I scooted over to the main house in order to gather the ingredients we would need to make cookies.
It seemed like a weird idea, but baking always brought us together. Mostly, it was Lori and I who made the cookies, and Martin who would sneak in and steal licks of the dough.
Those were the good memories of growing up, but it saddened me there were so many bad ones as well. Lori and I had always looked up to Martin, never realizing that he was struggling with our father's overbearing nature too.
I remembered what Freddy and Edward had told me about how our father had threatened to send them to an orphanage. He always made his love so conditional - dependent on whether we did what he wanted to or not - and Martin rarely did what our father asked. I just hadn't considered how much it had affected Martin.
