Chapter 16 - episode 16

Episode 16: The Dinner

Ju‑hyuk's apartment was minimalist—white walls, clean lines, furniture that looked like it had been selected by an interior designer who had never met a comfortable couch. But there were signs of him everywhere: stacks of books on the coffee table, a half‑finished puzzle on the dining table, a pair of running shoes by the door that didn't match the aesthetic.

"You live here," Seo‑ah said, surprised.

"I try to." He was in the kitchen, wearing an apron that said "Kiss the Cook" in English. "What did you expect?"

"I don't know. A spreadsheet on the wall."

He laughed. "That's in my office."

The dinner was simple—grilled fish, rice, soup, a salad she suspected he had bought pre‑made. It was the most domestic thing she had ever done with him, and it made her chest ache in a way she didn't expect.

After dinner, they sat on the balcony, looking at the city.

"I have something to tell you," she said.

He turned to her. "What?"

"The counter. It changed again." She pointed to the corner of her vision, even though he couldn't see it. "It says LIVE now. Not OBSERVING. Not RECORDING. LIVE."

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know." She leaned her head against his shoulder. "But it feels different. Like they're not waiting for me to perform anymore. Like they're just… there."

He wrapped an arm around her. "Maybe that's the point. Maybe they're not producers anymore. Maybe they're just witnesses."

She thought about that. The celestial audience had started as judges, then become consumers, then observers. Now they were just… there. Present. Without expectation.

"I used to think I had to be interesting to matter," she said. "That's what the ratings taught me. That my life was only worth something if people were watching."

"And now?"

"Now I don't care if anyone's watching." She looked up at the stars—real stars, she hoped. "I just want to live."

He kissed the top of her head. "Then live."
