Chapter 2 - Episode 2: The Price of One Life

The world did not stop.

That was the cruelest truth.

The fire still burned, devouring what remained of the street. Flames danced wildly across broken wood and twisted metal, as if nothing sacred had been lost. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second. People ran. Some cried. Some screamed. Others simply stood frozen, unable to process what had just happened.

Life continued.

Unbothered.

Unaware.

But for Akira Noctis—

Everything had ended.

"…Mom…"

His voice barely existed.

A broken whisper lost in the chaos.

He held her body tightly, as if letting go would erase her completely.

Her warmth was fading.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Moments ago, she had been alive.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Protecting him.

Now—

She was silent.

Still.

Gone.

"…Wake up…"

His fingers tightened around her clothes, gripping desperately.

As if he could pull her back into existence.

"Please… wake up…"

Nothing.

Her face remained peaceful.

Too peaceful.

As if she had simply fallen asleep.

But Akira knew.

"…No…"

His chest tightened.

His breathing became uneven.

"I didn't mean it…"

His voice cracked.

Tears blurred his vision.

"I just… wanted to live…"

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound returned.

Louder now.

Sharper.

It wasn't outside.

It was inside him.

Akira's body stiffened.

His hands trembled.

"Make it stop…"

The ticking didn't stop.

Instead—

It changed.

Something appeared in his vision.

Faint.

Flickering.

Like a broken signal trying to stabilize.

Numbers.

00:59:42

Akira froze.

"…What… is that…?"

The numbers glitched.

Distorted.

Then stabilized again.

00:59:41

"…A timer…?"

His breath became shallow.

"No… this doesn't make sense…"

His instincts screamed.

Something was deeply wrong.

Suddenly—

A voice.

"Debt must be repaid."

Akira's entire body went cold.

His eyes widened.

"…You…"

That voice.

The same one from before.

"Give her back…!"

His voice broke as he shouted.

"Give her back right now!!"

Silence.

The world didn't respond.

But the voice did.

"Equivalent exchange has been completed."

Akira's mind froze.

"…Exchange…?"

His thoughts began connecting something terrifying.

"…No…"

He tightened his grip around his mother.

"…No… NO!!"

"One life preserved."

The timer continued—

00:58:53

"Multiple lives compensated."

Akira's entire world collapsed again.

"YOU'RE LYING!!"

His scream tore through the air.

"I DIDN'T ASK FOR THAT!!"

His voice shook violently.

"I DIDN'T ASK FOR ANYONE TO DIE!!"

Silence.

Then—

"Balance does not require permission."

Akira felt something inside him break.

"…Then take me instead…"

His voice dropped.

Weak.

Shattered.

"…Take my life… and give hers back…"

The air grew heavy.

For a moment—

Nothing answered.

Hope.

A tiny, fragile hope—

Then—

"Request denied."

Akira's breath stopped.

"…Why…?"

"Your existence now carries recorded debt."

The timer flickered again.

00:57:21

"Debt cannot be reversed."

His vision blurred completely.

"…Then what is this…?"

His voice trembled.

"This timer… what does it mean…?"

A long silence followed.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Then—

"Remaining balance window."

"…Balance… window…?"

Akira couldn't understand.

But deep inside—

He felt it.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Suddenly—

A scream cut through everything.

"HELP!! SOMEBODY HELP!!"

Akira turned.

A man was trapped beneath collapsed debris.

Blood covered his body.

His breathing was unstable.

Desperate.

"Please… I don't want to die…"

Akira froze.

Those words.

The same words he had said.

"I… don't want to die…"

His chest tightened painfully.

The timer—

00:56:48

The ticking grew louder.

Almost unbearable.

Then—

"Balance opportunity detected."

Akira's eyes widened.

"…What…?"

"You may transfer survival."

"…Transfer…?"

"Your preserved existence can be reassigned."

Akira looked at the man.

Then slowly—

At his mother.

Then at the timer.

"…If I save him…"

His voice trembled.

"…what happens to me…?"

Silence.

Then—

"Debt will be reduced."

"…And me…?"

A pause.

"Your existence probability will decrease."

Akira's breathing became unstable.

"…So I'll die…?"

"Eventually."

The answer was calm.

Absolute.

No hesitation.

Silence crushed him.

Akira looked at his mother again.

Her lifeless face.

Her peaceful expression.

"…If I had chosen differently…"

Tears fell uncontrollably.

"…you would still be alive…"

The man screamed again.

"PLEASE!!"

Akira clenched his fists.

His heart raced uncontrollably.

The timer dropped—

00:55:02

The ticking became unbearable.

"…I…"

His voice shook.

"I don't know what to do…"

For the first time—

Akira understood something terrifying.

There was no right choice.

Only consequences.

He slowly stood up.

His legs trembled.

His body felt heavy.

His eyes filled with fear.

Guilt.

Pain.

He walked toward the man.

Each step felt like it was tearing him apart.

"…I'm sorry…"

The man looked at him.

Hope filled his eyes.

"You'll help me… right…?"

Akira froze.

Hope.

That same hope…

His mother had.

"…I…"

The timer—

00:53:37

The voice whispered—

"Decide."

Akira closed his eyes.

His mind screamed.

His heart shattered.

"…I don't want anyone else to die…"

His hand slowly reached forward.

The moment he touched the man—

💀 FLASH

Darkness consumed everything.

The world twisted violently.

Reality screamed.

Akira felt something leave his body.

Something vital.

Something irreplaceable.

Then—

Silence.

The man gasped suddenly.

"…I… I'm alive…?"

His breathing stabilized.

His wounds slowed.

Akira stumbled backward.

His body felt weaker.

Lighter.

Unstable.

"…What… did I just do…?"

The timer flickered violently—

00:11:52

"…WHAT?!"

His eyes widened in horror.

"It dropped… that much…?"

The voice returned—

"Debt partially repaid."

Akira collapsed to his knees.

"…This… is insane…"

His hands shook uncontrollably.

"…I can't keep doing this…"

Then—

A realization struck him.

"…If I don't…"

He looked around.

At the burning city.

At the people crying.

At the chaos.

"…more people will die…"

The ticking continued.

Louder.

Closer.

Like a constant reminder.

There was no escape.

Only choices.

And consequences.

Far beyond reality—

NULL watched.

"Subject has begun adaptation."

Its presence deepened.

"Observation will continue."

Back on Earth—

Akira slowly stood up again.

His legs still shook.

His heart still ached.

But something had changed.

His eyes.

They were no longer just filled with pain.

Now—

They carried resolve.

"…If my life is the price…"

He clenched his fists.

"…then I'll decide how it's spent."

The ticking continued.

But now—

It no longer sounded like fear.

It sounded like…

A beginning.
