Chapter 12 - episode 12

Episode 12: The Interview

Ju‑hyuk arranged for her to be interviewed by a journalist from the Hankyoreh, a newspaper known for its investigative reporting. The interview was scheduled for a Thursday, at a café in Jongno, neutral ground.

Seo‑ah arrived early, wearing a simple blouse and the silver star necklace Ju‑hyuk had given her. The journalist, a woman named Choi Eun‑young, was already there, her notebook open.

"Ms. Yoon," she said, shaking hands. "Thank you for agreeing to speak with me."

"Thank you for being interested."

The interview started with the welfare program—Seo‑ah's proposals, the resistance she'd faced, the cost‑benefit analysis that had finally forced the interim CEO to listen. But Choi Eun‑young was more interested in the context.

"You worked under Director Cha for ten years," she said. "What was that like?"

Seo‑ah paused. She had rehearsed this answer, but now that the moment was here, she found she didn't want to be careful.

"It was like being invisible," she said. "I did the work of three people, took the blame for his mistakes, and watched him take credit for everything I accomplished. And I let him. Because I was too afraid to speak up."

"What changed?"

She touched the star at her throat. "I realized that being afraid was killing me. Not metaphorically. Actually killing me. And I decided I'd rather die fighting than die quietly."

Choi Eun‑young's pen moved faster. "Do you think Director Cha will be caught?"

"I hope so. But even if he isn't, I'm not going to let him control my life anymore. I'm not going to hide. I'm not going to be silent. I'm going to do my job, help my sister, and build something that outlasts whatever he tries to do."

The journalist looked up. "That's very brave."

"It's not bravery," Seo‑ah said. "It's just not wanting to be 0.4% anymore."
