy ground curved along the edge of the lake, surrounded by tall trees that leaned slightly over the water.
The line of campers slowly spread out as people stepped onto the shore, some already dropping their bags or stretching their arms after the walk.
Voices immediately grew louder.
A few people walked straight toward the water, crouching down to touch it, while others looked around the area like they were deciding the perfect spot to sit.
Behind Ray, Jake's voice cut through the air again as he loudly announced that this was the perfect stage for his "legendary dive."
The first real activity of camp had officially begun.
As the group spread out along the shore, Mia was still walking beside Ray when Kate stepped over toward them. Nia had already drifted back toward the cluster of girls she'd been talking with earlier, leaving Kate free to join them.
"Hey, I'm Kate."
She said it politely, offering Mia a small, friendly smile.
Inside her head, though, the thought came a little differently.
Bitch.
Kate held the smile anyway.
Mia returned it just as pleasantly.
"Hey, I'm Mia."
The two girls looked at each other for a moment, both smiling in that polite way people did when they were meeting for the first time—though neither of them seemed entirely fooled by the other's friendliness.
Around them the lake buzzed with activity as campers started dropping their bags, stepping toward the water, and claiming spots along the shore.
As the moment between Kate and Mia lingered a little too long, a familiar group approached from the side of the shore.
Sarah was the first to reach them.
"Hey guys!"
She hurried over and immediately wrapped Kate in a quick hug before the redhead could even react.
Kate blinked for a moment, then smiled as she returned the gesture briefly.
Behind her came Emma, Jake, and Marco.
"I'm sorry," Marco said calmly as he looked toward Ray with a small, amused smile. "Sarah is always very friendly."
Sarah stepped back from the hug, completely unbothered by the attention she had just drawn.
Around them, the lake continued to buzz with activity as campers spread out along the shore, some already testing the water with their feet while others searched for a good place to sit.
Emma tilted her head slightly toward the group sitting a little farther up the shore.
"Wanna sit with us? I think I need a break from Jake's swimming stories."
She said it with a small smirk.
Jake scratched the back of his head awkwardly, looking between them like he wasn't entirely sure if he had just been insulted or not.
Marco chuckled quietly under his breath while Sarah seemed completely unfazed, already scanning the beach like she was deciding the best place to sit.
Behind them, the lake shimmered under the sun while more campers began dropping their bags in the sand and moving toward the water.
Ray stepped up beside Jake, who still looked a little awkward after Emma's comment.
"Relax, girls will be girls."
Ray said it casually as he slipped an arm around Jake's neck and started guiding him toward the lake.
Jake laughed immediately, clearly not taking the teasing too seriously as the two of them headed down toward the water.
Behind them, the rest of the group followed more slowly along the sandy shore. Marco and Emma continued talking quietly while Sarah walked a little ahead, already looking excited to get closer to the lake.
Kate watched Ray and Jake for a second before rolling her eyes slightly.
Then she followed the group toward the water.
They settled down on a patch of sand not far from the water, close enough to hear the gentle waves brushing against the shore. A few scattered rocks and fallen branches marked the edge of the small beach, while the rest of the campers spread out along the lake in little groups.
Jake dropped his bag onto the sand the moment they sat down.
Without wasting time, he started digging through it.
A second later he pulled out several cold beers and began handing them around, starting with Ray before passing the rest to the others sitting nearby.
Ray didn't hesitate.
He lifted the bottle to his mouth and popped the cap off with his teeth.
Kate gasped.
"What are you doing, stupid?! Want to break your teeth?!"
She hurried over to him and gave him a quick slap on the back of the head.
The bottle cap dropped into the sand as Ray blinked in surprise, while the rest of the group watched the moment unfold with amused expressions.
Ray blinked after the light slap, then looked up at Kate with a playful expression.
Without saying anything, he slowly reached over and took the unopened beer from her hand.
Kate barely had time to react.
Ray held the bottle up between them, looking her straight in the eyes for a second.
Then he lifted it to his mouth and popped the cap off the exact same way.
The metal cap dropped into the sand beside them.
For a moment there was silence.
A couple of the others nearby started laughing, while Jake looked especially impressed by the repeat performance.
Kate just stared at him, clearly unsure whether she should be annoyed or impressed.
Kate opened her mouth, clearly ready to say something—her expression caught somewhere between annoyed and impressed.
But before she could get a word out—
"FUCK YEAH RAY, HOLIDAYS! WOOOOOH!"
Jake's voice exploded across the little spot they had claimed by the lake.
He threw his arm up dramatically and immediately started chugging his beer like he had just witnessed the greatest moment of the summer.
Several nearby campers turned their heads toward the sudden outburst.
Marco laughed quietly, while Emma shook her head with an amused smile.
Sarah clapped once like Jake had just given a motivational speech.
Kate slowly closed her mouth again, rolling her eyes as she looked back at Ray.
The moment she had been about to ruin with a lecture had completely vanished.
Kate looked at Ray for a moment, the corners of her mouth tightening slightly.
Then she lifted the beer bottle.
Without breaking eye contact, she tilted her head back and raised the bottle over her head, letting the drink pour down quickly as she chugged it in one smooth motion.
The whole thing lasted only a few seconds.
When she lowered the empty bottle again, a few drops of beer slid down the side of the glass and onto the sand.
Jake let out another loud cheer somewhere beside them.
Ray blinked, clearly not expecting that response, while the others around them laughed at the sudden display.
Kate wiped the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand, still looking straight at him like she had just proven a point.
Ray watched her finish the beer, the empty bottle still in her hand as she stared at him like she had just won something.
For a brief moment he said nothing.
There was no way she was going to outdrink him. Not in a million years.
Ray grabbed his own bottle and lifted it.
Without looking away from her, he tilted it back and chugged the entire thing in one go, the beer disappearing almost as quickly as hers had.
The bottle lowered.
For a second there was silence.
Then Ray let out a loud, aggressive burp.
Jake nearly fell backward laughing.
Marco covered his mouth, trying unsuccessfully to hide his amusement, while Emma just shook her head in disbelief.
Kate stood there staring at him, clearly not expecting the moment to end quite like that.
She huffed softly and turned away from him, clearly unimpressed with the finale of his little victory.
Kate walked over toward Emma and sat down beside her in the sand, crossing her arms slightly as she tried to look like she wasn't annoyed at all.
Ray, on the other hand, looked more satisfied than ever.
He stepped over to Jake, who was still laughing, and grabbed another beer from the bag.
Jake handed it over gladly, the two of them already starting to laugh again as they cracked the bottles open.
Around them people began to settle, a few campers already testing the water, and others setting their bags down along the shore.
Ray took a drink and looked out across the bright surface of the lake, the sunlight dancing across the ripples.
He couldn't shake the feeling growing in his chest.
This was going to be the best summer ever.
