Chapter 20 - episode 20

Episode 20: The Final Scene

On the first anniversary of the counter's disappearance, Seo‑ah did something she had never done before: she threw a party.

It was a small gathering—her sister, a few friends from work, the producer Kang Dae‑won, and the friends she had made during her bucket‑list experiments, the strangers who had become something more. They filled her apartment, drinking wine, eating too much food, laughing at stories she told about her time as a contract worker.

Ju‑hyuk stood by the window, watching her move through the crowd. When their eyes met, he smiled—that real smile, the one he kept just for her.

Later, after everyone had gone home, they stood on the balcony together, the city quiet below them.

"Do you miss it?" he asked. "The counter?"

She considered the question. "Sometimes. It was nice knowing someone was watching."

"But?"

"But I don't need it anymore." She leaned against the railing. "I spent my whole life waiting for someone to tell me I was doing okay. My boss, my boyfriend, the producers. And then I realized that I was the only one who needed to be okay with it."

He wrapped his arm around her waist. "And are you? Okay with it?"

She looked out at the city—the lights, the river, the millions of lives being lived in the buildings around her. Somewhere out there, there was probably another Yoon Seo‑ah, another person with a 0.4% rating, another life waiting to be lived.

She hoped that person found their voice. She hoped they poured coffee on their laptop and danced in public and told the universe they weren't going to be invisible anymore.

"I'm more than okay," she said. "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."

Ju‑hyuk kissed her, soft and sure.

And somewhere in the celestial realm, a silver‑haired producer turned off the last camera and smiled.

"Now that," she said to the empty soundstage, "was a finale."
