Freezing in River City

It was freezing in River City. I mean, I'd never dealt with rain like it before. I stood outside this fancy restaurant with a little gift box clutched in my hands. They were shaking something awful, like I was going to freeze solid. It was our three-year anniversary, so I'd splurged on this silly silver ring. I whispered "Sarah, I'm here" as she opened the door.

This girl, my girl, stepped out. But it wasn't just her – she was leaning on some smug dude in a suit, Jason. "Ethan, it's over," she spat, looking at me like I was the scum of the earth. Then she said, "You can't even afford a meal here," and I felt like I'd been punched. I mean, Jason had just taken her out and gotten her this ridiculous bag. It was worth way more than my rent. "Just stop," she said, "and leave me alone." She called me a loser, and Jason came over, sneering at me. "What a joke, you'll never be anything," he laughed.

He kicked a puddle, splashing water all over my already cruddy shoes. Then he drove off in a screaming sports car, leaving me standing there in the rain. That ring I'd gotten her was just sitting there in the mud, and I felt like I'd lost everything. My eyes started to sting, and I reached for my phone in my pocket. My fingers brushed against this thin card with a weird energy to it.

Just as I was reeling, my phone buzzed. And on the screen was a message that completely flipped everything around. "Young Master Ethan, your grandfather's test is over. Your thing is lifted. Your granddad's sent $100 million as a gift." I couldn't even breathe. The Black Gold card in my pocket? That was supposed to be some super-exclusive card. And it was activated now. My phone showed my bank account balance – $100,000,000.00.

Now the rain didn't feel so bad. In fact, it felt kind of nice for the first time in weeks. A spark lit up in my eyes as I watched Jason's car speeding away. I muttered something, but I'm pretty sure it was just to myself – "The trash is getting taken care of."
